No sound with mirroring

I successfully mirror my iMac to my Apple TV, but I don't get sound to the Apple TV. I Opt+click the volume icon on the menu bar, but Apple TV is not an option under output. When I go to Sound preferences, my Apple TV shows up as an output option, but with the Type of "AirPlay".

Does mirroring provide sound to the Apple TV, or is that only an option through AirPlay?

I tried your suggestion hoping it would work. I have had to restart my new imac each time I mirror from it becasue the apple tv does not transfer the audio. However, I am able to mirror audio and video perfectly from my macbook air. Does anybody else have any suggestions? Does apple look at these threads? Are they aware of the problem? I'm new to this forum.

I have frequently had problems where the display mirrors perfectly, but audio will not transmit to Apple TV, even after rebooting the Apple TV and logging my user off, and logging back on. When in the System Preferences, under Sound, the Apple TV option was not selectable, as it bounced right back to Built In speakers option. However, when I went into iTunes, and tried to select a music file to play through Apple TV, it required my password of the Apple TV. Once I was given "permission" to use the Apple TV, iTunes audio played through Apple TV just fine, and proper mirroring was restored. I have chosen to Clear Password in my Apple TV, under the Air Display menu, which may be a semi-permanent fix.

I experiencd the same problem. In my case, i had been using Bluetooth for an external audio device prior to watching Apple TV. Eventhough the external audio device was turned off [ i.e. the audio was not redirected there ], audio was only coming from my MacBook Air; not the TV. Once I turned Bluetooth off on the MBA, audio was available on the television connected to the Apple TV.....

Hope this helps others...

jgobert is right. First page of the forum. APPLETV can't be in an app has to be at home screen. if its not put it to sleep then rewake it and all is good. No need to reboot mac.... Holding down Option while clicking the sound horn is useful for changing your speaker outputs quickly and seeing what its doing. When its not working it won't even let you select your AppleTV.

Only problem i have now is sometimes it blows up (magnifys) my screen so i only see about a 1/4 of the screen running a mid 2011 Mac Air 11".

I'm getting the inference from these responses that it's acutally possible to mirror sound along with image from my Mac Air 11" (10.8.11) to Apple TV. I'm getting a sharp image, but no sound. And when I de-select Apple TV-AirPlay in the Sound Output settings of System Preferences, I lose the picture!

I have the same problem. About half of the time when I want to stream just audio to my AppleTV it doesn't work. I try pressing "option+speaker_icon" and selecting AppleTV as an output device and it just bounces back to "internal speakers".

When I open system preferences and go through the "Sound" settings icon there it also does not work.

Up to now I have just always restarted my MBA (2012). Thank god the reboot time is only 20 seconds otherwise I would be majorly **another-word-for-angry**.

Hopefully there is some software update for Mac or AppleTV to fix this issue. When I stream music from my iPhone 4, iPad or iPod Touch (3rd gen) there isn't any problem at all.

Other info:

- my girlfriend with her 2012 rMBP also has this issue

- we are running the newest version of ML (just checked for updates)

- AppleTV is connected to Airport Extreme over LAN cable -> then over HDMI -> TV -> Audio out -> Amplifier

- I would say this problem arises 50-60% of the time. When I do the complete mirroring (screen AND audio), this issue arises less often (30%). In all cases I reboot and it usually works.

NOT HAPPY APPLE! plz fix!

Edit: took out questionable language
