How do I turn off this new **** Guest account?

In upgrading to mountain lion I checked the 'back to my mac' option in the iCloud setup, this now has enabled a special "Guest User" account which reboots the computer into a locked down Safari-only mode to entice thieves to go online.

I don't want this. I've disabled "back to my mac", but this account will not go away.

I've tried unchecking the "Allow guests to log into the computer", but it is greyed out and I'm not allowed to uncheck it, even after unlocking the settings.

Lion used to have a setting under Preferences->Security/Privacy->Advanced where you could set an option "Disable restarting to Safari when screen is locked" to turn this off, but this setting is now gone in 10.8

At my wit's end, need to disable this login.

Any ideas?

@Omniver - I just upgraded my Mac and was facing the same issue. Well here is what you have to do just as Moses3d mentioned. Log in as Guest user, unlock the pane i.e log with your admin credetianls and uncheck the "Allow Guest to log on to this computer" Lock it and come back to your Admin user. Thats it you are done. Hope this helpss.

@Moses3d - Thanks mate that worked for me and I am a new user to Mac - Just few hours old :-)

Even if the original poster wouldn't find this relevant anymore, I just wantedto share what I did to disable this new type of guest account to help others seeking a solution.

1. Make sure "Allow guests go log in this computer" and "Allow guests to connect to shared folders" are unchecked under the Guest Account

2. Make sure "Find my Mac" is also unchecked in te iCloud settings under System Preferences

3. Go to "Users & Groups".

4. Click "Login Options".

5. Under "Display login window as", select "name and password".

6. Log out to make sure new guest account is gone.

Optional: Go back to "Display login window as", select "List of Users" If desired.

I know this post is quite dated, but I still don't see an answer that met Omniver's exact case.

Your issue is mine to a tee.

Sounds like there's no real harm in having this Guest account...and maybe I'm stuck with it showing up on the login from here forward.

However, it's a work machine and none of my collegues have the Guest account at login (Since they have not tinkered with iCloud).

I have tried all solutions posted:

  • "Find my Mac" is disabled
  • Logged in and out of iCloud
  • Guest Account greyed out in System Preferences -> Users & Groups (Padlock in lower left is in the unlocked position)
  • Unable to uncheck box "Allow guests to login to this computer" with padlock unlocked
  • This is a Safari only Guest login, so I can't Logout of the Guest account

Wishing I hadn't enabled "Find my Mac" in the first place.

Thanks for any help/comments in advance.
