I think I got it: I use a couple Logitech mice with my iMac. I threw out the Logitech Control Center preferences pane, then reinstalled. While reinstalling, I got an error message--something about an installation error involving an app that wanted to install in the wrong place--but the Logitech Control Center pane nevertheless appeared in System Prefs. After a reboot, the mice are working properly, and I have not yet had the hover issue reappear. If I can go a couple weeks without a recurrence, I'll probably reinstall Mountain Lion for one reason: my family and I really dig the screen saver that shows random pix from the iPhoto library.

Fingers crossed...

Hi Everyone!

I had the same problem.

I tried everything from this forum, starting from deleting files, getting into guest account to restarting in safe boot. NOTHING worked. So I went to Apple Genius (White City, London), they tried many things and could not figure out what was the problem, but eventually we got down to a point where we noticed that it is an issue with the internal intel graphics card which is used for not heavy graphics applications. They decided to replace my logic board and woalaa! It WORKS like a charm now.

So if you are far from an apple store or didn't purchase your mac in apple store chances are that you are in for a quite expensive fix here, otherwise its free. I didn't pay a penny.

Just in case anyone else is having problems. I am now using Maverisk and my problem was that the Dock would only appear on the left or right but not at the bottom. It had worked properly earlier in the day and I tried most of the above without success, and then I realised the problem had arisen sometime after changing over my displays. I have two, so I removed one and everything was OK, I replaced the second and the problem was back. I then changed the display resolutions and the Dock positions went back to normal.
