Major UI Lag in Logic Pro 9.1.7 on OS 10.8?

Hi,

I've just completed my first session in Logic 9.1.7 on a Mac Pro Quad Xeon 2.6 after upgrading to Mountain Lion 10.8. I got through it, but experienced the following new bug (as compared to running in Lion 10.7.4:

I noticed that if Logic is currently playing when I double click on a plugin in the channel strip, and then try to stop the playback (keyboard or by clicking the transport in the arrange window), I will get from a 5-45 second lag before the app responds and actually stops. No mouse or keyboard commands seem to work while it's hanging up.

Workaround: Only open plugin windows when playback is stopped, and then playing and stopping works fine (although maybe a little more laggy than in the former OS still).

Is anyone else experiencing this or have any better workaround ideas?

Mac Pro, Mac OS X (10.7), Quad 2.66GHz, 16GB, 18TB HD / RAID

Install 9.1.8

The problem was also experienced on Lion, but it seems like it got a lot worse going forwad. I can't speak for ML as I never got it, but if you are having lag issues I would get 9.1.8 NOW. It sortad out ALL my lagging and freezing under Lion.

Unless you have a Firewire Apogee Duet or Ensemble, then stick with 9.1.7, the Maestro software gets hosed with 9.1.8

tried many things to get rid of this UI lag ... and i've given up.

BUT, after uninstalling all iMovie, iPhoto, Garageband things a few weeks ago (which doesn't fix the issue) -

i re-installed garageband from the app store last night, because i needed some sounds for an older mainstage session.

Today i opened an extreme 'laggy' logic session ... and the problem is gone!

Watching this thread intently... I have an oldish iMac 2.0 Ghz dual core (intel) 4GB RAM running Logic Pro 9 32bit which I had on Leopard which would happy tick away with a Reason rewire project while scoring a 20 minute film with 20 or so tracks in each application. Recently, I am using a 2.0 Ghz i7 quad MBP 8GB RAM running the latest update in 64bit to score a 15 second clip running only 5 tracks (albeit with 4 instances of Alchemy) and no rewire and to my hairpulling misery I can barely keep at it without wanting to throw the machine across the room... I can't stop the project when I need to which is the main interruption to my work flow but even without the midi tracks, the video seems to cause the transport to be jittery and stop/starty (this is the technical term)... Also I'm getting a strange flaring when adjusting the EQ points on the stock channel EQ... other buggy affects are present.

I really thought/hoped that with an i7 quad I would be tearing up projects with ease but I'm worried I spent a ton of money on this MBP when I could have bought a PC and Cubase for half the money...

Serious fingers crossed for a reliable and complete fix in the very near future. I have seen re-install Garageband and use a midi keyboard transport control as workarounds, but I don't want workarounds, I want a solid fix to the expensive setup I have been using and upgrading for several years...

Mostly being facetious. I was just referring to how heavy and less efficient OSX has become, I think adding retina support to the graphics system has bogged things down as well as a huge host of background processes/services continuously running have made OSX and Pro-Apps less reliable. There have been many posting that ther're not able to run as may tracks or as reliable as a few years ago with a less powerful computer... I stuck with Snow Leopard ang Logic 9.1.3, it does everything I need, so what do I need to upgrade the OS or the software for, I'm off the upgrade wagon. No Leopard will not install, what did the machine ship with?

***!!!! AAAARARGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHH!!!!!

I breathed a huge sigh of relief when Apple finally acknowledged the UI lag and I loaded 9.1.8 to find it working fine.....

For ONE session, now I have the CPU meter CONSTANTLY full and jittery playback as well as all the other usual graphic lag.

I used to be a loyal fanboy but I'm beginning to lose patience with Apple now. iPad Mini my arse, I've sepnt thousands on Logic and Apple computers and I end up with no workflow at all. This is COSTING ME MONEY!!!

Pro support is not Apple focus. Considering that Logic is a highly complex applications with many-many processes and threads from many-many software vendors, which all have to be synchronized to get a clean audio output, it's obvious that it's more interesting to spend developer time on share holder value products, i.e consumer products. You may have heard that Apple investigates the possibillity to leave Intel behind, which could mean that progamms with extreme processor time consumption would cause problems, e.g. Logic. If Apple would have considered the Lag issue to be a huge problem, they would have solved it already. So - here we are with our unsolved problems - and time passes by. Bye-bye.

Well said Nusskappe.

Like others, I was so excited when the system update was finally released for the Logic Lag problem. But it hasn't fixed the issues. As I've stated before...just another band-aid. A very half-*** band-aid at that. If there were ever such a major issue with the iPad or iPhone it would have been worked on round the clock and solved ASAP.

I recently (and very reluctantly I might add) bought a new Mac Pro. Really wanted to finish out my home studio work station with a something more powerful, expandable and solid that my MacBook Pro. The simple fact that the Mac Pro line of computers seems to be dying a slow death made me extremely nervous. I don't think many would argue that the fact that the Mac Pro has been vurtually ignored for over TWO YEARS says it all. That said, I've been using Apple's Mac computers for over 15 years....so I was hopeful.

Bigger picture - this is a very strange time for folks like myself that have been die hard apple users, promoters and customers for so many years. The "creative professional industry" is what kept Apple growing to become what it is today. I feel the hard reality is that Apple no longer "needs" the Pro industry that kept it growing and thriving. With products like iPad's and iPhone's success, the Pro App market has become the drop in the bucket for Apple's bottom line profitability.

It's really bitter-sweet for me. I still fight it. I still boot Logic and begin working. Then Logic/OSX starts it's nonsense. I take a deep breath because I'm reminded things are changing. If something is important enough...it gets fixed...and fast. That's it really.

I hope I end up eating my own words. I hope 6 months from now Logic is flying like it used to. I hope the saying, "Good things come to those who wait" finally comes into play. I'd love all my suspicions to be flat out wrong. I really would.

Hind-sight is 20/20. But I can't help but imagining what my studio would be like now had I taken all that money and invested in a powerful PC and Pro Tools. (Just like everyone else I know)
