Mid 2010 MacBook Pro kernel panics

Macbook Pro, 15" medio 2010, 2.66 Ghz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1067 DDR with OSX 10.8 (same problems with 10.7.4) crashes after installing latest updates and stils crashes after installing 10.8. There are no memory problems, but reinstalling origanal memory (4MB). Don't help.

Clean install did not help also. It looks like 10.8 does not the trick, because the system crash even more.

I dont know if there any updates or is it a typical Apple Mainboard problem?

Feb 8, 2014 4:02 AM in response to Oberdan

We have the same situation Oberdan. I am extremely frustrated because I spent an hour talking to someone on Applecare chat, and they wouldn't even admidt to the "unfairness" of the problem. WHat frustrates me the most is that they didn't send me an email, or any sort of notification that I had one of these defective computers. They send me advertisments and other pointless information, but they can't put the tiny amount of effort in to notify me of the problem that I bought a defective computer for 2000$.

I have read reports that some people have gotten their computers fixed (graphics card/motherboard replacement) even though they had also passed the 3 year cut off date.

I am in Vietnam, there is no official Apple Store, but there is a service centre. And they are quite nice, they daid they will fix it for me if I can get someone from the store I bought it at to write somethign on my file.

Like an "ok, fix this guys computer".

But of course, the apple store where I bought my MBP has no way of contacting them through email. And a phone call is goign to get you someone on the floor who dosent know much.

Fruuuuusrtrating!

The prices in Vietnam are simialr to Brazil, so I feel your pain.

Feb 10, 2014 4:17 AM in response to aleos

Hi Aleos, yes is so frustrating... last week I went to the service center and I asked them if they had seen someone getting a new logic board after the 3 years, and them said that they had never seen that. So I realy don't know what I'm going to do, I'm very disapointed and I don't wanna spend more money with this computer, because I have read some guys saying that the video problem can occurs even in the new logic board.

For now, I'm trying an old version of gfxcardstatus that I managed to set the Integrated card as the current video card, and I was able to work for one day, but WITHOUT my external monitor.

I'm thinking in call the Apple support again, but I'm really bored to do that.

If you wanna try the gfxcardstatus, tell me and I can send it to you.

Feb 24, 2014 4:51 AM in response to Ruud van Asperen

Same problems here.

I have a Macbook Pro Mid 2010, i7 with 2,66Ghz and a HiRes Screen.

Last year (October) I heard about the common problem and the extended guarantee because of faulty graphic cards etc. My Macbook had been funny until that date with crashes, etc. Not too many so I wasn't aware that this was a real big problem until I heard about it.

My Apple dealer and repair center ordered a new motherboard, put it into the Macbook and while still in repair, the same errors occured. Black screen, starting up again, etc.

They ordered a second motherboard which then was ok. For like 3 months.

Then the same errors occured but I was already over the 3 months guarantee (Hallo Apple, seriously???) for the new motherboard.

Of course I freaked out and thank God they were cool enough to replace it again.

The Macbook came back today and within 10 minutes I got another kernel panic, another one 30 minutes after (while not even on the Macbook!).

I really don't think this is cool as I spent 2200 Euro on this Macbook 3 years and 1 month ago (2 months too early as the new models arrived soon after - oh well - I needed a new Macbook).

I think the motherboards are all broken or can't handle certain tasks (I am not an expert, therefore I can't really say more - excuse me for that). Apple should stand up for it and replace it with a newer model. I don't even want the latest Macbook Pro with Retina, I couldn't care less, I just want a functioning computer worth the money I spent for in the first place.

It even looks like my repair center has no more ideas what to do with my Macbook, so I kind of gave up on it.

But I don't have 2500 Euro to spend on a new one either. Which makes me think that I might not get a Macbook Pro ever again..if Apple themselves doesn't come up with a fair idea...

Here is the log in case you guys wanna look over it and have some ideas what could possibly the fault.

