Major UI Lag in Logic Pro 9.1.7 on OS 10.8?

Hi,

I've just completed my first session in Logic 9.1.7 on a Mac Pro Quad Xeon 2.6 after upgrading to Mountain Lion 10.8. I got through it, but experienced the following new bug (as compared to running in Lion 10.7.4:

I noticed that if Logic is currently playing when I double click on a plugin in the channel strip, and then try to stop the playback (keyboard or by clicking the transport in the arrange window), I will get from a 5-45 second lag before the app responds and actually stops. No mouse or keyboard commands seem to work while it's hanging up.

Workaround: Only open plugin windows when playback is stopped, and then playing and stopping works fine (although maybe a little more laggy than in the former OS still).

Is anyone else experiencing this or have any better workaround ideas?

Mac Pro, Mac OS X (10.7), Quad 2.66GHz, 16GB, 18TB HD / RAID

Odd, I wrote a post explaining that what was told to me was to update to iLife from Lion, but can't find it anywhere. Anyway, just incase, let me repost the info:

I got DEFINITIVE answers from a high-up Apple AR support. He said it is not a Logic issue, but a Lion and Mountain Lion Core Audio issue, and mentioned that the engineers are "working on it day and night to fix it."

He also listed two possible fixes, while the team is working on a fix for Mountain Lion. Here's what he wrote:

1) Downgrade to the Snow Leopard OS until this is fixed. I know this is a complete annoyance to hear, but truthfully a lot of people are doing it and it's solving the problem for them.

2) Do a clean install of iLife. This is also solving the problem for a lot of people, and is quite a bit less of a pain since most of the professional Logic audio community doesn't use Garageband in the first place. For some reason, a clean install of iLife (and really, Garageband) is doing the trick. There is some sort of conflict happening between Garageband and the Lion/MT Lion OS that is causing updated iLife files to not load properly. A fresh/clean install of iLife (essentially, back to the older version found in the Lion installer) is doing the trick in most cases. If he chooses this route, please make sure to tell him NOT to update iLife to it's most current version release as this sis where things seem to go wrong. The original download version from the Lion installer is the one he'll want to use, if possible.

One note on this- Some users are finding it difficult to extract the iLife installer data from the Lion installer itself since Lion was our first App Store downloadable OS. But, if he goes to the installer (might have to redownload from App Store) and right-clicks on the installer file, select 'Show Package Contents', and the installer data for iLife can be found inside."

Hopefully that helps, at least in the meantime. I unfortunately can't install Snow Leopard on my 2012, Mac Pro but it's good to know there's one more thing I can try. Anyone know where I can find the Lion installer?

The same problem with Retina Display.

I bought 2 weeks ago MacBook Pro i7 4 cores 2,6 Hz SSD 512 Gb 8 Gb RAM, Retina, OS X Lion 10.8.2.

I am new in Logic, also I am new in Mac, so

I have installed Logic, updated it and was exploring that beautiful program. But the first time when I got in my screen two Chan EQ from different tracks with "Analyzer" on - program began to work slower. When I had three Chan EQ at the same time with Analyzers it began to work much slower and so on.There was no any another plugins and there is only 3 track in my project.

It was terrible first dating with Mac and Logic, because this computer cost me lot of money,I specially buy that specifications for good production work.

And there was no ways for me to compare with another version of Os X or Logic

So I thoght that problems could be in my hardware.

My CPU loading showed 150% and my temperature could increase 95 C degrees

I tested this project in another MBP,the same project, the same Logic (the same installer pack)

The same features of hardware. The same Os X .The only difference is that another MBP hasn't Retina display and has non-SSD memory. It's computer of my friend and he bought it also 2-3 week ago.

And all of my manipulation with EQ was alright in another MBP,CPU was only 7%

So it's strange, why there is no problems in another computer.

I hope it's really bug in software and we need to wait for update.

Guys please could you check you CPU loading when you have this problem.

Has it also High Level ?

I've been reading every post, and I fully agree that we should be pestering Apple over the phone non-stop. But I finally have to put my foot down when I hear a comment like Leks133.

When on earth is it necessary to have 3 EQs open with all of the analyzers going on. As far as I know, there isn't a single professional producer who relies on the analyzer to do their job. That's what your EARS are for!

And if you're try to make two tracks fit together using equalizer, the best thing to do is to solo each one, EQ them, and then listen to how they fit. LISTEN.

So I know this is is a big bug. And I know that the bug affects more plugins than just the equalizer. But seriously, try mixing a song without using the equalizer analyzer turned on. Logic will run better and you'll likely grow as producer/recordist.

Hey Nusskappe,

I've stayed in contact with one of the senior people on Logic's support team about every five days. (From what she's told me they're located on the floor directly under the Logic Programmers. So at least word doesn't have to travel far and it seems they are working together closely to resolve the issue.) They're aware that it's a Mountain Lion issue....not a Logic issue specifically. That being said, if Logic isn't operating properly....It's a Logic issue regardless of "who's fault" it is.

The only work around she's given for people like myself (with a new Mac Pro so L and ML are my only system options) is to not use/adjust ANY graphical interface (EG: EQ with or without analyser on, compression etc.) while in playback. Stop playback, make your adjustment, close the plugin window and then hit play to listen to the adjustment. Yes...I know....ridiculous.

I replied back to her..

"It's a Digital Audio Workstation...you have to be able to hear something as you make adjustments.....That's like asking me to close a Photoshop file, make the color adjustments based off of memory and then open the file to see what the adjustment looks like." Unacceptable.

So long story short....there's not a workaround for people that are forced to use Lion or ML.

I asked again just yesterday about progress for a fix. My email stated... "Mountain Lion has had two updates very recently. An HP printer update and an iLife update. What about Logic?

Here's the response:

"No word on an update fixing this issue. I unfortunately will not know until it is released. Thank you again for checking in. If I hear something I will let you know!"

How the heck does a senior person NOT KNOW until it's released?! Is the fix going to magically just happen and the Logic team as well as Logic users going to just be....SUPRISED!

This is just a mess.

Oct 16, 2012 6:00 AM in response to sabin333

Nonsense, Sabin333... I have often had 3 eqs open all with analyzer engaged. Even if sometimes because I haven't closed one of them and they are buried under other windows. The point is, the app shouldn't be getting in the way of the creative or productive flow. You shouldn't have to put attention to keeping the bandaid over the wound when your job is to be creative or get through a project quickly.

BTW, when you are working with hundreds of voices that are all similar frequency, using your ears is important to let you know if something isn't working, but that analyzer helps to pinpoint exactly why.

Another BTW: this ML, L bug also effects other apps. And if the lag has ever happened to you for 2 minutes you will understand just how awful this bug is, as well as the fact that Apple has let it exist for well over a year. This is why we have to make a big deal about this - Apple is not paying attention and they need to.
