Formatting phone numbers in Contacts?

Pre-Mountain Lion, Address Book (now Contacts) had the ability to customize how phone numbers were displayed based on matching a pattern. I had several definitions, because I deal with phone numbers in many countries. Also, I prefer periods instead of dashes or slashes to split up pieces of the phone number.

But, I can't find that functionality any more. Has any one else seen it?

I just noticed this hint at http://macosxhints.com/ which references http://www.macobserver.com/tmo/article/ios-6-auto-dialing-phone-extensions

if you use ";" to designate an extension it acts as a "wait" command when dialing in iOS on the iPhone (and probably other phones) on the phone the dialing will wait for you to hit a key to contue dialing the rest of the numbers - which is nice if you have to wait for a message to say something like "Welcome to XYZ Inc." before dialing the extension. Alternatively you can use one or more ","s to deisgnate 2 second pauses. In both cases, numbers entered with a semi-colen or a comma seem to display in a pretty good format of:

+1 (nnn) nnn-nnnn;NNNN or +1 (nnn) nnn-nnnn,,,NNNN

It would be nice to have a space befor the punctuation, but it isn't too bad.
