Major UI Lag in Logic Pro 9.1.7 on OS 10.8?

Hi,

I've just completed my first session in Logic 9.1.7 on a Mac Pro Quad Xeon 2.6 after upgrading to Mountain Lion 10.8. I got through it, but experienced the following new bug (as compared to running in Lion 10.7.4:

I noticed that if Logic is currently playing when I double click on a plugin in the channel strip, and then try to stop the playback (keyboard or by clicking the transport in the arrange window), I will get from a 5-45 second lag before the app responds and actually stops. No mouse or keyboard commands seem to work while it's hanging up.

Workaround: Only open plugin windows when playback is stopped, and then playing and stopping works fine (although maybe a little more laggy than in the former OS still).

Is anyone else experiencing this or have any better workaround ideas?

Fredo, if you recall, I am very familiar with the bug, since my name is all over these forums in regards to the bug.

Also, if you read my post:

"So I know this is is a big bug. And I know that the bug affects more plugins than just the equalizer. But seriously, try mixing a song without using the equalizer analyzer turned on. Logic will run better and you'll likely grow as producer/recordist."

But you haven't given me a real reason as to why I would need to look at the EQ for more than one instrument. Can you please explain to me how the analyzer allows you to "pinpoint" why multiple voices arn't "working?"

Because if the truth is that you forgot to close a few windows (like you mentioned), then you really should consider adding more organization to your "production workflow."

Like the rest of us, I anxiously wait for a fix for this bug. Let's continue to pester apple, but lets have some strait talk on here. Let's not try to convince a new user than having 9 EQs up and running is proper, normal behavior.

Well said Fredo.

"BTW, when you are working with hundreds of voices that are all similar frequency, using your ears is important to let you know if something isn't working, but that analyzer helps to pinpoint exactly why."

Sabin333, do a search for "Audio Masking issues" You'll understand why sometimes you NEED (not want) multiple visual analysers. Here's a great source...

The guy is to the point, no fluff, straight up good advise.

For example, I make my music using mostly my own voice. This can result in a build up of frequencies that is quite daunting to pinpoint, and looking at the eq with analyzer turned on is very helpful in that way. You just look for where the frequencies are spiking and take them down, using your ear simultaneously OF COURSE.

Your comment struck me as condescending. Why do you feel you have to teach users who are frustrated with a major App bug a lesson in mixing?

And the reason is in my post: sometimes you just don't want to take the time to locate multiple windows and close them. You shouldn't have to spend time making a neat work space rather then being creative.

Where did somebody suggest 9 EQs? But fact is, sometimes if I'm in the heat of a creative idea I am not paying attention to keeping my second window, where my eqs open up, neat. Nor do I want to.

Fredo. I totally understand your concerns. If you recall previous replies I've made to you--> I bought a new macbook just so I wouldn't have to deal with any slowness what-so-ever. So yes, I've been pushing for a bug fix as well. I don't want to buy a new expensive plugin just to find that it does not work.

However, in response to why I feel the need to "teach users" - I'm only giving the advice that I wish that other people would have given me early on. If someone is new to recording, don't you think that it's good to stress the importance of learning to rely on your ears instead of the visual analyzer? You call it condescending, I call it knowledge transfer.

P.S. MadDog15, great website, thanks for the referral, but I couldn't find any reference to using a visual analyzer. In fact in his own videos he doesn't appear to use one.

I hear ya. Discussion groups a pretty much for users to share ideas/ask questions etc. The logic lag problem has been an issue for quite some time now only get worse with the release of Mountain Lion. You'll notice that some of the posts are dated from a year ago. So.... I think it's obvious that Apple started "doing" something about this until people started calling. Supposedly they're working on a fix.

I'm having a similar problem; and it tends to happen more frequently when I have a quicktime movie open (for soundtrack editing) but have also left youtube open on Chrome. Maybe the quicktime movie and Chrome are unrelated and not causes of the problem, but I thought it might be worth sharing in-case other people have seen similar cases. (It could be I'm just running out of RAM--did a quick check and only have 44.9MB free RAM on an iMac w/ 8GB RAM.)

Another possible cause--and I'd be curious to hear what other people think--is if certain plug-ins might keep Logic from responding from clicks to the stop button. I have various 3rd party plugins open in the same project and because of the temporary hits to CPU, maybe that is a cause.
