black screen after login, Mountain Lion on Macbook Retina

I've been using Mountain Lion for a while, and regularly I get a black screen, right after the login screen (after entering the password).

Often I have to reboot several times until it boots properly.

It is not clear when or why it happens: it could be some 3rd party code (gfxCardStatus, CUDA 5.0 sdk, steer mouse, Microsoft Intellimouse driver?) or something else.

Does anyone else have a similar issue?

Same thing for me. I haven't rebooted my system for a few days. But when I tried to replicate the issue during Apple's phone call to me today, I was unable to do so. All resolutions seem to work fine now and I have never enabled auto-login. Now I'm not quite sure what I did in between that fixed it! 😕 Hopefully I won't have further issues down the road.

It's nice to see Apple reaching out to users here to try to rectify the issue.

I just received my third replacement rMBP (this one had mountain lion, the other two had lion and did not have the issue) and have this issue. I was forced to restart due to a software update and got the BSOD. I'm not sure if the update caused it or the issue was always there and this just happened to be my first restart (I'm thinking the latter). Definitely seems like a software issue. I was able to login by booting up and instead of logging in clicking sleep then unsleeping and logging in.

I have had my Retina MBP for about a week and a half. Installed Mountain Lion immediately after getting it home. I'm also getting the "black screen" but in my case it's happening during the boot process. Not even getting to the login screen. Didn't seem to have the problem until after a couple of the subsequent pathces (firmware updates) to Mountain Lion.

In my case, I'm almost thinking about just returning the thing. Don't seem to be having any of these issue with my 17" MBP (also running Mountain Lion).

I've just found something new...

A new sort of BSOD, out of sleep just after the opening of the MBPr. But no answer from the keyboard this time and the mouse was over the black screen.

Rather than shut it down, I've tried to close and reopen it, first with the charger on and then without the charger. The last solution worked.

In fact, the charger activate the switch between the two graphic mode. Without, I use the integrated graphic card.

Therefore we could say the problem is between the auto switch or the dedicated graphic card.

I have my MBPR for three weeks and I've never had this issue ever with both Lion and ML. But now something weird happened. Xcode couldn't open the Simulator and the icon was just jumpin up and down. I couldn't change the graphic card with gfxCardStatus app manually to Nvidia. When I hit the Discrete Only it was just show i again as an integreted graphic or Intel.

I exit from gfxCardStatus and close the lid and when I opened it there it is blank black screen and couldn't do anything except holding power button.

I didn't do anything to say that caused the problem. Same thing that I do everyday.

I don't know what to do.

UPDATE: I'm on Best for Retina scale if it helps.

Exactly the same issue as Maziyar, in some rare cases when I launch Adobe Illustrator the icon is just jumping, the app does not launch, and when it happens it becomes impossible to manually change the graphic card to Nvidia with gfxCardStatus. The graphic card sticks with Intel.

In that state the whole system becomes instable, and if I put the Mac to sleep by closing it, I get a black screen after opening it.

Something must be broken with the graphic cards switch.

This should come as no surprise to anyone but here I go....

I had been reporting here that I was experiencing the blackout bootup problems on my Retina Macbook Pro.

Apple has just sent me a replacement RMBP.

After doing a migration and setting the resolution just below "Best For Retina" the problem resurfaced.

So, we know that exchanging your RMBP is not going to solve the problem.

The good news is, as all of you are aware, that Apple is aware of this problem. I have speaking with one of their leading executives and I have been assured that the engineers are continuing to investigate this issue.

Interesting ... I also questioning myself about the possibility that gfxCardStatus could be part of the problem.

I no longer have the black screen anymore but I still have the problem which happen when you can't switch manually between the two cards.

I haven't try to lunch Illustrator for the moment ...

EDIT: Ok, I've just tried something.

My gfxCardStatus is set to integrated graphic card when he is on battery, but I've noticed that it is actually on automatic switching when the macbook is on battery.

So, it doesn't do what I ask it to do. But, in safe mode I set the macbook to be on automatic graphic switching.

I assume there is a conflict between gfcCardStatus and the Macbook settings in Safe Mode.

Therefore I'll try to work without gfxCardStatus for the moment.
