It only works on early 2011+ models. Why Apple limited it to this, I do not know (perhaps ask Marketing as technically your laptop will support it).

I'm sure that somewhere in the system config there's a way to trick Mountain Lion into supporting it, but I have yet to find it.

The annoyance for me is the checkbox in System Preferences leads one to believe it is supported!

I am very dispointed in Apple for not supporting my summer 2010 imac or 2010 macbook pro. I like all the other features in OS X 10.8 but I mainly bought mountain lion to airplay with my apple tv. Apple didn't even mention what features would be missing in older models. If ound this out on wikipedia. I would at least like $9.99 to buy airparrot. That would make up for it. I'm not necessarily mad about the missing feature, but that they didn't mention what features would or would not. I hope that Apple fixes this error with a software update or I won't be buying anything from apple again!

Airplay is only supported on mid 2011 or later machines not because of a ploy by Apple but because hardware H264 encoding is required on the GPU for Airplay to function correctly, machines earlier than mid 2011 do not have hardware H264 encoding..

I got my mac mini in early 2011. Airplay wont work. I just got two apple tv"s just for the airplay feature. And i updated all my macs. This is bull. I am reterning the TV's. And i will probably ask for a refund for mountain lion.

Maybe i should stop being hard core apple fan, because apple doesnt give a rats. I have over 10 apple products at home and $1000 + in apps and music. I will not spend another penny until this issue is resolved.

I am with all of you. I got my computer in October of 2010. It should NOT be out of date after less than two years. I, like many of you, was looking forward to Airplay Mirroring more than any other feature of Mountain Lion. I was practically going to buy the OS for the one feature. I was fortunate enough to see the fine print that it was not supported on my computer. Needless to say, I did not download the OS. I am very unhappy that I will now be forced to helplessly watch the updates for the apps on my computer march ahead of me. If Apple released a patch or a similar download that would enable me to use Airplay Mirroring, even if it cost extra, I would download it in a heartbeat. Although I must say, if Apple did charge extra for it, it would greatly chip away at my respect for them.
Rant hat off now. If anyone knows of a "patch" that would allow me to use this feature, or a program that does a similar function, please say something!

Cheer,

Jellyfrank

That's just kind of silly. My 2011 MBP with a third-party SSD won't work with Power Nap... does that mean I'm ditching Apple? No. To each his own, though... go ahead and dump all of your Apple products and buy Windows machines, Android/MS tablets, Android phone, the works. Just because one feature of the OS doesn't work with your Mac.

I guess I should have bought a Windows machine when I found that my 2006 MBP couldn't run Lion?
