No sound with mirroring

I successfully mirror my iMac to my Apple TV, but I don't get sound to the Apple TV. I Opt+click the volume icon on the menu bar, but Apple TV is not an option under output. When I go to Sound preferences, my Apple TV shows up as an output option, but with the Type of "AirPlay".

Does mirroring provide sound to the Apple TV, or is that only an option through AirPlay?

UPDATED TO NEWEST APPLE TV VERSION 5.1: -----------> everything working great!

I can now connect to speakers by option+clicking the speaker symbol in the top bar
I can now connect itunes to speakers by clicking the airplay symbol in itunes
When I mirror my display now, sound always plays back too!

EDIT: This may just be temporarily buggy but I will post anyways incase somebody has the same issues:
1) My photostream screensaver will not play anymore. When I try to log in to photostream (over the photostream icon on homescreen) it displays "unable to sign in - Apple TV cannot connect to server at this time".
2) I noticed that when I airplay music over iTunes to appleTV (music I did not buy on the itunes store), the appleTV just displays "unknown artist- unknown track", even though the ID3 tags for the songs are correct.

sound does go through the mac to apple tv via mirroring but you will have to re-start the system. i am having the same issue. everytime the apple tv goes to sleep, and comes back on the audio will not go through but after a restart it works. kinda annoying.

i also have same problem with the video, it says the device is not on or connected to use mirroring option but it plays airplay though. we need an update on this apple

If it is just vlc then try to quit it and restart vlc again. It helps for me. But some times it doesn't stream any audio at all to the atv until I restart my mbp. It's really annoying. Control+volume and Apple TV also doesn't work for me because as soon I click on atv it takes it back to the internal speaker selection. Didn't expect this sort of bug from apple at least. After the arc update things are going pretty smooth but it still does it some times which makes me mad as ****. I think the HDMI is still the best option as atv doesn't even support extended desktop. ATV ***** Apple
