Major UI Lag in Logic Pro 9.1.7 on OS 10.8?

Hi,

I've just completed my first session in Logic 9.1.7 on a Mac Pro Quad Xeon 2.6 after upgrading to Mountain Lion 10.8. I got through it, but experienced the following new bug (as compared to running in Lion 10.7.4:

I noticed that if Logic is currently playing when I double click on a plugin in the channel strip, and then try to stop the playback (keyboard or by clicking the transport in the arrange window), I will get from a 5-45 second lag before the app responds and actually stops. No mouse or keyboard commands seem to work while it's hanging up.

Workaround: Only open plugin windows when playback is stopped, and then playing and stopping works fine (although maybe a little more laggy than in the former OS still).

Is anyone else experiencing this or have any better workaround ideas?

installed 9.1.8. Things slightly improved but the problem still not sorted in my case...anybody else getting these symptoms?

Using dual monitors, if plug ins are shifted to 2nd monitor, 1st monitor is still slugish in response - (this does not happen in SL) I.e. if i move some parameters say on a channel eq which is on the 2nd monitor, if I then go to swap to a different track in the arrange, it does not allow this - moans for about 20 seconds and then catches up - this gets even slower if I start to open up 3rd party plugs/Kontact/Arturia etc

So SL it is for a long time to come I think...

Im testing this with a current project Im working on which has many different Logic plug ins and 3rd party...It works fine in SL with only the occasional cpu spike....I have not tested with just Logic plug ins yet, will have to start a new project, but in my case this would be irrelevent as I rely on 3rd party plugs....

If Logic's plugins have been updated to be compatible with the Mountain Lion (and Lion) changes, and your 3rd part plugins haven't gone through similar changes, maybe a new version of Logic won't help you much. I don't think the Logic software is capabale of controlling how redraws are made inside 'visually active' 3rd part plugins.

@zxc - yep, I think ur right - best thing i can try is to test a purely logic session, see how this reacts - if the problem remains, think im gonna have to completely wipe my main HD and do a clean install of all OS and apps - and see how this reacts - if the same, will have to wait for new OS update - who has the time to do all this, just want to write a track - not too much to ask is it!!! back to SL for a while...cheers.

Hi,

If the problems exist with 3rd part plugins only, and you can identify which manufacturers or 3rd part plugs that are causing the lag, why not just ask them if they are aware of the problem - and if there's a version which works fine with Mountain Lion coming up?

Well, I guess I should chime in since I started this thread. I had been using the "Show All Windows" from the dock icon trick whenever I lost focus/control all this time, but fortunately since I've been doing mostly podcast work (no music lately, darnit!), I was able to avoid using the EQ analyzer too much, so I basically avoided the problem (but not always).

I've run the 9.1.8 update and so far so good, but I've yet to do anything too major. It's great that the update seems to have fixed or severely lessened the problem for most of you. I'll hold judgement until I have a chance to get back to a remix I'm working on and really push some plugs.

Thanks to all for all the diag work and it's a drag that so many of you had to downgrade and reinstall, etc. - painful.

Thanks Apple for the update, but darn it if your communication in these instances, especially when dealing with professionals, wasn't 99% lacking. Just the slightest peep from you would save so much hassle and probably a bunch of customers who no doubt bounced from Logic in the past few months.

Cheers!

The Native Plugs are now working as expected, some third party too - some not.

If native stuff is all working and the problem is only third party, that may require updates from the third parties. If that's the case I hope Apple has been in touch with developers and given them advice about specifically what they need to update to fix it.

What happened to Logic? 3 months, no hot fix? I'm dissapointed to read the 9.1.8 list of improvements. I think they are great, but did Apple really make us wait for all those updates in 9.1.8 before releasing the most important fix of them all which was the debiliating lag we had? I been suffering this issue since June, maybe longer. I decided to start using Ableton again and its grown on me. Unfortunatly my co producers have been using Logic 8 so kinda need logic 9 to work. I havent installed the 9.1.8 yet and im sceptical it will even solve my problem.

Really not feeling confident about Logic or Apple anymore. 😟 Ableton 8.3 is rock *** solid.
