AS I posted with my Little Snitch pics it does not use those ports.

(well actually it might but only during Screen Sharing as this is on a random port)

Hi,

This is technically /Users/Home Folder/Library/Preferences

In Lion and Mountain Lion this folder is hidden and the only access is in the Finder's Go Menu and by Holding the ALT key down.

(Library/Preferences could also refer to Hard Drive/Library/Preferences which is somewhere else)

Have you tried setting up FaceTime with this Apple ID ?

This app also stores the Apple ID to the imagent.plist

Hi,

I am wondering if we are running into the fact that everyone is trying to do this and the iMessages servers are busy.

As FaceTime uses the same IMAgent.plist and would be invoked by Messages when you want to Video to a iMessage contact it would seem there are also links of sorts at the server end (you also need to "Activate" an Apple ID to use with FaceTime)

As you also seem to be having issues with FaceTime as well we might be looking at busy Servers.

Have you logged into MyApplyID to see what's going on with your account....? I had similar issues (worked for some services and not for others) when i installed Lion.... I too had a legacy .mac address that had been transferred fro dotMac-> mobile Me then to Apple ID system....

Turned out that my "alternate email address" which was my mac.com address (after they started giving out me.com addresses) kept dropping from my account page unbeknownst to me... it still worked for some services, but not for others....

It took a few tries to get it to "stick" on my account page - so if you see this is the problem, add the alternate email address again, save, log out, wait 20 minutes then log back in to see if it's still there... if not, just do it all over again. Apple tech support never figured out why the email address at mac.com would spontaneously drop, but after a number of tries to reinstate it, it finally stuck, so I didn't really care why,,,,

You seem to be responding to duncan.alan's post about reinstalling Mountain Lion.

Have you checked your Date & Time Settings ?

Messages sends stuff that is date stamped to remain in sync with the various servers you could log in to.

duncan.alan also lists 9 other things he tried (All of which did work with the Message beta)

Have you tried any of those ?

I've tried the 9 topics and reinstall the ML and right now I've sent to trash the file com.apple.imagent.plist, but the problem continues. Already checked Date and Time and it's ok.

I still can't log on iMessage.

I'm sure that the problem is not the Apple ID, because in my MBP I have no issues in logging on iMessage and the same way in iPad 2 and iPhone 4GS, but in iMac it doesn't log.

The symptom is: I can't activate imessage and can't log on Facetime.

obs: I didn't install the Messages beta before.

Hi,

My feeling is that at the moment everyone is trying to do this before the Olympic Opening Ceremony and the iMessages Servers are not coping.

I would caution a wait.

I am also finding I am not getting some emails from discussions that have been updated and going to Mountain Lion then the Messages filter is not presenting the posts in the same order (I am trying to work from Bottom Up (Oldest first) )

I too will be breaking off for the ceremony

When I had the issue, I was able to log into all services via my ipad and iphone and into iTunes on my Mac as well as into the Apple Store and sign into the discussions... but I couldn't activate Facetime on my Mac... seems some services were able to figure out that it was me without the alternate email address in my Apple ID and others weren't -- have you checked there? It only take a minute https://appleid.apple.com

[I did have the Messages beta installed and had no problems with the Messages install in ML]

i have been experiencing the same "Could not sign into iMessage. Please check network setting and try again." issue since yesterday. i finally solved my problem after talking to the Apple Tech Support team.

1. Shut down laptop.

2. Switch on laptop again. immediately hold down the left "SHIFT" key until u get into the log in screen. By doing this, ur laptop will be in "Safe Boot" mode.

3. Sign into iMessage using Apple ID. (i was able to sign into iMessage for the first time on my Mac since getting ML)

4. Shut down laptop again.

5. This time switch laptop on normally.

6. You should be able to use iMessage normally.

Hope this helps. it did for me!

Cheers
