I have OS-X SERVER (10.8) installed and still can't understand Apple's stance on not supporting the older AE's...

I am aware Apple only wants to support only NEW products...I'm still a little PO'd my 17" iMac can't run Mountain lion just because of the 32bit graphics card...give me a break...How hard can that be to support?

May be if Apple have removed those usefuls airport utilities functions, and lot of others (websharing, ftp sharing, ...) it's to force us to buy their OSX SERVER...

Buying a new MAC would have the same issue, so I'm not seeing the logic in that statement.

Windows better...I hope that wa meant as a joke...I wouldn't want to go back to refreshing the build every 6 months, the hassle with virus protection, the ongoing registry issues and cleaning...And I'd really miss the GREAT Apple and Third party developer software and their quick responses....TWO DIFFERENT WORLDS...

I am, however, disappointed that Apple messed up Safari in a few ways...this issue being one of them. It's only been a week..those on the bleeding edge always have the most issues...While I was hoping for an early fix, I'll give it a little more time.

In comparison Microsoft have done better... Windows Vista/seven is installable on all pc (isn't it ? no ? )...

In today's Macworld Weekly the author confirmed the earlier recommendation about installing Airport Utility 5.6.1.

Reader Nick Hamilton finds himself stuck between old hardware and a new operating system. He writes:

I have an older AirPort Express Base Station. I recently installed Mountain Lion and have found that its version of AirPort Utility doesn’t work with this Base Station—when I try to select the base station I’m told that I need AirPort Utility 5.6. I downloaded that version but when I attempt to install it Mountain Lion tells me it’s not supported. What do I do?

Mountain Lion is telling you an untruth. That version of AirPort Utility will run on your Mac (even under Mountain Lion) and work with your Base Station. The fly in the ointment in this case is the installer. It simply refuses to install this perfectly fine utility.

The way around is to extract the utility from the installer package. For this kind of thing I always turn to CharlesSoft’s $20 Pacifist. Pacifist lives to open .pkg package files, .dmg disk images, and .zip, .tar, .tar.gz, .tar.bz2, and .xar archives and extract their contents. I ran this very package through Pacifist, located the application, extracted it, and it ran like a champ on my MacBook Pro—allowing me to configure an ancient AirPort Express Base Station.

So if you can't restore it from a backup, it looks like that's the way to go (for now).

I reported it as a bug here:

I use Mountain Lion, too, also Airport extreme 1st Generation.

In System Preferences > Network, I deleted the "Wi-Fi" (or WLAN) entry from the list of network interfaces on the left-hand side of the window.

I then re-added it.

I then selected "Join Other Network" in the "Network Name" drop-down, and entered the Network Name and WPA2 Personal password of the network.

Many thanks to the user who posted this. Unfortunately I can't find the forum anymore.
