black screen after login, Mountain Lion on Macbook Retina

I've been using Mountain Lion for a while, and regularly I get a black screen, right after the login screen (after entering the password).

Often I have to reboot several times until it boots properly.

It is not clear when or why it happens: it could be some 3rd party code (gfxCardStatus, CUDA 5.0 sdk, steer mouse, Microsoft Intellimouse driver?) or something else.

Does anyone else have a similar issue?

Can anyone else confirm that we can now (after updating to 10.8.1) turn off auto-login and resume using our chosen resolutions (other than the Best for Retina default) and log in manually without experiencing the BSOD?

As soon as I get home, I'll update and try it like a madman, rebooting a couple of times a day and see if it appears to be consistently good, but I was thinking the more people try it and see if they experience the BSOD after login problem again, the sooner we know whether or not this update fixes. Apple has not written about this problem having been solves with the update, then again they never officially acknowleged this fault either.

Great... so this means that I'll have to use 'Best for this Display' when I return to university?

Right now I can afford to just turn off auto-login and keep my 1650x1060 resolution that I prefer over the 1440x900 default option, but if I was to turn auto-login off and kept that resolution, the BSOD on login problem would return, right?

So I'd have to change the resolution to 1440x900 in order to not experience the BSOD on login and be able to always use the manual log in mode.

I wanted to quickly step in here and give all of you some optimistic news...

I have been speaking with an Apple executive who has been working with their Engineers on this problem.

Some of you in this thread have been also contacted, I am certain.

The latest word I received is that there is a fix. Some may be offered, very shortly, the opportunity to test the software fix. However, if that is not the case, it will appear in a software update.

It is my understanding the the Engineers have isolated the problem and a fix is imminent.

Same black screen after login issues here with retina MBP, 10.8.1 hasn't fixed or changed the issue. I think I seem to experience the problem more often if I've left the "reopen windows when logging back in" checked when rebooting, I am bootcamping between OSX and Win7 quite a lot at the moment, but it's difficult to gauge as I get the black screen when not reopening windows as well.

I am now going to change my login options to automatic logon to see if that makes a difference as seems to have been suggested as a potential workaround.

Fingers crossed that there is a fix in the pipeline, the boot speed of the rMBP is astonishing but this black screen is making me a sad panda.
