I have the same exact issue. 😟

Please help. I tried everything. I found these but to no avail. still cant connect.

Fix #1: Add a New Network Location & Renew DHCP

This may work best for those who upgraded from a previous version of OS X to Mountain Lion but if you’re having the wifi drop issue go ahead and do it anyway because it is consistently successful with addressing wireless issues:

  • Open System Preferences from the  Apple menu and choose “Network”
  • Pull down the “Location” menu and choose “Edit Locations…”
  • Click the [+] button to add a new location, name it whatever you want then click Done
  • Back at the “Network” screen, click the “Network Name” menu and join the wireless network

Your wireless connection may now be active and working fine, but renew the DHCP lease anyway:

  • From the Network panel, click on the “Advanced” button in the lower right corner, then click the “TCP/IP” tab
  • Make sure “Configure IPv4:” is set to “Using DHCP” and then click the “Renew DHCP Lease” button, click “Apply” when prompted
  • The appropriate DHCP settings should be renewed from the connected router, click “OK” and exit out of System Prefs

User uploaded fileThe network location and DHCP renewal tip resolved similar wifi problems in Lion, and it seems to work in Mountain Lion too for many users.

Fix #2: Change MTU Size to Prevent Dropped Connections

This is a bit geeky but bare with us: MTU stands for Maximum Transmission Unit and controls the largest packet size allowed for transmission over the network. If this setting is greater than network capacity, the computer will experience packet loss and dropped connections. The default setting of 1500 is somewhat aggressive and some networks reject packets of that size, but it turns out that 1453 is just small enough to maintain a consistent connection with most networks but just large enough to not cause any slowdowns, it’s the magic number and an old cisco networking secret.

  • Open System Preferences from the  Apple menu and select “Network”
  • Click the “Advanced” button in the lower corner, followed by the “Hardware” tab
  • Pull down the “Configure” menu and set to “Manually”
  • Change “MTU” to “Custom” and set the field to “1453″
  • User uploaded file
  • Click “OK” and close out of Network preferences

Be sure you’re joined on a wireless network, close out of System Preferences, and enjoy the internet as usual.

This is so incredibly frustrating. I switched over to Apple products in 2007 because this kind of BS was so rare, now it is non-f**ing stop with this machine. I can't even stay connected to the internet for 2 minutes. I had to to copy this message just so I wouldn't lose it before I posted. I recently bought an ASUS with Windows 7 and it has been a dream compared to this nightmare, the only reason I'm using this Mac now is that I pulled my ASUS off the table and it got all screwy. I am so done with you Apple, I rather use my busted Windows computer than this worthless hunk of trash that's sitting on my lap now.

I've tried every single fix I've come across on the web to no avail. The only thing that gives me temporary relief is restarting the computer. And that gives me an hour of continuous connection, at best. Why did Apple suddenly become bottom teir? They had such a good thing going. Those $$$ got to enticing and they are letting the customers pay the sacrifice with no reprise or reprimand or anything that would salvage their reputation in my eyes.

I have an iMac (early 2009) with ML update. Now I can not "read" the 5 GHz wifi signal and the Time Capsule is not copying data from this iMac. The Time Capsule is copying 1 MB in 24 hours through the 2.4 GHz wifi signal. No Apple support. No problem solution. And a high risk if I lose the data.

My Mac Book Pro (early 2012) is working perfectly. The same for iPod's and iPad's.

But I need help with my iMac!! What's going on with Apple???

Hi Tatan

To cover the first issue i found on mine. Did you go into Airport Utility and click on your time capsule and then go into wireless settings and then advanced? I had something similar setting up on ML and the default for TC in my case had 5ghz not set up. The set up is easy once you are broadcasting on 2.4ghz, just click the tick box and its done....

Hope this helps...

Best Regards

John

Hey,

I moved some days ago into a new flat and now I got exactly the same issue.

My internet connection drops every 10 to 20 minutes although the signal in the upper bar is shown to be strong. I can't open a website or anything else. Although the signal is strong, the wifi speed is between 5 and 36 mbit.

Even if the internet connection works, it is pretty slow. My flatmates with windows 7 got up to 15 mbit and I got 0.1 to 3 mbit.

I tried many things, which were mentioned here but I didnt have success.

