So I used the iMessage beta on my Mac when it was running Lion and it worked great . After upgrading to Mountain Lion iMessage will not send photos. It sends text just fine but photos do not get sent.

I've had this issue as well! The photos or video I try to send in iMessages just sit there.

Also, when someone sends me a photo or video, it goes to my phone, but not to my computer.  Both send just fine to AIM or Gchat, but not iMessages.

    The Beta worked perfectly!

If you open the 'File Transfers' window in Messages, you can see all the photos and videos just stacked up with the ever moving progress bar saying something like "preparing" but nothing happens.

    Any ideas?

I re-downloaded, and re-installed Mountain Lion and now everything works how it should. Took another hour or so, but at least it works!  Let me know if this works for you.

    HI,

I have seen that when the iMessages server are busy some "Services" seem to get dropped and syncing plain messages can also be delayed.

    I would try later.

It stopped working yesterday again.  Pictures only come through, or can be sent from my phone. Not my computer.

After I reinstalled, it worked fine sending and recieving up until last night when neither happens.  If I open up the 'transfers' box in Messages, I can see all the photo files in there with a constantly swirling blue line saying 'preparing', but nothing ever happens.

    Hi,

There should be a downward arrow next to  each item

If you use this does it make any Progress ?  (It may move on to "Failed")

This just started for me today.  And, interestingly, it's happening simultaneously on my iMac and my MacBook Pro.  Frustrating.  BTW, it was working fine in ML until today.

It does not progress any after clicking the downward arrow.

Also when trying to send a photo in an iMessage, it shows up in the box, but never goes to 'Delivered' and in the Transfers box it just says "Sent ZERO of (number)bytes"

    Hi,

From Messages on the Mac to my iPhone Number with a .psd 90.5Mb file (pic)

The Pic moves into the Chat part but says nothing.

The File Transfers Window does say "Sent Zero ..."

It does not indicate progress but then it says Sent  and the Chat window Displays "Delivered."

However I am "waiting" for Multiple items to go through even though the amount involved is smaller.

    EDIT.

    They eventualy arrived.

The Time Difference between the Send time in Messages and the Arrive time on the phone says only two minutes but it felt much longer.

It was most of the time I was typiing this.

same problem here. since 3 or 4 days, imsg on ML neither sends nor receives images anymore! sending shows "zero bytes", receiving shows looping progress bar. changing the imsg download folder, proxy settings etc did not help at all...

    Hi,

I've been with the same problem for a couple of days, until finally today Messages simply stopped showing even a the window, so absolute inability to use it.

Considering that reinstalling the operating system is NOT a solution, I searched for something myself.

Pictures are controlled by xpcd, imagent and Messages, and it seems that when the problem arises is because they're using the wrong Apple server.

While this may be solved by Apple in a update (I hope so), in the meantime you can do a workaround (it worked for me on two different machines, and even days old images appeared).

In your Library, there is a folder called Preferences (that is /Users/<your_username>/Library/Preferences). There you should delete com.apple.imagent.plist com.apple.imservice.iMessage.plist and com.apple.imessage.bag.plist, with Messages CLOSED. Then reboot so Messages creates new ones. Also delete all file starting with com.apple.imagent, com.apple.imservice, com.apple.imessage and com.apple.iChat that end in .lock.

If even then it still is not working, deleting all files starting with com.apple.imagent, com.apple.imservice, com.apple.imessage and com.apple.iChat 100% for sure. But when you reboot you'll find you need to input again your login data for iMessage, FaceTime, Yahoo chat, AIM chat, Google Talk and Jabber (if you used them on Messages/iChat).

This is an annoyance, but less than a whole operating system reinstall or losing the functionality.

After all of this is done you should regain the ability to receive photos, send photos and drag&drop photos.

Many thanks for the great solutiuon.

It's much more faster then installing the whole OS X system from scratch.
