In spotlight, type in Java, and click on Java Preferences in the list - it will then start downloading and installing the new version. (my java version is now 1.6.0_33-b03-424)

Thanks. that did it!
BTW, just being pedantic, but all you did was install the Java Runtime Environment. All the other Java components were installed when you installed ML. Once you do that, ensure that you use the preferences app to enable plug-ins and Web Start apps. 😉
Being pedantic is good in these situations. I wasn't sure what to do in the Prefs pane and was inclined to check the Web Start Apps box but feared it might be a security risk and just left it until an app asked for permission. Now I know. Thanks again.
If you need, you can get java version 7 here. Just download the development kit, and the regular runtime is installed as well.
Awesome! This helped me too!
guikos: I had the same problem. Download it from http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1515 instead.
Qerub: many thanks, that solved my problem.
This is a better link:

If you're getting weird rendering and problems with Java, also check that you don't have Fastest Tube installed. This extension seriously messes up Java.
hello, sorry to hijack: but applets won't run after the 2012-006 update with JRE7u9
my thread overhere: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4442781
when i type java it dosent come up with java preferences
That implies that you installed the Java update which removed that app. If you're running Snow Leopard, it should show up.
But this entire thread is under OS X Mountain Lion. That kinda makes what happens in Snow Leopard moot, yes?
