Mail bug in Mountain Lion

There seems to be a new bug introduced to Mail in Mountain Lion.

In Mail preferences, on the Composing tab, you can still set "Send new messages from account of selected mailbox." Unfortunately, this setting seems to have no effect and all new mail is sent by default from the first account in your mail accounts list.

Any idea how to work around this?

Thanks!

BLESS YOU, Kijug! You solved my problem. Whenever I opened up Mail to initiate a new email send, it was always choosing a secondary Gmail account, not my primary Me.com account. I checked in Preferences and could not find a way to set a default mail account. Another post here said to be sure your accounts in Preferences were in the order you wished, with your primary account at the top, and my Me.com account was. I was so frustrated.

But your suggestion to rearrange the order from within Mailboxes in the leftside column was brilliant! It worked. And I had no idea you could even rearrange them. There is no information in Help that this is possible.

No longer do I have to manually change the sending email box on every new email thread I send.

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!!!

Well, I now have a new take on the problem of the miscellaneous malfunctions in mail with Mountain Lion. I made an appointment with a One on One advisor at Apple, who immediatly referred me to the Genius Bar. The Genius said that my problems (intermitten or nonexstent mail sounds and failure of "rules" to create folders) was due to problems with the download of data from my old computer to the new one. She said that when downloads are done, sometimes the old programs do not transfer accurately to the new computer, and that failure to transfer correctly causes the new computer (i.e. Mountnain Lion) to react in strange and unpredictable ways. She did some rather complicated-looking maneuvers "under the hood" in the programs, and now, at least for the time being, everything is working well. Time will tell, but her explanation makes more sense than anything elso so far. The fix does require someone in the Genius Bar who realy knows what they're doing.

Update to above. Mail sounds are gone AGAIN! The "rules" folders still work, but the mail sounds come and go again after the computer sleeps. I wonder if this occurs on all computers with Mountain Lion, or only some. Does anyone know how prevalent the problem is? If it occurs in all Mountain Lion OS, why do the people at Mac Support, One-on-one, and Genius bar seem not to know about it? The least they could do if they know about it is to let owners know that it's a known problem. If the problem is not on all Mountain Lion OS, would a different computer be likely to workk better. Mine is still new enough to return and rebuy.................

del and suzy, this might be another problem not related to Mail. I've had system sounds gone silent once in a while, too, on all the Macs I work on. Trash sound, Mail sound, etc. Try this. Open Activity Monitor and search for the process 'coreaudio', force quit the process. It will restart and the system sounds will be back to normal.

Have to really wonder if you and some others understand the bug for which this topic was started. It only applies when messages have already been moved from an Inbox to another folder, and you then go to reply to one of those.

It is unbelieveable that people are posting any and all email related problems here, with no clue about the original topic. 😁

Therefore the problem you have solved is a differnent issue, it would seem.

That's not how I read the OP's post, not even in the least. And I've been following this topic since page one.

This bug is a real pain. So this is what I did, its not a solution to the situation but worked for me. I removed all the mail accounts from the app leaving just the one I want like default account. then I added one by one the new accounts, you still have the same problem but at least your mails and replies go out from the account you want. Hope this work for you guys. I really hope Apple get this right soon.

That's not a solution OR a workaround. That's simply not filtering your email to avoid the problem. It works about as well as "don't use Mail and you won't have that problem."

Granted, I did just stop using Mail, but I continue to follow the thread because Postbox crashes too much and I'm hoping a fix will show up. I'd like to see Apple actually fix the problem because it seems a bit like a no-brainer that you'd want your email sending from the same email it went to, no matter if it's filtered or not.

Just add it to the long list of other no-brainers that Apple doesn't seem to care about. (Hello, notifications that don't stop or quiet while you're actually talking on the phone? Who actually thought flipping a switch everytime you get on the phone--and then having to switch it back when you're done--was a good idea?)

Hi guys,

I have the same problem, emails from folders(not original Mailboxes) don't reply from the right email.

Also, I noticed that all the emails that go to those folders don't count on the Mail application icon on the Dock, in the red circle that shows the number of new emails. Do you experience the same?

It looks like any folder away from the original Mailboxes are not linked in any way with the mail service, something that it used to work well in Snow Leopard.

Miraculously, the post below about Lion works for Mountain Lion as well.

Re: Mail 5 (OSX Lion) does not work after mailbox migration

Dec 15, 2011 1:43 PM (in response to Alejandro M. Ramallo)

This same thing happened today when migrating a friend's laptop.

THE SOLUTION:

Inside the Library folder (Lion hides this folder now, so hold down the option key and use the Go menu in the finder — Library will appear in the menu. Go there.) you'll find the Mail folder. Inside the mail folder was another folder called V2. I simply took the contents of V2 and dragged them to the parent folder (Mail).

When I launched mail again, everything was back to normal. As Apple says, "It's that simple!"

Nothing! I tried it and it didn't fix anything, it just takes your Mail to zero(no accounts, no configurations, etc). So I ended up restoring everything with Time Machine.

I gave up with this Mountain Lion thing. The Mail replying issue is a big pain for me due to all my accounts and folders, but also there are things I can't stand in this new system, either functions or visuals.

I asked Apple for a refund because I had bought the ML System through the AppleStore, they said they will pay me back during the next 7 days.

I will restore my previous Snow Leopard system that I consider way much better than this one and maybe wait for a new version in the future.

Good luck every one!
