black screen after login, Mountain Lion on Macbook Retina

I've been using Mountain Lion for a while, and regularly I get a black screen, right after the login screen (after entering the password).

Often I have to reboot several times until it boots properly.

It is not clear when or why it happens: it could be some 3rd party code (gfxCardStatus, CUDA 5.0 sdk, steer mouse, Microsoft Intellimouse driver?) or something else.

Does anyone else have a similar issue?

IMHO, this BSOD issue seems to be software related as my rMBP also shipped with Lion. Back then, I did not face this problem. Sometime back i suggested to toggle auto-login and till date still serves me well as a stable work around. I hope apple will formally addresses this problem with a patch.

Also, for the record, i believe many of us have been contacted by apple support (myself included) and i'm happy with the attention paid to this issue. I've been an apple user for at least a decade now and sure there are hick ups along the way but the user experience offered by OSX still far out performs most windows driven platforms 🙂

It's a shame, however, the machine's are second to non other than teething issues 😉 you chose wisely

Last time I posted was on about page two, and here's why...

My rMBP has stopped back screening alltogether. Seemingly through no combination of my original attempts to remedy it.

I am still running GFXCardStatus, still have autologin disabled and auto graphics switching on and running at the non native 1680x1050 mode, all things that people have suggested may cause the problem.

One thing that may have had an effect (and seems to have been successful for some others) was the disabling auto graphics switching in safe mode then re-enabling on reboot drill.

I just wanted to say that in case people are limiting the programs they run or running begrudgingly in 'best for retina' etc. these things dont seem to be causing the issue on my machine, which has stopped BSODing

However, I wish everyone here luck, Apple seems to be on the case, they rang me up as well after my bug report.

You know, i have had the issue for a while. I got a call from Apple, however, I have not had the issue in some time. Personally, i cant afford to have my laptop autologin, so that was never an option.

The only real thing i did is mess with the graphics switching. Following someone elses suggestion, i shut my machine down; rebooted holding the shift to get safe mode. Turned ON automatic graphics switching. Rebooted. Then turned it back off and rebooted again.

Its back at the same setting i had, but after doing that, it doesnt black screen on my anymore.. for now. (Note: auto graphics switching is under the SETTINGS | ENERGY SAVER).

I personally dont like that setting on anyway; though it give better battery, i can notice the performance difference.

Glad that worked. (so far) I know once i changed that setting in safe mode, it seemed to 'reset' the settings perhaps properly and no more BSOD.

Anyway, my permanent setting is using auto switching = off. Sebastian, is your permanent setting (the setting you are going to stay with) leaving the auto switching off or on? it would be interesting to find out if the setting must be off, or if the setting must just be reset in safe mode to either setting to fix this issue.
