Major UI Lag in Logic Pro 9.1.7 on OS 10.8?

There is definitely still a problem with 10.8.3 and Logic 9.1.8 in 64 bit mode. I run this combo on a Mac Pro 8-core and still find the same level of lag. Nice fix, Apple...

I did read through carefully, AofS, and I'm not sure why you are taking a role of authority here. I have somebody at Apple who is going to be calling me to go through this with a fine tooth comb a-f'ing-gain. I am speaking from my own first hand experience (not from what people have reported to me - you aren't actually encountering this problem, right? So why are you commenting so much?) My frustration has been growing for 8 months now as I've gone through hours and hours and hours of painstaking tech support and trials.

Hey, we're users just like you that's all this forum is, users. There's no one from Apple here. (although I'm pretty sure there is but they can't speak as an Apple representative without losing their gig)

This entire thing is just a huge crock of S#!+. It's almost laughable. All these posts, try 64 bit, go back to 32 bit, back to Snow Leopard, trash Logic then reinstall, Quad core, Eight core, MacBook Pro, New Mac, Old Mac, Update the system BUT use the combo, stand on your head - facing north - at sunrise - waving a chicken bone, etc. etc. etc. What a joke.

How bout this: Boot your computer, launch the DAW...ready for work.

Like ProTools or Ableton Live? Yeah, like those.

Except, of course, both PT and Live have problems of their own that have gone unresolved for a long time now....

Such as the PDC issue in Live or the problem with 'early Midi' in both the last two major versions of PT... and my personal long standing nightmare in Live that it will not retain Audio Interface settings across a restart on certain Mac configurations......(Which Ableton have finally confirmed as a long standing bug and hopefully will be fixed in the next update)

A year ago, when this 'Lag' problem started to affect a larger group of people than previously (It was originally reported way back in the SL days by a couple of people..) I had 17 clients who stated they had this issue. As of today, none of those clients have the problem any longer (Thank goodness!) .. and almost for each one, it has been caused by something that required a different solution that has fixed the issue. These causes have ranged from cracked/out of date plugins to a corrupted Video driver in one case.. to corrupt/faulty delta updates to OS X and/or other apps... (The hardest ones to identify for sure) The final client who had this issue and for whom nothing I tried would fix it, has reported that a completely clean install of 10.8.3 and 9.1.8 successfully fixed the problem for him....

In every case bar the last one, installing OS X on an ext drive along with just the basic Logic installation and nothing else, proved the most sucessful way to troubleshoot.. and in every case resiolved the issue. .. so then it was a matter of working out what was going on with their own OS X installation,in comparison to the 'clean ext installation.. that was the root cause of their problems and by a process of elimination with each one, the source of the problem was found. .. and corrected.

Here, I am simply offering help to those who have this issue, by relating these fixes, one by one as I came across them in the hope that one of them might help someone here resolve their issue. Frankly I certainly don't care if someone 'threatens' to switch to another DAW and so on..I'm simply taking an hour or so a day out of my time.. to offer help.. because it doesn't seem like they are likely to get help from Apple directly on this matter... and as others here, such as Erik, Pancenter, CCT, Ski, Jim F and DSS to name but a few.... have helped me in the past.. I am simply doing my best to 'pass it forward'...

One further observation I will make (and this is bound to be unpopular but anyhow.........)

..is that has anyone else noticed how the top rated users here (and elsewhere on the other Logic related forums) either never had the problem... (The most common reason) or apparently know how to fix/avoid/work around it successfully...

Anyhow.... take this advice or leave it.. but as been said here repeatedly in the past, there is little point whining and complaining here to Apple, because this is the wrong place to do so and isn't really going to get you anywhere... If you want to be heard then contact Apple directly (I find a mix of phone calls and emails using the same Case ID number they issue you...in every form of communication..are actually the most effective methods!) and keep on doing so.. over and over again until you get a resolution.... or failing that, switch to a different DAW... (and not just threaten to do so)

for 20+ working hours in logic with 10.8.3., no lag was found.

however, I am using 9.1.5 coz PLAY3 won't let work in 9.1.8. 😕

Me running in 64 bit mode. Finally, the lag is gone. There's some milliseconds "lag" from the time a button is pressed, to action, but on my system now, this lag or a bit "late response" (SL was slightly quicker) seems to be CONSTANT. I'll definately get used to it. Not actually a problem.

Conclusion: this time the update fixed the lag problem here... Oh, what a hard period of waiting...

It's sad that the lag is still there for some or many. My absolutely best advice: roll back to Snow Leopard if your mac can run it. Why would we need Mountain Lion, actually? :/

Anyway... Agree with people in here, this fix has taken way too long... It's sad. Because Logic Pro is the absolute best DAW in my opinion, as a musician. The look, feel, the whole thing - how it just works and how easy I get things done... I can't tell how my life actually changed to better when I some years ago gave up PC and went to Logic/mac. Strange actually :-)

Wether you are a retailer that behaves as a composer sometimes or the opposite!

(sm) Art, if I where your client and you try to sell me a computer explaining all above I would probably change career as a minimum, probably a pizzeria would be better...

As Fredo, I've no interest and no time to waste in fixing software or computers (too many things to learn about music...). I'm trying to compose with them.

The Logic system requirements doesn't mentioned any of the things you should be aware of you are talking about... Nor have I seen any apple Official release of how to configure and optimize Logic for its use.

What Logic do have is something called AU Manager which is supposed to deal with plugins.

Furthermore, the amount of AU plug ins out there is big but not big enough for a serious company to test them deeply before any release.

As for PT or other software what I can say is that I expect Logic being and APPLE Product to run without much less problems than the others using its OS, and I'm afraid that's not the case...

Talking about your experience mirroring HD to solve problems in equal systems what I can say is:

Those systems can't be equal!!! Otherwise they would install identically if as how you said you are doing that from scratch. Binary systems are not temperamental, they are 0s and 1s.

Probably when you are mirroring software the hardware is tolerating other drivers to run.

Could be anything, but probably related to hardware if your thesis is true. A video card, DVD, RAM, audio card, etc...

So some of the programming is not adequate for that difference...

As for the problem there seems to be a conflict between audio and visuals when using some windows.

Many users are having stutter issues when opening QT or VLC. Logic hangs up...That's what they've tried to solve with this upgrade. EA Games warns of some games issues due to a certain NVidia chip problem in some MAC. QUAKE for example won't run...

Symptoms: MEMORY PROBLEMS (Clog up), AUDIO STUTTER, LOGIC'S LAG, and the most scary Logic Board being blown up due to the video card toasting it...

If this would be the case (which I'm not saying it is), it would be a difficult to accept nightmare for APPLE.
