HI,

At present we have two "Solutions"to this issue.

One is to Restore using Time Machine the files involved on the Lion Machine.

On the 5th Aug in this Thread jkaram posted that he (I presume he) had the Lion user Change the Resolution of the Screen (System Preferences > Displays)

If it helps at all, I have upgraded both my machines (Mac Pro & MacBook Air) to Mountain Lion. This is when the problem started. The issue only happens on the Air, and only happens with some connections (i.e. to certain people). Both machines have run all sofware updates.

It happens in all the (test) accounts I have on that machine too.

So in summary…

* started after Mountain Lion.

* I had the Messages Beta installed on the Air (which now has the problem)

* sharing always works for the Mac Pro

* sharing sometimes works on Air (depending on who I'm sharing with)

I'm guessing it may be to do with the Beta having been installed.

HI,

Can you try changing the Display resolution ?

This does seem to work in Lion and iChat 5 when trying to Screen Share to Mountain Lion and Messages.

I see that you are having issues with some Buddies when using the MacBook Air.

If they are using Lion get them to change the Display resolution.

I am having this same issue as well (white screen when attempting to perform iChat screen sharing).

I am noticing similar phenomena as others such as I can send my screen to the other remote computer but I only get a white screen from the other computer.

I can, however, observe the remote computer's cursor moving around on the white screen that is displayed on my computer. Also, if I move my curson to into the white screen (as though to remote control the other computer), the user on the remote computer can see the cursor moving around on their computer. Further, if I right click with my mouse, the remote user notes that the small control window pops up on their computer.

We've tried changing the screen resolution on both computers but this has not yielded an results.

Video chat works just fine with both iChat and Facetime.

Both systems are running Mac OS X 10.7 (I think that both are 10.7.4 as I think that we've both run Software Update while trying to address this problem.)

HI,

In that case I would get the Lion Users to run "Repair Permissions" in Applications/Utilities > Disk Utility > first Aid Tab.

Happy to report that changing the display resolution worked for me. I had this issue with Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion, and I think the white-screen Mac (Mountain Lion) was at a higher resolution than mine (Snow Leopard). When they took theirs down a notch, I was able to see everything fine

Thanks for the group brainstorm -- it led to a resolution for me.

Just to echo--hoping it helps Apple notice--I also have this problem. I don't have the time now to really focus in on the circumstances, but it did happen in the last several days, and i did run a software update in that time period. I also got an update/speed boost from Comcast during that period, which forced a reset of my Airport Extreme and my cable modem.

I'm on Lion, my share-ee is on Snow Leopard, and my screen is showing up as white on his end (he thinks he's screen sharing with heaven!). iChat has become a valuable tool for me to share documents with my clients, and this is a devastating blow to my productivity.

On another note, does anybody know if iMessage in Mountain Lion will continue to allow for screen sharing as I have always done in iChat? I'm hoping I don't have to go out and get GoToMeeting or soemthing like that.

Thanks to all who take the time to help out on these forums!

Note: I have tried changing screen resolution, which did not help. I also repaired permissions on my computer.

HI,

iMessage(s) is something that the Messages app in Mountain Lion can send

These are messages to and from iOS devices and is separate fromthe iChat functions which still exist within Messages.

Messages will do the same Screen Sharing that iChat 4, 5 and 6 do.

iChat to iChat using AIM (valid) Names or Jabber valid IDs.

To be clear you enter an Apple ID to "register" with iMessages and use the same Apple ID on your iPhone or iPad.

This is added to the Preferences > Accounts as another "Account" although it does not have a Buddy list.

Connections to Buddies (iChat Style IMs) or to Contacts (iMessages) are from a centralised Messages window that does Tabbed Chats, allows your to access Buddy List or the Address Book for Contacts and send the Messages (whether they are IMs or iMessages)

Hey Shannon,

Did you end up getting this fixed?!

After 40+ hours of phone support with Apple and AT&T (isp) and countless more hours searching the net for answers, I was FINALLY able to fix this issue which was driving me crazy the past month or so!!!! 🙂 Unbelieveable that no one in Apple camp had a clue about this...

It is exactly what you thought, related to the Remote Desktop Client update in July.

The guy who provided instructions on how to restore those files (earlier in the thread), forgot a couple steps so it took me a while to figure out how to access the files in TM without having to restore the whole thing, but finally I prevailed and went thru the rest of the steps and fixed the problem for myself and two other friends/family in other parts of the country who were experiencing the same thing.

Anyway, let me know if anyone here still has NOT fixed the issue and I will gladly post a step-by-step on how I successfully got screen sharing back up and running.

Thanks to everyone in this thread, without all your input I would have never been able to fix it. 🙂

Apple, do you read this stuff or what?! This update you pushed out to millions has screwed our iChat up! We, the users, have identified the problem, now can you please get it fixed?!

Until there's bug fix on Remote Desktop Client 3.6, you should NOT update to it when software update prompts you to do so.

Good luck!

I'm a very happy camper right now 🙂

Hey Theotis,

Check my last post in regards to 100% fix for this issue, if you haven't fixed it already.

Note for everyone: I will also add that while the fix worked for 10.7.4, 10.5.8 users, it did NOT fix the issue for my grandmother who is running Mountain Lion.

On hers the problem is a bit different - she was never getting a white ichat screen on screenshare to begin with, instead, her issue is she is UNABLE to share HER screen with anyone. The option is grayed out. We can all share our screen with her now, but she is not able to share her screen with us.

No clue what all that is about but we are calling Apple Tech on Monday. If anyone has heard of this issue and knows a fix, please do share!

Thanks,

-Sky

Sky, so sorry to hear you had so much trouble getting things to work, even with Apple's help. My guess is that they're just not seeing it there, so they're not on top of how to fix it.

Yes, I have everything working now. I deleted the upgrade for Remote Desktop Client and restored the previous version. That worked on both my client's and my computers. Then we both upgraded to Mountain Lion and the problem disappeared entirely. Do you suppose that version 3.6 is only Mountain Lion compatible?

Anyway, everything works now in both Lion and Mountain Lion.

gpheff, Davyx posted a step-by-step here: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4140408?answerId=19150052022#19150052022 Hopefully that will help.

Thanks again, everyone. I really appreciate all the tips your shared. 🙂