But I got the impression, if I start a VPN connection after restaring OS X, the connection seems to be a bit more stable? Did anyone noticed that as well?

Christoph

Edit: My Wifi connection doesnt have any encryption at the moment (WEP; WPA...)

Just bought a Retina Display 15" last week. No problems for the first week with anything besides this annoying new share and be connected to everything Apple has going on.

Then I visited my parents for Thanksgiving and now I feel like throwing my near $3000 computer in the trash. I get wifi connection for all of about 30 seconds before it goes out (though airport shows full strength). I've tried literally every fix on this thread to no avail. Only temporary fix is to turn the airport off and then back on to buy me another 30 seconds.

Apple, for the love of god, get your heads out of your own smug ***** and please fix this garbage nonsense before I deploy.

I have an enourmous amount of problems since I installed the last update three days ago.

I have a rMBP 15", bought last august. All worked fine untill i did install the last ML update.

Now my WIFI connections drops constantly. But not only for me, for everyone in the house. I have a LinkSys EA2700 router. WIFI works perfectly until I open my Macbook. As soon as I do that WIFI does not work anymore on the router. Two other laptops (with Windows), my iPad en two phones also have lost their connection as soon as I open up my Apple.... Only thing I can do is reset my router and hope it comes back, sometimes after one reset ,sometimes after 6 resets.

So, APPLE HELP!!! What the **** is going on that starting up my Macbook makes my router stop working....

Nov 29, 2012 5:13 AM in response to Bob Allison

Bob Allison's fix is the only thing that has worked for me:

The solution to this is usually very simple (or has been for all machines I have dealt with).

Go to Network Preferences then in the lower left click the service 'wheel' icon.

Select set service order and drag your WiFi to the top of the list. Click OK then Apply.

Obviously, there's a bug there somewhere, because WiFi should not have seniority to the other wired network types, but there you go. This actually works.

Just in case anybody from Apple actually reads this or care about this bug (sigh), I have also found that even with WiFi set down in the service order (as it should be), running a ping in a terminal window will keep WiFi up and running as well. There's a bigger problem in the stack somewhere, I think. This probably isn't a WiFi problem per-se.

No solution at this time...

- Changing location is not working.

- Reinstalling Mountain Lion is not working.

- I can't install Snow Leopard or Lion because Mountain Lion is not supporting old OS X versions. Now Apple decides what I can install on my machine. I remember I paid USD 3.000 for my iMac and now Apple is the owner!!

Still without Apple solution. They say "we can not do anything. Go to the store or go to the forums". In the store there is people without technical knowledge and in the forums are lots of users with the same big problem..

Where is Apple?? Can I decide what software install on my computer??? Apple you are close to make me move to PC...

I have been having the same problem with wifi disconnecting, unable to connect, very slow download speeds occassionally etc just as others are reporting on this and numerous other threads. I just found this simple tip which I hadn't seen after many hours of searching. I tried everything suggested except re-install the OS.

New macbook pro 13 inch(just one week)

Updated to 10.8.2. wifi is connected but no internet

When i turn wifi off and on it works for 5 to 10 minutes.

I've tried

Cleared all router/Airport entries in Keychain, "forgot" all Prefered Networks, created new Location, renewed DHCP

Changed MTU to 1453

Router was already set to WPA/WPA2

Updated firmware on router

Go to Genius Bar 4 times, Not even Help~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

How long Apple will ignore us and test our patience???

My work has become unbearable. I have to close the applications every time and restart my MBP to get the Internet working only for short time. Then I need to repeat everything again and again.

No such problems with previous OS Lion and Bootcamp Windows but with Mountain Lion my work turned into nightmare.

ps. clean install, etc. and problem is not resolved. wifi internet connection still drops constantly. ty Apple :/

This morning my connection wasn't working and i'm now using a wired connection. Tried wifi and after rebooting a "few" times i finally got a connection. I new the broadband was working as mu Linux server worked fine. Finally found that it had changed the workgroup setting. Reset and now working. When it changed the workgroup setting it also couldn't get the right IP address. Why is apple making a meal of this, my linux and windows boxes never have a network problem. between this and apples miror displays, most expensive mirrors in the world, maybe it is time to change and get a linux laptop up and running with a decent anti glare sceen.
