Major UI Lag in Logic Pro 9.1.7 on OS 10.8?

Hi,

I've just completed my first session in Logic 9.1.7 on a Mac Pro Quad Xeon 2.6 after upgrading to Mountain Lion 10.8. I got through it, but experienced the following new bug (as compared to running in Lion 10.7.4:

I noticed that if Logic is currently playing when I double click on a plugin in the channel strip, and then try to stop the playback (keyboard or by clicking the transport in the arrange window), I will get from a 5-45 second lag before the app responds and actually stops. No mouse or keyboard commands seem to work while it's hanging up.

Workaround: Only open plugin windows when playback is stopped, and then playing and stopping works fine (although maybe a little more laggy than in the former OS still).

Is anyone else experiencing this or have any better workaround ideas?

Mac Pro, Mac OS X (10.7), Quad 2.66GHz, 16GB, 18TB HD / RAID

ZXC, I have gone through all this many times with Apple tech. All these questions have been answered and it's been determined to be an Apple issue. At this point they aren't sure whether the problem is Logic or more a Core Audio ML issue, as other apps are being effected. Thanks for taking an interest. Believe me, it is an Apple issue, and you should consider yourself VERY VERY lucky not to be having it.

Well what a heated morning it's been on the Logic Lag forum! And for good reason.

My personal situation as of late: Similar to battlegimp - the symptoms have lessened greatly but still exist enough for me to consider this issue unresolved. Logic does OK on a 15 track project unless I want to open more than two plugins. Analogy: When open say an EQ, Compressor and Multi meter the animated graphic representation in the plugin window goes from a normal smooth 30 frames per second to a strobing 10 fps. Bottom line for this fact: If I'm trying to isolate and tweak an unwanted harsh crash cymbal in a drum track, I have to close every other (only 2) plugin windows so the EQ will smoothly and accurately give me a visual representation of where that sound is located in the frequency range.

For ANY DAW to choke on such a simple everyday task is just flat out amateur where Pro Apps are concerned. This has been a problem WAY too long to be just written off as, "tipical sofware/system upgrade woes". I look at it from a different perspective: If Pro Tools or Ableton or Sonar became burdened with such a critical problem...it would be fixed. Fast. Period. Their compay's future literally depends on their product "working" as it should. Apple's profitability and future is in no way linked to how well or poor Logic Pro functions today in 2012. Period.

At this stage I personally don't care if others don't have the problem. Good for you, have a cookie....that gives me no relief. Two months ago I bought a brand new Mac Pro with 32GB Ram, Three 2TB hard drives blah, blah, blah. After a total fo 5.5 hours on the phone with Logic tech support and many, many more hours of trial and error fixes I was still at sqaure one. I finally wiped the computer completely. Reinstalled OSX. I Reinstalling Logic again from scratch...disk by disk. No 3rd party plugins. Even fresh download of the additional content. Nothing changed. I've stopped sending weekly questions, updates and emails to Logic's tech team. **** it. 6 months of that is quite enough. I can't care more about an application working correctly than the creators of that app. To do so further would make me....an idiot.

I met with that audio engineer friend mentioned in an earlier post. 15+ year Pro Tools user and Studio Owner.

- Pro Tools has a great Pro support team.

- There's nothing Logic does that Pro Tools can't.

- It's expensive but you get what you pay for.

- I've downloaded the the trial version of PT 10. It's smooth, clean and very responsive so far. Created a 30 track project. Perposefully loaded up each track with many unessessary plugins. PT cruises along just fine.

I repeat....cruises along just fine.

For the first time since this began many many months ago.... I finally felt peace-of-mind for a moment. Exhale. I had to laugh at myself because it was almost pathetic of me to get so excited by an application that is just working like it should.

Maybe Logic/Apple will get thier **** together. Maybe not. Don't care. Doesn't matter at the moment. There are other solutions just waiting for me to get fed up enough to make the leap.

I think somebody has a personal contract to wind us up. 😉 Anyway, I can't agree with you more MadDog. And I'm looking into Pro Tools myself. Despite these issues I really love Logic and the transition will be a difficult one but as Nusskappe suggested... the problem could stem with OSX and Apple. Therefore it does make a lot of sense to master a DAW that is not Apple-dependent. I've been an Apple-only user my whole life. I can count on two hands the number of minutes I've spent using a PC, literally. But the writing is on the wall. I'm hoping these are just rumors, but the idea of Apple transitioning away from Intel is a horror to me. Here's hoping Apple hires a staff and feeds them enough money to take good care of their pro users and pro apps.

Yep Fredo, I admit it. Rotten Apple fan boy...that's me. 20 years on a Mac. From my very first real job til now.

I get irritated when I'm doing a tutorial and the guy says, "So now if you command click or control click on PC"! LOL. Have spent a total of 20 minutes on a PC my entire life. (Hated every minute of it.) LOL x2

Sorry for posting WAY off topic. I wont' do it again. Hopefully.

If Apple does decide to leave Intel that should put the nail in the coffin regarding Logic. How long would it take 3rd party developers to transition? Why would developers try with so much competition and alternatives to Logic? Is apple ready to release a new DAW that says you empirically need this over everyone else and behooves all 3rd party developers to update plugins ASAP? I don’t think so.

Kind of humorous..

On a 22-track 44.1/24-bit project running my on my old PPC dual processor G5/Leopard 10.5.8 (since relegated to the back room). I can open as many as 5 channel EQs with analyzer in hi-rez mode before dragging an EQ window starts to lag, however, the program (Logic 9.02) itself never lags or becomes unresponsive. Quite a few effects plugins running as well as an instance of Space Designer.

I know and you are right - this was just a comment for users who plan to drop Logic and work with 3rd party solutions on the OSX platform. Due to Apples zero information policy those users could run into an upgrade trap.

I dropped ML 4 weeks ago. It's fine with SL but one day it could be neccesary for other reasons than Logic lag issues to upgrade to a Mighty Lion version. Noone knows but Apple and perhaps they do not know it either.