At the time of the kernel panic, I was not on my computer, I was installing a few programs (Logic, iPhoto), had Safari, Messages, Mail, iTunes and Notes open.

This was after a clean install of Mavericks on a new 1TB SSD that I bought after the new motherboard was put it, also done by the Apple repair center...

There is a definitive test for the Latent Defect which was built into certain MacBook Pro 6,2 units.

It is called the VST Test, and it takes only a few minutes for your Apple Authorized Service Provider to run. The result of this test is a huge banner on the screen that says "PASSED" or "FAILED".

If you have been given a replacement part with the Latent Defect, it will show "FAILED" and should be replaced again.

--------

There are other failures that can occur. These sometimes occur from the computer getting much too hot or just random Hardware failures. These are NOT detected by the VST Test. These failures would NOT be covered by the recall progam.

Thanks Oberdan. I got the gfx status app, and actually it has helped me so much. I am in music production, so my graphics performance isnt on the high priority list, and with gfxstatus I just keep it on intergrated all the time. I've had no panics since I dl'd it. It realy saved me.

I recomend everyone who is experienceing these problems, and for one reson or another, can't get your MBP serviced, use the gfx status app. It will allow you to work again.

Of course this says nothing about the iresponsible behaviour of Apple.

I'm happy I could help. But lets continue trying to get a new logic board from Apple, I'll try this soon, when the new Apple's physical store will be available in Rio de Janeiro, Brasil.

Best regards,

Does anyone know what type of kernel panic this could be? It happens at least once a day, sometimes 4 times a day. I have taken my laptop in to be serviced, but they cannot find anything wrong with it. Today I noticed that sometimes it even happens when I open my Gmail. I am pretty sure that it only happens when I am on the internet, not when I am using other applications.

Thanks!

This is exactly the MacBook Pro referenced by dozens of owners on this thread.

You need to go back to the Genius Bar or Apple Authorized Service Provider and politely insist that the run the VST test (not the overnight test). It is brief enough for them to run while you wait. They should refere to the procedures related to this article:

TS4088- MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010): Intermittent black screen or loss of video

The VST test ends in a spectacular PASSED or FAILED screen. If failed, the free repair program has probably expired, but if you had complaints before your warranty expired, you may be able to bargain with the Store manager for cheaper options than a US$800 motherboard replacement.

Please post your results back here. Users may be able to make additional suggestions.

can someone help me please same problem with kernel

Oct 16, 2014 4:57 AM in response to Ruud van Asperen

I have the same problem, my Macbook Pro mid 2010 restarts unexpectly, and the error is a Gpu Panic, so i went to an Apple Care Center and they did an hardware test. The VST test failed. So i have to replace the Gpu by paying 670 euro + tax (in Italy it's 814 euro). I'm so angry, because i did'n know the Apple call with with 2010 Macbooks, and because they didn't publish this in the official Apple site. What can i do? I have Mavericks now, and they said to me i can reinstall Snow Leopard OS to have a chance, but i know for sure a lot of programs can't run under this, or i can search this component and replace it by myself, or i have to search another laboratory who can made this replacement. Suggestions?

I had no issues at all until upgrading to Mountain Lion and that's when the the GPU suddenly and frequently rebooted. I used the gfxCardStatus app and keep the external monitor disconnected but this *****. I was assigned this laptop from HQ and will eventually get a new one but for those who spent a couple grand go to change.org and force Apple to fix the issue.

Hi. I've got a macbook pro mid 2010, affected by this issue. After a long search, i thin i found a workaround to avoid pay a lot of money for an old laptop repair (no warranty).

This issue is avoid the mac to use the nvidia chip, yes i know, you lost this funcionallity, but u get one stable equipment.

As super user (sudo su -) go to /System/Library/Extensions

Move the files/directories named NV*.kext and GeForce*.kext to a new backup directory.

Reboot the system.

in my case me laptop doesn't reboot or GPU panic for 5 days.

I hope this help others.

Good luck frm Spain.
