Mail bug in Mountain Lion

There seems to be a new bug introduced to Mail in Mountain Lion.

In Mail preferences, on the Composing tab, you can still set "Send new messages from account of selected mailbox." Unfortunately, this setting seems to have no effect and all new mail is sent by default from the first account in your mail accounts list.

Any idea how to work around this?

Thanks!

Miraculously, the post below about Lion works for Mountain Lion as well.

Interesting! Just to be sure before I try it: What does that fix in Mountain Lion?

This should fix mail.app crashing or not opening when clicking on it. Hopefuly it works.

Nothing! I tried it and it didn't fix anything, it just takes your Mail to zero(no accounts, no configurations, etc). So I ended up restoring everything with Time Machine.

I gave up with this Mountain Lion thing. The Mail replying issue is a big pain for me due to all my accounts and folders, but also there are things I can't stand in this new system, either functions or visuals.

I asked Apple for a refund because I had bought the ML System through the AppleStore, they said they will pay me back during the next 7 days.

I will restore my previous Snow Leopard system that I consider way much better than this one and maybe wait for a new version in the future.

Good luck every one!

I'm assuming you moved the folders called IMAP, POP, et al under ../Users/username/Library/Mail/V2 to ../Users/username/Library/Mail ?

Unfortunately dy1112's suggestion does not fix the problem that this thread is about. It may address completely different issues, but not the bug where all replies from "On My Mac" folders come from a single default e-mail address ... not the address that actually received the message. This only affects users with multiple e-mail addresses who sort incoming messages into folders using Rules.

It's a huge pain in the neck and so far no fix in sight.

Jan 22, 2013 2:41 PM in response to PrincetonMacUser

Indeed. I get this dreaded image that everyone at Apple only has one @apple.com email address, and only uses live search to get to old emails, no mailboxes. They'd never see this bug and may not put much priority on it.

I don't think they use rules, either. I know Steve loved live filtering/search on a monolithic db (eg iTunes). Ever tried to find one mail rule in 500+?

Jan 22, 2013 4:47 PM in response to Glenn Gutierrez

LOL. You might be right. What if Apple discourages their staff from using non-Apple emails? Or what if Apple employees are so proud of their Apple.com email addresses that they don't consider this bug to be an issue.

And it right that this thread has been discussing more than one Mail bug. I now wonder which bug Brian Dear was discussing when he said he spoke to Terry Blanchard, the manager of OS X Mail, when he wrote "I heard back from Terry who suggests that 10.8.3 has a FIX for the problem we've all been facing."

As a matter of fact searching a large email database can be a big problem, which I find is solved by the recently released InfoClick http://nisus.com/InfoClick/. fyi 😎

Now I have to go back and read 21 pages of this discussion to find out what Mail bug this discussion is about. The Mail bug I have is my Previous Recipents and Address Panel are both empty, so when addressing a new message automatically looking up addresses as I type does not work.

Jan 22, 2013 10:21 PM in response to suncat100

This ismost defintely a bug. I have 7 different emal accounts cheked in my mail app. All have separate inboxes, even if they may then subseuently be filtered in to different work related mailboxes.

No matter what email address an email was received on, the replies all go to the default for NEW messages.

This is a complete balls up.

As is the other feature that mail now insists on adding my own adress as cc to "reply to all" messages so I receive my own messages. A feature? Give me a break

Each new drop of the OS seems to introduce some major **** up and I for one am getting cheesed off with it.

If aple do not monitor these discussions with a view to fixing problems, what is the correct route to official try and make a point that smething is a pile doggie dos.

seanfromminato-ku Check your Mail/Composing preferences. Under Composing: is a checkbox for "Automatically [menu] myself" where the pulldown menu lts you choose Cc: or Bcc:. With the checkbox off you get neither.

After upgrading from 10.7.5 to 10.8.2 using Migration Assistance built into the OS X Installer, I noticed some of my preferences I thought had been changed. Of possible relevamnce to this long thread I see Addressing has the option to send new messages from: [Menu] with coinces of specifying any of my 8 accounts, or "Account of selected Mailbox". Is that last option new? Could it address some of the concerns voiced on this thread?

I acknowledge I have read only part of this thread and this preference may have been coverd. I only just discoverd this refence myself and thought pointing it out myght be useful.

Jan 23, 2013 9:18 AM in response to Tom Ritch

Thanks but neither of those Preference options addresses the bug that started this thread.

I confirmed that my Preferences are set as you suggest.

But when I reply to a message that has been sorted into an "On my Mac" folder via a Rule, Mail:

1) always replies from the same default e-mail address, NOT the address which received the message

2) if I "Reply all", it Cc's the address of mine that received the e-mail, yet another irritation

Once again, this bug only affects users with:

1) multiple e-mail addresses

2) Rules that sort incoming e-mails to those various addresses into "On my Mac" folders

... and then attempting to reply to one of those sorted messages.

Moreover, this bug did NOT exist in Mail in Mac OS versions prior to Mountain Lion. It's a bug, not a feature, and I sure hope Apple fixes this soon.

The matter doesn't necessarily involve rules, at least not for all people. In my case, I don't use any rules to move messages out of the Inbox; I move them manually to other folders. But from there, the problem occurs as you summarize: when replying to one of those moved messages, Mail bizarrely uses my default account, not the receiving account.

How in the world anyone at Apple could have thought this to be normal behavior is a true mystery!

Hi am jumping on the bandwagon. I reckon if we all bombard Apple email feedback

Under Mail/provide mail feedback they will do something. I have the same issue as the original post. Have tried deleting email accounts, tried changing the order of the accounts in the inbox, disabling iCloud, looking in preferences and making it default to one (that it still doesn't do) and finally tried the fix given on an earlier post to move folders within the library from a V2 file to mail.

Nothing works but if we all send feedback surely Apple will get fed up with us?

Jan 28, 2013 4:18 AM in response to Joel2314

Apple, please read this discussion and fix it! It's a major PITA!

Apple doesn't participate in these forums. It is purely a user to user tech support venue.

I imagine if someone linked a discussion to a bug report, it might get to them.

Also, imagining it will be fixed outside of the normal update timeline is probably not productive. They're not going to create some special patch to fix just that issue.

Nobody here can alter Apple's develpment timeline, so whining to us isn't going to change anything. If 10.8.3 comes out and it hasn't been fixed, please continue with the wailing and gnashing of teeth using the Feedback links.

I’ve found a solution to the problem:

1) Close Apple Mail.

2) Go to Library/Mail/V2/MailData

3) Take all files which begin with "Envelope" (Envelope Index, Envelope Index-shm etc …) and drag them to the desktop.

4) Restart Mail.

5) Click Continue, all mails will get imported again.

6) Try to reply from various accounts.

It worked for me, it also fixed a problem I had with attachments (I wasn’t able to attach PDFs).

Hope this helps!
