Major UI Lag in Logic Pro 9.1.7 on OS 10.8?

Hi,

I've just completed my first session in Logic 9.1.7 on a Mac Pro Quad Xeon 2.6 after upgrading to Mountain Lion 10.8. I got through it, but experienced the following new bug (as compared to running in Lion 10.7.4:

I noticed that if Logic is currently playing when I double click on a plugin in the channel strip, and then try to stop the playback (keyboard or by clicking the transport in the arrange window), I will get from a 5-45 second lag before the app responds and actually stops. No mouse or keyboard commands seem to work while it's hanging up.

Workaround: Only open plugin windows when playback is stopped, and then playing and stopping works fine (although maybe a little more laggy than in the former OS still).

Is anyone else experiencing this or have any better workaround ideas?

Mac Pro, Mac OS X (10.7), Quad 2.66GHz, 16GB, 18TB HD / RAID

I've only just run into the problem today and found this forum tonight. I have already submitted onlline feedback but, yes, rest assured I shall call them in business hours also.

My post wasn't really aimed it you, sorry if it seemed that way, more of a call to arms.

What will likely happen is, you'll get somone who says this has never been reported and/or we can't replicate the problem send us a file... then if the Apple Gods smile on you you will be bumped up a level past the tech-support minions and be able to speak with someone who will at least say we're working on it. However, your call will be logged as an inquiry, the more the better.

You know what this means..... Either Logic wasn't even tested with ML or if it was, someone loaded it in and said: ok, yeah... it boots up... next!

Not good.

Or they're having trouble reproducing the issue. I was able to get it to lag under 10.7.4 but 10.8 seems to have made it go away for me. If you get a response from Apple, definitely send them a Logic session so they can see exactly what causes it.

Exactly. Does anybody really imagine that nobody ever ran Logic under ML? I've worked as a beta-tester for audio software, and even during the most thorough testing, stuff gets by. The fact that not every user is having these problems (mine is running perfectly as long as I don't try to connect the Mackie control emulaton in my Tascam console) indicates that its not a consistent bug but something that happens on a given system under a given set of circumstances.

Yes I'm experiencing major UI lag as well. Very frustrating.

Problem Description:

During playback or recording, Logic gets "stuck" in playback mode and stops responding to commands. Pressing stop, trying to change parameters or adjust plugins, nothing works. After a long (seconds to minutes) lag, Logic will "catch up" to commands entered while it was frozen. Often have to resort to Force Quitting.

A few notes:

  • -happens during playback or recording
  • -happens when Logic is set in Cycle (i.e. loop) mode
  • -using MIDI keyboard
  • -noticed a few times it happened that system was low on available RAM
  • -when Force Quitting, it doesn't generate a crash report

System Specs:

  • -MacBook Pro 15" (2010)
  • -Core i7 @ 2.66 GHz
  • -OS X 10.8

To summarize a bit the problem, and keep a trace (video)

Logic Pro 9.1.7 (disc install)

Mountain Lion 10.8.0 (clean install)

No 3rd party software (just a mouse driver, razer icon in my menubar - it doesn't cause any issue to the system/Logic)

No 3rd party plugins

No audio drivers...

Pure clean stuff like out from the Apple Store

Mac Pro 2009

The lag is SO OBVIOUS to see !

I was having pretty much every problem stated in this post. After considering logic almost useless, i decided to see if there was an updated driver for my audio interface. Sure enough my RME FIREFACE UCX had an updated driver not a week old, and oddly enough solved all my ML problems, so im back at it! Maybe this works for some of you? Good luck!

hey I just wanted to give you guys a quick heads up on what I discovered.

My setup - 2.66quad core Mac Pro w/ 8gb ram. logic 9.1.7 and ML.

I skipped Lion entirely and went directly to ML.

I was pretty upset to learn that i had the input lag issue - however, i work around it due to the fact that no lag exists when using the Novation USB remotezeroSL. I'm able to stop and start easily - when the keyboard input is all tied up.

What I noticed today when the automap server quit was that once the USB controller was offline, there was ZERO keyboard input lag apparent.

Obviously, its nice to use BOTH KB and a controller - but i wanted to share this with other affected users (and apple if they care) to see if that can help others devise workarounds or ultimately - a solution.

Cheers!
