Major UI Lag in Logic Pro 9.1.7 on OS 10.8?

Hi,

I've just completed my first session in Logic 9.1.7 on a Mac Pro Quad Xeon 2.6 after upgrading to Mountain Lion 10.8. I got through it, but experienced the following new bug (as compared to running in Lion 10.7.4:

I noticed that if Logic is currently playing when I double click on a plugin in the channel strip, and then try to stop the playback (keyboard or by clicking the transport in the arrange window), I will get from a 5-45 second lag before the app responds and actually stops. No mouse or keyboard commands seem to work while it's hanging up.

Workaround: Only open plugin windows when playback is stopped, and then playing and stopping works fine (although maybe a little more laggy than in the former OS still).

Is anyone else experiencing this or have any better workaround ideas?

Mac Pro, Mac OS X (10.7), Quad 2.66GHz, 16GB, 18TB HD / RAID

Kind of humorous..

On a 22-track 44.1/24-bit project running my on my old PPC dual processor G5/Leopard 10.5.8 (since relegated to the back room). I can open as many as 5 channel EQs with analyzer in hi-rez mode before dragging an EQ window starts to lag, however, the program (Logic 9.02) itself never lags or becomes unresponsive. Quite a few effects plugins running as well as an instance of Space Designer.

Also in my radio systems with L8 + Tiger are rocksolid, but we are talking about another thing.

I paid for a software that doesn't allow me to work I'm not talking about logic itself, but Lion & Mountain Lion you know why?

Because on SL it works good but as more time goes by, plugin developers are putting the minimum requirement of 10.6.8 to install third party plugins you know what's next.. Lion as minimum req.

Live 9 Due out, Cubase 7 and nuendo 6 due....surely Logic X cant be far behind...to apples shame if its not out soon....and it better sh*t over the feature rich capabililities of Cubase these days....after 20 years seriously thinking of jumping to Nuendo and NEK....individual note modulations/melodyne like editing etc....features puts logic to shame....

ZXC, I have gone through all this many times with Apple tech. All these questions have been answered and it's been determined to be an Apple issue.

Some Logic users have gotten rid of the problem by removing non-Apple drivers etc., or only have it with visually active plugins from 3rd part manufacturers, by replacing some of of their RAM etc.

I have, on several occasions, received wrong explanations re. why I have a problem with a product from from the support team of the company which makes that product. So - if you really want to get rid of the problem, I'd check the solutions which have resolved the issues for others - whatever the Apple support team says.

Does someone in this community have an agreement with Apple to calm down frustrated users?

I doubt it - but obviously a number of users have an agreement with themselves about coming back and post about how good other DAWs are - including pople who don't use Logic anymore, launch theories about "GarageBand Pro", Logic being "doomed" etc., + at least give the impression that the latest Logic-bugfix versions doesn't solve anything for anyone. :-) Some of them also assume thatbecause Apple also sell phones, everybody in Apple now work on phones only.

Based on contact with a lot of Logic users, my feeling is that eg. this thread from another site gives a more accurate impression of how widespread the lag issue is:

What's the difference, you don't belong to this forum anymore, at least under the ZXC name and only come here to "set the record straight", when in reality, you sound just like the people you're complaining about. You are exactly the same and in fact draw more attention to their complaints. Six of one, half a dozen of the other.

As you can see in various threads on this and other forums, a numbers of users (incluing myself) have gotten rid of the lag problem - even before the last Logic update - by sorting out/removing/updating 3rd part stuff. That's why I try to help eg. Fredo to find out if his problem also could be caused by 3rd part stuff - in spite of what some Apple rep has told him.

I'm not saying that the lag problem - for those who still have it - is only caused by 3rd part causes.

"set the record straight"

Well, let me try that, then. ;-) Fredo, if you have bought an Apple computer + Apple software and that combo doesn't work, and they tell you that the reason it doesn't work is that it's Apple's fault and Apple can figure out what the problem actually is or fix it for you, you should contact them and cancel the purchase. I have done that in the past myself.

If you're not interested in that or for some reason can't do that, you of course either need to wait for a fix, use another DAW until this is fixed, or try some possible solutions even if Apple support guys have told you that they don't exist.

