black screen after login, Mountain Lion on Macbook Retina

I've been using Mountain Lion for a while, and regularly I get a black screen, right after the login screen (after entering the password).

Often I have to reboot several times until it boots properly.

It is not clear when or why it happens: it could be some 3rd party code (gfxCardStatus, CUDA 5.0 sdk, steer mouse, Microsoft Intellimouse driver?) or something else.

Does anyone else have a similar issue?

I've also noticed that when I get the BSOD, it's after I enter my password to login. I can turn on VoiceOver and it reads like I'm still at the login screen. So I login again, and even though the screen is black, if I move my mouse all the way to the upper left, I can click the apple menu, use the arrow keys to reboot. Then it seems fine. For now I'm just switching back to "Best for Retina"

Seems like Apple Executives and the Engineering team are indeed on top of this problem.

They have reached out to me to find out what kind of problems I have been hoping and I expect sooner or later they are going to be able to come to a conclusion as to what the problem may be.

In other words, sit tight. I am confident, based on my conversations with them, that this problem will be resolved.

After a rather frustrating day with Apple Care and the Apple Store, I am very relieved and proud of the way Apple went the extra mile to reach out to me on this problem.

Apple also contacted me last night... I told them the issues I was encountering, and told him that I followed someone else's solution on here and it seems to have resolved it completely for me.

I did 2 things at the same time, so not sure such one fixed it (I still have multiple user accounts with auto login turned off)

I installed the retina update through software update AND rebooted holding shift to get into safe mode, went into system preferences, and turned ON graphics switching, and did a reeboot.

I've had no issues since, with all apps I was running still running. (Including gfxcardstatus)

The chap was very nice, laughed a lot at my surprise of getting the call, and hopefully they'll release an update so everyone (even people who don't read the support forums) will be sorted.

I'll double check what version of gfxcardstatus I'm running and post back later just in case I'm still on 2.

I wonder why you thought Wacom driver was the culprit in the first place?

For me, my machine would randomly freeze and go into blank/black screen while using the Wacom tablet. Moving mouse, typing on keyboard or touching the touchpad would not generate any responses. The only way to get the machine running again is to force a reboot. But then after typing password on login screen, it would go into blank screen again for at least a couple of times, until usually by the third forced reboot then I will get a window saying something like "your system crashed, press cancel to boot without launching opened apps".

Below is the part of crash log indicating some kind of connection with Wacom driver: BSD process name corresponding to current thread: WacomTabletDrive

"

Shut down your machine.

Power it back on while holding the 'shift' key (left or right, doesn't matter)

You will see a greay progress bar go across the screen while you boot in to 'safe boot'

Once booted, login, and go to Energy Saver and turn on 'Automatic Graphics Switching'.

Reboot back in to normal mode, and you should be able to log back in and see again.

"

This?

Good to know it worked for someone else. That's what I told the apple engineer I'd done, so whatever it does, can hopefully it can be worked into some kind of patch for everyone else.

Wonder what's causing it!

I'm experiencing the same issue as the original poster, and also share the "non optimizied for retina" resolution, no auto-login characteristics.

ben.lausman's workaround (boot into safe mode, switch the Energy Saver graphics switching property to automatic) temporarily solves the problem, but only for that particular boot cycle. After leaving the rMBP off overnight, the black screen after login reoccurs and I have to do the workaround again.

Fix this Apple!

I'm desperate.

Today, for 3 times I turned on my MacBook Retina and after entering the password screen completely black. The only thing to do is to shut it down brutally. (Luckily it was not necessary to remove the battery otherwise there would be fun)

At the fourth attempt the machine running again.

Help me! Please!

I do not play with the computer but I work with that! I can not lose so much time and also risking losing data.

Please, help me!

Go to "System Preferences" > "Displays" and set the resolution to "Best for Retina display".

Then go to "System Preferences" > "Users and Groups" > "Login Options" and set the "Automatic Login" to any user (maybe yourself).

With these two you will probably not experience the issue. If I am right keep it like that until Apple delivers a patch.

Hope this helps.
