No sound with mirroring

I successfully mirror my iMac to my Apple TV, but I don't get sound to the Apple TV. I Opt+click the volume icon on the menu bar, but Apple TV is not an option under output. When I go to Sound preferences, my Apple TV shows up as an output option, but with the Type of "AirPlay".

Does mirroring provide sound to the Apple TV, or is that only an option through AirPlay?

I figured out how to get audio to work with airplay mirroring using VLC. Click on the window for VLC (so it appears as the current app running at the top of your screen) and click Audio. From Audio's drop down menu, select Audio Device. You will notice it is currently set to play audio through your built in output. Click Airplay. Problem solved.

Note: You must have your mac hooked up to your apple tv and have a movie/show playing to access the Audio Device option.

Your welcome!

macbook air 2013

Got it working by changing the audio output to my ATV first, and then go up to the top to turn on AirPlay. Little glitch but then the audio kicked in after a second or 2.

On a side note possibly related - Started the audio to the ATV when the hdmi cord was unplugged but the power was on. I saw a post that mentioned that it works after the ATV comes out of sleep. I just happened to do it by coincidence.

BTW- Can we get past having to preform voodoo to make this work? Do we really have to wait for the new OS? Seriously.

DC Soup's solution solved this issue for me.

His solution was to do, in Terminal.app, the following commands:

sudo dscacheutil -flushcache

sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder

Just for the benefit of others searching google, my issue was that my bluetooth speaker (Bose Mini) was paired properly, but wouldn't output any audio (despite software/System Preferences showing that it was paired properly) - audio was just coming through the laptop speakers instead. The only time this occurred was when an iHome speaker was available as an AirPlay speaker (even though it wasn't used by this computer - in fact it was in use by another computer).

The above terminal command to flush the cache immediately enabled sound through the paired bluetooth speaker.

I can get sound when mirroring on my ipad but not my macbook pro.

Preferences does not allow me to change sound output to apple tv even thought the option is not greyed out

My wireless network is via my bt router and everything else works with that

To me it seems like a problem with my macbook pro software Mavericks 10.9.4 and its connection with apple tv- but I do't know how to resolve that

Any help would be appreciated
