@Ricky Barnaby,

Thankyou, Sir. While the Activity Window is something that I used on a constant basis (I'm a web dev, so, it was an easy way to see if some resource was not loading), the screenshots you provided (Show Page Resources) does the same thing. If not better.

The Activity Window was good for an 'at-a-glance' view as to what is happening on a given page.

I don't know... I was very frustrated that I couldn't use the Activity Window on Safari to download videos anymore... so at the end I gave up on Safari... and used Chrome with a plugin that downloads the videos similar like Orbit downloader.

Ps: Don't click on Download Now with CNET installer Enabled... that one is for PC... use the "Direct Download Link" underneath instead

For those who used Activity Monitor to download YouTube videos:

To rephrase what yyyannick said, first install 'ClickToFlash' extension in Safari. When it's installed, start the YouTube video and while it's playing right-click inside the video and a menu of options will appear. One of the options is 'Download Video'. Click on this option and the video will start downloading.

Thanks, yyyannick! 🙂

Well... this is indeed a bummer. I use the Activity window to download things from Youtube all the time. Some that I just want to have in HD, others that I can't even view properly in Safari due to problems with Flash/Apple.

Now that's all on the wayside.

Found a copy of Safari 5.1.7, but can't install it due to the new version being embedded into the system. Can't delete Safari 6 due to OSX requiring it to operate. Don't have Timeline running, so I can't pull a Marty McFly on this.

So, for the first time since I uploaded from 8.6 on my G4 PowerMac (when I was using Internet Explorer and, dare I say, Netscape Navigator), I have installed a browser other than Safari to use for the first time.

Downloaded Firefox and installed with a Video Helper add-on. Seems to work well for Youtube so far. Though I can't tell if it is a direct file I'm downloading, or a converted one.

Then again... Maybe this is an elaborate scheme to get people to use Timeline more?

Unfortunately downgrade isn't an option on 10.8

i also feel it worth mentioning the activity window is for much more then just downloading specific files. while you can get hat with inspector fine. My main reason for using activity window is for viewing, ACTUAL ACTIVITY. Page load stalls, broken connections (ie host not found) or something. FIgure out why my page is loading slow, or not loading at all. These are things not replicated by the resource inspector. I even use activity window to assess download progress.

For example, i open a page to watch a 42 min episode. the video starts stalling during playback so I open activity window to see the videos file size. I assess it's a 102MB .flv file. at a length of 42min playtime. i assess that for it to stream without pauses i need to have a download rate of 41.4kbps or greater. With activity window i can get a pretty good feel looking at the file download too wether or not the current rate is actually acceptable. if i'm unsure, i open activity monitor app and check network tab to see current bandwidth download rate to confirm.

Basically, i can fully assess and diagnose a stream as functional or broken, and why. in event the download rate is not high enough to avoid pauses, i can further assess if it's bad enough to find a new source for video, or if it's off just barely and all it needs is a 3-5min pause to offset the difference, upon which i can return and hit play and see it through beginning to end with no pausing or stuttering from video buffering.

That may seem like a lot of trouble, but it sounds more complicated in words then it really is, the activity window progress is very fast and seemless for me. It's something that's just been there for years. Activity window is more then just some hack people use to download video content, it's a tool with significant diagnostic uses that's invaluable to some.

Just want to add my vote to the brain deadness of removing Activity viewer. It seems that Apple is now dedicated to creating a simplified, but totally opaque, user experience. The kind of "we know what's best for you" that made me leave Windows for Apple over 15 years ago.

I guess I'll need to switch to Firefox or Chrome. I don't know if it is just me, but when I logged in to comment, I couldn't copy and paste my password. I've seen this before in badly implemented (for users) websites.

Since this follows on the heals of my just having to replace a 17" MacBook Pro with a refurb because Apple has decided to discontinue the 17" model, it leaves me wondering if this is the beginning of the end for my Apple relationship.