At least three people in the thread I linked to have mentioned problems with 3rd part software. Most people who posted something about the last update posted something positive.

Well said Pancenter.

Gotta love self appointed mediators that enjoy crossing that fine line of expressing personal opinion to making it their personal mission to herd the misguided flock. Its a discussion forum. Created just for that. Praise, complaint and everything in between. If you don't personally "like" what's being posted...go away. Start another thread - not another user name. But by all means keep the turd polishing "look on the bright side guys" at the door. OR one chould notify their supervisor at Apple that the Discussion Group Mole Project isn't working to turn the tides for Logic's diminishing reputation.

If Apple hadn't dropped the ball in this major FAIL this discussion group wouldn't exists. Nor other links to other discussion groups about the same problem. Period.

This is not relevant for me since LA performed well under SL with all my plugins (Waves, Melodyne, Pianoteq, Guitar Rig, .. and many others) . If Apple has changed their interfaces from OSX Lion and further, they should have informed 3rd party vendors.

I faced the problem for the first time during MIDI editing, which has nothing to do with 3rd party plugins (all my 3rd party GUIs were closed). Apple cant expect their customers to carry out time consuming analysis to find a work-around for a problem which occured after upgrading OSX. It's their job, they get paid for this.

In am glad for your three people you ar linked to, but what about all others who cant work around the problem? For me it's not an argument that some users perhaps managed to get rid of the problem. It would be an argument if these users would inform Apple how and Apple would publish the workaround or even better to fix the problem. So far I cannot recognize that they care about this dreadful bug.

To put things in perspective:

I've been a Mac User...Apple IIc. Jesus!

My first copy of Logic came out of the truck (hot enough) just arriving for the first time at N.Y.

About 3 or 4 years ago I got banned, without the right to express my opinions, in these forums because on my wish list for Logic I put:

1- A new developer team!!!

And don't tell me Logic is fantastic compare with others, blah blah...THAT'S NOT THE POINT! It is good!

The point is I saw what the original team did to Logic (Gerhard Lengeling and Co.) in the 4 following years after I bought it!

It was simply put: AMAZING! As amazing WAS APPLE!

I dont wan't SUPPORT. If I need frequent support it is because something is wrong.

I didn't call support for years with Apple, that was probably my main reason to stick to the company!

We need DEVELOPERS that really HEAR and PAY ATTENTION TO CUSTOMERS!!!!!

And COMMITTED and SPECIALIZED in this case TO MUSIC!!!

We, as users, give you our experience and ideas for free! Which seems not to be the case the other way around...It's ok, as long as we feel we, together, r getting somewhere...

...and a bit of CREATIVITY too! (Bless you, Mr. Steve for sharing that fantastic mind with the rest of us, for being in the same boat as us).

Here we are years after Logic being bought by Apple: people constantly thinking about switching. But not to Mac as it used to be...

Sad!

It's a shame what Logic is compared to what coud've been...!!!

Now you can ban me again!

Just a quick update, folks. I had a very lengthy and totally (and refreshingly) honest conversation with the Senior Product Manager of Logic Pro and came away very encouraged. He told me that, first of all, they are trying very hard to fix this problem, but that unfortunately it's just not easily reproduced. They DO take it seriously and had figured that the .8 update fixed it, and were very disappointed to get feedback that it hadn't been fixed for all users. They are still prioritizing fixing it. So we may have to be patient, but it will be fixed.

It's all to with multiple desktops and mission control...I could see what was going, nothing is crashing but your mouse is losing foucs...i was clicking on some thing outside logic which regain it's focus...

SOLUTION! AND IT WORKS! ME A HUMBLE DUDE FROM LONDON FOUND IT! worked it out myself...thanks apple yeah would like a nice new macbook for my services.

System preferences -> Mission control -> Uncheck all the boxes and remove the hot corners, also make sure none of your shortcuts conflict with your logic one....*edit* turn them all off the sort cuts for mission control

I also turned off all the Notificationsin that right hand bar...not sure if that makes a different..I could be bothered do any trial and error..

So apple there's the problem now kindly fix it although me personally I not got to these featurs...

PLEASE test this, if it works for you please share and name check me Nick 235...I have not seen this anywhere else or read it from site...was just using a bit of LOGIC !!!!!
