Exchange under Mountain Lion

I have major problems using Exchange in Mountain Lion. Under Lion everything worked fine (Mail, Calendar, Contacts incl. global address list). Under ML only Calendar works, Mail and Contacts show connection errors. Our corporate server is Exchange 2007.

Has somebody a fully working Exchange in ML?

Any ideas?

Many thanks!

Hi everybody,

until now (since 3 restarts) it works fine, but I found some strange behaviour:

1. In Mail in the account settings, I have to CHECK "Use autodiscover" checkbox (in German it's "Automatische Serverkennung verwenden" - I don't know the english translation), and only then I can set a custom value for the internal server. If I UNCHECK "Use autodiscover", it DOES use autodiscover and the textfield for the custom value is disabled. Normaly it should be the other way round!

2. After the first restart of my Mac, the Calendar and Contacts were broken again (Mail worked though). I had to go to the system settings and open "Mail, Contacts & Calendar", there I had to chose the Exchange account and go to "Details ...". Then I had to re-enter my password for the Exchange account. After this, Calender and Contacts worked again (since 2 restarts).

I hope this was it ... maybe it will help somebody else.

Kind regards from Austria,

Mike

To All,

Well I ran with the 10.8.1 patch and everything was fine for a little while. Then I started getting the beach ball when I went into my Calendar. I would have to force quit to get it to stop. I deleted my account and re-added it and now I get my folders and no mail. I am still getting the bech ball when I open the calendar.

I deleted my Exchange account from the system settings and returned to Otlook 2011 and everything is working again. It did almost work so hopefully Apple will continue working on this problem. I don't understand why they can't get Apple Mail on the Mac to just work like Apple Mail on the iPad/iPhone. Hopefully they don't fix Apple Mail on the iPhone and iPad with the new IOS 6 the same way they fixed Apple Mail in Mountain Likon.

It seems that entering the external server name in the internal server fields in Mail, Calendar and Contacts is the solution so far. Autodiscover is checking itself back on but leaving the internal server unchanged so by entering the external server name here it's been working after several reboots and connecting internally and externally. Calendar also does not hang when opening and going into preferences.

We are able to resolve the external exchange server name internally so for now this seems like the solution until next update.

Just curious, does anyone know what the "Correct" server side settings are for Exchange to make this work. There have been a few posts in this thread that have intimated that the problem isn't MLs handling of auto discovery but rather that the exchange settings might not be correct. I'm not knowledgable enough to know the difference but our corporate IT team is very receptive to user feedback so I would like to pass on the optimal settings (if there is such a thing). Thanks for the help.

Since 10.8.1 my mail and calendars have been working much better, so I am functional now. That is a very good thing.

I use an external hosted exchange account, provided through GoDaddy actually.

If I use the "Autodiscover" service it will work great for a while, but then as soon as the external host pings back something other than the original internal server things go bonkers. By un-checking the Autodiscover service I'm able to keep this switch from happening, but it tells me that there are still some bugs in the system.

It seems to me that there might be an indexing problem of some sort? When I manually put the original internal server name back in all my emails automaticlaly populate, so they are still housed in my library. When the internal server changes then it seems that the connection to that library is misdirected or lost.

Some here have noted that the Autodiscover service will reactive after a re-boot. I suggest to take note of the initial internal server setting. If that happens, uncheck and put that name back in. Change mailboxes and come back and see what happens. It might bring all of your emails back without reconfiguring the whole thing.

Thank you but, if I read them correctly, these are instructions for conifuring the mail client (which I think I've done correctly). I was looking for instructions on setting up the server side for my corporate IT folks. I continue to have intermittent issues with Mail and Calendar (i.e. if I reschedule a meeting on my iphone it will not move on Calendar but it will move on Outlook)

On the Exchange server side, they need to look at the autodiscover settings. This issue happens when you have a split domain - when you are the office, you use mail.domain.local and when you are outside you use mail.domain.com. It works best when you can set up the dns to resolve correctly in or out of network with just one name. So, if mail.domain.com uses the external ip when out of network and the internal ip in network, the Exchange autodiscover settings could be set to mail.domain.com for both sides and this would fix the Mac mail issue. It looks like they are getting closer and have provided a fix that is working for a lot of users but not all - that could be because they are not starting from scratch and something is still hanging on to old settings.

We were lucky enough to be switching our domain from a split domain to a single named domain when ML came out and that resolved my mail issue before 10.8.1.

Hope this helps or at least makes a little sense!

It makes perfect sense, thanks for posting, far from being rare a .local address (lan side) and a .com etc (wan side) is common, this issue is not restricted to Macs, I have seen many Windows networks in the same situation: almost invariably the cause lies at the feet of the IT dept.

Oddly enough, exactly the same behavior for me. I have to leave the "Use Autodiscover Service" box checked in order to get it to stop overwriting my manual server settings. Really strange, but I guess I'm not complaining (at least everything seems to be working).

After installing 10.8.1 and after adjusting the settings. Mail started to look like its working and getting emails. But emails and folders still are lost and the inboxes are turning blank once in a while. It doesnt help rebuilding the mail boxes. The only thing that seems to help is to remove the account and to reinstall it over again. But I have several exchange accounts on different domains and lots and lots of emails.

Please can someone tell me if there is any way of upgrading back to Lion without having to erase everything in my computer and start over. I would like to install LIon over ML and get a working computer again. This is to much hazzle for me to constantly having to check my iPad if I have new mail.

I have an Apple USB stick with Lion on it. How can i go back without all the hazzle?

Please help

Thanks Stoffel66,

but I have to do it on several macs at the company. So I really would need a way of reinstalling Lion without having to erase everything on the hard drives. I feel the time it takes is to long and the risk is to great. Is there a way of doing this without having to erase the drives? The best solution is to be able to Force install Lion over/on top of ML.

Please, if someone has a magic way. Let me know.

Best.
