Quick update…I found an easy (and free) way to install Apple's Airport Utility 5.6.1 with Lion/Mountain Lion.

1. Download the free application "Unpkg" unpkg-4.5.zip file here: http://www.timdoug.com/unpkg/ (it should automatically unzip)

2. Go to the "unpkg 4.5" folder in your downloads (or wherever you saved it) and drag the "unpkg" app into your Applications folder.

3. Download Airport Utility 5.6.1 here: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US

4. Go to the downloaded AirportUtility56 file and double click it to open the installer (AirportUtility will appear on your desktop).

5. Double click on the AirportUtility dmg on your desktop (a new Finder window with the AirportUtility56.pkg will open).

6. Open your new Unpkg application.

7. Drag the AirportUtility56.pkg onto the Unpkg app window.

8. A new folder, "AirportUtility56", will appear on your desktop

9. Open the "AirportUtility56" folder and go to Applications > Utilities

10. Drag "Airport Utility 5.6" into your Applications folder

That's it. From now on you can open Airport Utility 5.6 to use it. I noted that Airport Utility 5.6 doesn't appear in Launchpad (likely due to the fact that it wasn't installed normally), so you have to open it from your Applications folder is all.

It looks a little complicated, but it's really very simple once you do it.

Hope that helps!

Thanks for everyone for installing tips for 5.6 version

Just to pour some oil into fire:

I have my Airport extreme base station for a while now. I set SNMP to be available via WAN a while back when I needed it because of some more complicated setup (before 6.0) and forgot about it (unfortunately). Now latest version (6.2) reminded me of this (warning). With no edit option (edit was grayed out and, as all of you mentioned, there is no option to set SNMP settings by manually navigating configuration interface). So I was left with luckily 3 options:

1. leave it as it was with all the security risks I was reminded about, and be able to use it again in the "more complicated setup"

2. reset the router to factory defaults and be screwed next time I will need SNMP on WAN port (not to mention the (slight?) pain of setting everything again)

3. install 5.6 version as mentioned here (thank you all again) and configure it with 1 checkbox click

Way to go apple. I love(d) your products so far but you could at least leave an option to configure more advanced options for those of us who know and want/need to use them. (I know you want to protect us from ourselves, but please do not overdo it).

By the way: is there a way to officialy file a "complaint" or feature request to apple or this is enough?

Thanks for this post. I followed the instructions and it worked perfect. I can understand why Apple has disabled the feature, but I purchased the Time Capsule precisely so I could have a backup of my data somewhere remote and hidden, so that if something does happen to my computer, then the backup is safe. Apple should understand this use case, as I think it is quite normal, and enable this feature accordingly.

You're quite welcome...glad to be of service and fully agree with your points.
