black screen after login, Mountain Lion on Macbook Retina

I've been using Mountain Lion for a while, and regularly I get a black screen, right after the login screen (after entering the password).

Often I have to reboot several times until it boots properly.

It is not clear when or why it happens: it could be some 3rd party code (gfxCardStatus, CUDA 5.0 sdk, steer mouse, Microsoft Intellimouse driver?) or something else.

Does anyone else have a similar issue?

Any of the two work independently. Anybody who reads the whole thread will see that easily 😉

I use the "Best for Retina" option without autologin. So far five days without BSOD. I sometimes switch to other resolutions but I always switch back to"Best for Retina" before shutting down.

I just wanted to tell him to do both instead of giving many explanations as he obviously does not have much time to read posts.

Only I use this Macbook but before I found a workaround you can imagine that I tried many things (like using a different user, so I created one).

You could try to create another one and then restart with the "Best for Retina" option just for testing purposes or for the fun of it. Maybe that is the real difference.

Anyway until they deliver a proper solution I will keep my second unused user where it is just in case 😉

I haven't done a thorough test yet, but so far after several tries I have found that whenever I reboot with a non-"Best for Retina" display resolution, I will get a black screen after login. I would have to do a manual reboot several times before I can get the display back. No automatic login was used. However, while on "Best for Retina", I don't have any issues at all.

Hopefully Apple will release a fix for this?

I have done a thorough test and you are 100% correct. It doesn't matter what you do to avoid this problem, the moment you leave 'Best for Retina' display resolution, the problem occurs. It can be very consistent, or very random - unpredictable. If a window shows up before login talking about the previous restart, the problem does not happen. But from login only, almost every time.

I hope Apple comes up with a solution soon as well. Besides this one problem, I LOVE my MacBook Pro w/Retina. The large, fast SSD and the 16gig in such a small package makes this a great system for on-the-road development.

Hi guys, i can tell you from first hand that Apple is working really hard to fix the issue. i just went off the phone with Colin from Apple care and we took the following steps to work around the black screen issue:

So here is what we did and for me this is still working:

- Turn your macbook on and after you hear the boot sound hold down the shift key to boot into safe mode.

- Then login and go to system prefrences.

- Go to energy, the light bulb icon, (my version is in dutch so i dont exactly know what is called like in the enligsh version).

- In energy setting select the "automatic video selection" box, it should be marked and blue now.

- Next reboot in normal mode.

- Check if the automatic video is still switched on( it should be)

- Now shutdown.

- Turn the macbook back on and boot into safe mode again.

- Now again check if the automatic video is still switched on (it should be deselected now).

- Turn the macbook off again.

- Turn it back on and boot normal.

- Once logged deselect the automatic video selection so it is switched off (the box should be grey again now).

- Turn off the macbook.

From now on the black screen issue should be fixed (for me it is)

i hope it also works for you. Its not a fix but its a workaround, Apple is working as we speak to solve the issue and i must say the service from Apple is really good. Thanx Colin and cheers ;-)

The ONLY fix that I have seen work 100% of the time is to change your resolution to Best for Retina. Since I saw this problem begin the day I installed Mountain Lion (and I installed it on the first day it was available), I have had ZERO problems with my screen set to Best for Retina.

You can always change the resolution to something higher while you use it, but you need to change it back before shutdown/restart. I'm sure Apple will fix this since so many people are seeing it.
