This is ridiculous. Only reason I got this update was to support my apple TV with mirroring. And now come to find out, burried on some sub-website, this feature is only for 2011 and later Macs. I would like my money back and this rubish removed from my computer!
Just wait, like always someone will make a hacked version or editing one of the .plist files to get it supported, people always do!
Just look, Siri an iPhone 4S("Hardware") only feature; Runs on Jailbroken iPhones back to the 3GS and iPods right back to the 3rd Gen.
Unlike Phones apple can't limit what we do on our computers, Il look into it in the morning and see if any compatability files can be fiddled with.
As "Loyal" as i am to apple even i thingk this is a joke.
Luckily the iAtkos team will get ML running on macs older than 2008(Just like they did with Lion and CoreDuo Macs) so that's not an issue as for airplay, Someone will figure it out as it's obviously not a "hardware" only feature Like Siri
As i said i own a non-compatable airplay Mac and a compatable one, i will look into the files in the morning and check for differences etc. who knows it might be as easy as copy and pasting something in terminal or editing a plist file-This is what apple do, and this is what we do; We fix the greedy companies mistake!
Is the Core i5/i7 (supports Airplay) statement correct? I have an i5 and it is not available under the display settings.
Only 2011 Macs and onward get those features.
I have a late 2010 MBA 13. I also stayed away from Mac OSX Lion after doing lots of research throughout the internet and here on the forums. I am thrilled with the OSX Snow Leopard that came installed on my machine and wanted to be sure that I would be happier with another operating system before I took the plunge.
I'm excited with what I'm reading so far about Mountain Lion. Then I read about AirPlay Mirroring not being supported on my machine:

I'm not thrilled, but this may well be another example of "If you wannt play, you'll have to pay" from Apple requiring us to keep buying newer and newer machines when the near new ones we have are so great and we are so happy with them.
Ugh...
Newer technology requires newer hardware....it's just the nature of the beast, not some evil ploy by Apple to drive away loyal customers by gouging them whenever possible....
And the good news is, you don't have to buy a new Mac - just get an iPad 2 and you will be all set!

I'm happy to upgrade, but really the Apple spec is dubious at best. First the footnote is in a light grey, just visible text when compared to the "AirPlay Mirroring" hyped up header. Then the use of "mid 2011, or early 2011" statements are way to vague. Apple sells a LOT of Macs, there must be a million people who purchased in that transition of "Mid to Early", surely they could have done a much better job of getting this message out and been more specific of what systems are actually supported.
First time I've been burned by Apple in 10+ years with 5 Macs, 3 iPads, 6 iPods, 2 Apple TV's, and a lot of OSX upgrades.

I hear what you are saying about it not being really up front and obvious. But I work in the technology business, and I guess I am just a little less dubious about intentions when it comes to upgrades, new features, etc. and their compability with existing hardware. Also more cautious about assuming that every new feature that comes along is going to be compatible with a machine that is a previous model (regardless if that was 2 years ago or 6 months ago). If there is a newer hardware model, then I'm not going to assume that new features will be compatible with the model I have.
I also am less critical of aspects of a particular system that are not as good as I'd like them to be - like Safari, for example. I rate Safari as a browser on the same level as I do Explorer - they both pretty much suck as far as I'm concerned. But Apple and Microsoft are not in the browser business - it's just an app they offer, but it is not their only game. I prefer to use browsers from companies who make their living making browsers.
So, it just gets a little grating sometimes when people get all up in arms and start accusing people of intentionally trying to make their lives miserable and of acting with malice aforethought concerning the hit to their pocketbooks. It's a fast-paced business, and sometimes we have to eat a little dust....

Anyone else think its funny how apple claim the 2007 Mac Pro with its 8 core 3Ghz CPU and 16+GB of ram and its 6950 Isn't powerful enough to airplay? It's completely ********- it's nearly a £4000 machine! Even more powerful than the newest iMac 27"!
Yet apple considers it not powerful enough! The Hardware excuse is complete bullcrap! The Mac pro goes up to 4000+ pixels with the 6950 and yet it doesnt support 1900x1080 over a network? ********

We are pretty close, I am in Swanville, over near Belfast.
For me the Airplay thing was an ok work around to no flash on the iPads. My kids are home schooled, and there are certain applications that they use which are built around flash, so it would have been nice to leave the Macs where they were, and mirror to the large screen.... oh well, I just set up a hardwired connection from one of the notebooks, at least it will keep the Airplay traffic off of my network.
I'm in tech too, and engineering manager for a networking company. In my opinion, Apple needs to get a bit more detailed up front with their specs. I had a mirrored drive dual G4 way back when, and was always doing the double take on differentiating upgrades and support. But Apple is Apple, and no one integrates hardware/software as good as them, so I think I'll be stuck with whatever they want to do, as long as I want that tight integration.

I've heard of AirParrot as a work around for not having AirPlay. I returned a Boxee, Roku, and Apple TV b/c I just wanted to stream. I remember searching forever to find something that would work and I guess AirParrot didn't exist at the time. My wife has an older Mac so I'll probably install that on hers to get it to work with the new ATV I plan on buying.
Try Airparrot, if you've got the system and really need the Airplay functionality for $9.99 it seems to work. I just did a trial on it. There was some frame slips/jitter in my network, but overall the functionality was OK for me.

AirParrot and AirServer might do the job for most.
There's trials, so go try it out everyone since this is the best you can get for now.
I now it ***** you can't use AirPlay natively, but there might be a cheap option around it.
