I've never used an iPhone in conjunction with a PC, but I have seen the entire Windows icon set, and I've never seen a special one for apple devices. So, unless the iPhone has its own icon embedded in the iOS, then there is probably no way to give it a custom icon without replacing the windows icon entirely. Has it ever pulled up a custom icon before, or did you just (reasonably) think it would?
i know that when i had my 3gs, the icon would be an "apple" icon. but since changing to a 4s, the device shows up with this "generic" icon.
Hmmm... maybe you could right-click on the device when it is plugged in, then select the "properties" (or whatever it's called, I forget what it is in 7; but it's at the bottom of the dropdown menu), then there might possibly maybe be the option to change the icon for that device in that menu somewhere.
yeah, i can click on "properties" but no option to change from there. maybe it is because i have a 64bit OS and perhaps apple didn't link the right icon?
Possibly. The only thing I could think to tell you is to Google and find an icon you'd like to use, and then navigate to c:\\windows\\system32\\Shell32.dll (back this file up immediately) then use a program like 7zip to extract all of the contents, put your custom icon in and rename it what the default portable device icon is named (you'll have to rename that one something else first), and then re-compress the whole package and paste it into the system 32 folder (make sure it is named the same thing as the original dll, and then it should give you that pop-up window, click replace) and then hope it works. If not, get rid of the modification immediately and replace it with the original, so as to not induce a fatal exception and blue-screen your PC.
thanks frost byte! i'll try and give it a shot...
I have this problem too. except I have an Ipad 2. Did you get to solve it?
On windows explorer it shows a generic icon, but on autoplay it does show the ipad icon!!
how to fix it 😟
If it's only the icon you are worried about, but everything works, why bother?
because I want the icon to show as it is supposed to.
If you dont have anything to say that contributes to this thread, why bother??
I did contribute, and there is no reason to be rude. In point of fact, this is the wrong place to ask your question. You need a Windows forum. Try this one, it's excellent: http://windowssecrets.com/forums/
i did not work for me. if you get it working, please let me know!
p.s. - i just ignore people like this guy. 😉
I too have Win 7/64 bit, and this is what I'm seeing:
black iPhone 4/iOS 5.1.1 - black iPhone icon
white iPhone 5/iOS 6.0.1 - white iPhone icon (even looks longer than iPhone 4 icon)
white iPad 2/iOS 5.1.1 - white iPad icon
Have you named your device in Settings>General>About>Name ? Don't know why that would make a difference, but the name I assigned is what shows up in Win Explorer, so maybe it does have something to do with the icon.
Did you ever fix this? I just got the 5s and see the same generic icon. My previous iphone 4 and current iPad third gen show the correct name and icons. It's a mild irritation. For the record my new phone is named on about as Wayne's iphone but still got same generic icon. Anyone have a 5s and see the same? I think maybe some devices are hard coded not too display it perhaps. It's not an ios 7.02 issue as my iPad runs it too but has the iPad icon
Cheers

Did you ever sort this out? My iPhone 5s shows same generic icon - name is correct though with 'Waynes iPhone'.
