Q: Keeping Applications as Fullscreen by default.

Hi guys, I've asked this question before (on a Lion installation) and not recieved any response.  Have also seen many, many people ask the same question on here and other forums with no solid answer yet.  Upgraded to Mountain Lion today by the way, partly because I hoped it would fix this problem.

The problem is that I would like all my applications (that are capable of it) to run in fullscreen by default each time they are launched.  Currently iTunes will always launch in fullscreen mode but most other applications will not, even if I have quit the program while in full screen.  I especially would like Safari to open in fullscreen, and when I upgraded to Lion it did for a time but then stopped.

From what I can gather from other responses to this question online, it seems that OSX should remember your preferences (whether you have apps running in fullscreen or not) but there appear to be many people with my problem.

So far the only step I have taken is deleting Safaris preference file but this did not solve the issue.  I am sure it is something very very simple but I cannot for the life of me figure it out.

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

P.S I do not have resume enabled.

    There's your problem.

Don't use Safari myself, but with Resume enabled, Mail and Calendar open in full-screen mode between restarts here. If you quit an app and then relaunch it, whether or not Resume is enabled, it will open in a normal window.

Hi - I've had this solution offered before but I really don't want resume enabled.  I don't find it conducive to good workflow, especially with something like Word.  I also like having a clean slate so to speak with all new apps.  From what I can understand you don't NEED resume enabled to have applications launch in fullscreen.  iTunes does it by default and my safari used to until randomly stopping one day.

Not sure I understand what you're saying.

I really don't want resume enabled.  I don't find it conducive to good workflow, especially with something like Word.  I also like having a clean slate so to speak with all new apps.

A full screen app is given its own Desktop. If you don't use multiple Desktops, maybe it's time to incorporate them into your workflow, assigning each app or group of apps to its own desktop. This way, you'll have a clean slate so to speak with all new apps. (Also, wondering why it's necessary to shut down your computer so often. Might be easier to just close the lid when you're finished with a session.)

From what I can understand you don't NEED resume enabled to have applications launch in fullscreen.

    Citation?

Champ, it doesn't seem like you are trying to be very helpful at all, maybe stay out of this discussion. I'm after a solution to a very specific problem which I'm quite certain is some sort of bug.  Many other users have reported the same issue..

I'll let the "Champ" thing pass.

To the point, none of those discussions mentions Resume. All of those discussions refer to (old versions of) Safari. As I said, I don't use Safari, but your OP says:

I would like all my applications (that are capable of it) to run in fullscreen by default each time they are launched.

That only happens if you use Resume.

    Best of luck to you!

For the third time, I haven't read anywhere that you need to use Resume to have applications launch in fullscreen by default, and in fact I'm certain you DON'T as iTunes will open in fullscreen everytime (like I said before, twice) and my Safari USED to launch every time in fullscreen (without resume enabled).  As per the links I gave, one user actually stated that his Safari was launching in fullscreen by default without resume enabled..

I'm with you on this tomchalmers,

Before I upgrade to 10.8 most of my apps that where full screen reopend in the state they where closed in. Safari did this but doesn't in 10.8, you open it, select full screen, close it and when you open it again it's back to a single window. In 10.7 without resume enabled full screen apps states where memorised even after a OS restart you could open that app and it would return to the full screen mode you last closed it in. I also agree with you that there should be a option to open apps as default in fullscreen.

P.S. I also find Tuttle completed un helpful in this thread. :-)

System Preferences > General > Uncheck "Close windows when quitting an application". This worked for me with Safari.

I just noticed this problem today and your suggestion worked for me. Thanks

Well I spoke to soon. It does cause Safari to open in full screen mode but it also opens to the last page I visited. I want Safari to open to my homepage and in full screen. Hopefully Apple will solve this in the next update.

Well there you go. I noticed my windows wouldn't open in FS sometime after a Lion update or Mt. Lion upgrade. I looked for a solution sparingly but gave up. Way to go. Thank you for chiming in. Save the long drawn out thread banter with two sentences. Thank you! Ha
