Mid 2010 MacBook Pro kernel panics

Macbook Pro, 15" medio 2010, 2.66 Ghz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1067 DDR with OSX 10.8 (same problems with 10.7.4) crashes after installing latest updates and stils crashes after installing 10.8. There are no memory problems, but reinstalling origanal memory (4MB). Don't help.

Clean install did not help also. It looks like 10.8 does not the trick, because the system crash even more.

I dont know if there any updates or is it a typical Apple Mainboard problem?

Hi,

It looks like the same issue. They must run two diagnostics an most of the time it will surface.

Was top! (IAM store is ook in Amsterdam)

for other to reader, i repeat this statement:

TS4088 Extended warranty // TS4088

Hello everybody,

I had the same issue, been following the tread for a while now.

To make a long story short ( if someone is interested, can check there's a whole thread I opened a few months ago )

I am currently visiting in the US.

I took my macbook to the Genius Bar and described the issue.

They were aware that there's an issue with Macbook Pro mid 2010 and ran some tests.

The tests failed and they decided to replace the logicboard, free of charge.

Since then, no issues at all.

Best of luck to all

@Grant Bennet-Alder

Thanks 😉

@Ruud van Asperen

Thanks to you as well!

So I went there a couple of weeks ago, left my MBP there and they couldn't find anything. The guy I spoke to knew about the problems the mid 2010 model has. They ran all the tests Apple provides, multiple times, but nothing was diagnosed. Not with my custom 8GB RAM, not with standard issue 4GB "Apple" RAM. So now I'm off to finding my old RAM and see if that works. Although I know that the crashes started with the "Apple" RAM, because I only upgraded to 8GB because of those crashes. I guess I'm just going to have to use it until it breaks down or explodes, because it's out of guarantee period now. 2k well wasted.

See last post of page 3. I'll post more recent ones too. They said it was turned on for 7 days and didn't crash. After I had my MBP back, I put iMovie and iPhoto on it and surely enough it crashed within the day. So now it's sure that it's a hardware problem, I just put back my entire Time Machine back-up. I'm getting really tired of this. 76 kernel panic reports since March 16. Here's March 16 and 10 minutes ago.

That certainly looks like the TS4088-related crashes. Most users with that problem said that as long as the Genius knew to run the special diagnostic, the problem was detected immediately.

Running the "regular" diagnostic does NOT tend to find the problem.

"leave it running and hope it crashes" does NOT tend to find the problem.

That is why I have revised my advice to say, "Do not leave until they have run the special diagnostic."

Mar 27, 2013 7:11 AM in response to Grant Bennet-Alder

I didn't really get the chance to show him this topic as he seemed to know all about it.

I asked for an official receipt with the results of the test. He was kind enough to pardon the reseach costs.

Reparation: observed no issues with this MBP

VST test = pass

AST test = pass

HDD scan / SMART test = pass

Advice: replace original Apple memory

*Happy the Apple discussion board saves drafts. MBP crashed twice on this form lol.

I'm going to the Apple Store tomorrow. Opening this page prior to talking to them so I can show it. Thanks 🙂

Mar 28, 2013 12:41 PM in response to Ruud van Asperen

I'll update when I get it back!

Apparently my battery isn't in great shape either after 1200 charge cycles 😝 In the Store it said 65% battery health, but I'm sure a calibration will do some good to the 'replace' advice. Any clue at what % the battery will stop working? 50%? A new battery costs €130 so I'm going to stretch it until the last moment.
