Q: Sound stuttering after Mountain Lion install

Dear community,

after having installed OSX Mountain Lion my sound startet stuttering whenever there is rapid movement on my screen.

This includes e.g. window movement, scrolling through image loaded websites or video playback (flash player, quicktime).

A restart didn't help. I'm using stereo output, not digital.

I have connected a second monitor but the problem persists after disconnecting it. Movement on the second monitor also causes the sound to stutter.

My GPU Diode temperature is at 85°C (there is some bug that keeps the GPU under load while a second monitor is connected AFAIK), but I guess it was the same under Snow Leopard.

In Snow Leopard the sound output was always perfect even under heavy load or heavy HDD I/O.

Any ideas?

I don't know which ML update is it, the poster says the problem fixed with the latest update.

Well, the App Store reports nothing, Software Update reports nothing, and I can't find anything on the web about an update to ML.

I know this doesn't help any of us now, but if you are wondering when Apple might release 10.8.1, read on:

I'm also posting on MR about this, having a similar issue with suttering / skipping since the upgrade

No drastic CPU useage when this happens, and it hits me at random. The PC does feel slower when its happening, though, and it seems to be triggered when swiping or typing or doing anything that requires processing (whereas if I just sit there listening to music, it wont start clipping by itself)

It happens to a fresh installed system with nothing else installed.  Either with the onboard card or later (installed after testing out with the onboard card) installed outboard audio interfaces.

sixfour - for me it's not the onboard sound card. I've experienced the skipping/crackling when using my DAC, so it's happening on the software side before it hits the hardware. (if my understanding of soundcards and DACs is correct)

ivan - no, i dont have sound flower

I get crackeling noise when using USB Audio.

Seems after I upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion some issues came up regarding my USB Audio Interface.

I use a LINE 6  PODxt plugged in through USB and record my guitar using it into LOGIC or other audio aps.  But...  i get this  annoying Crackle noise, and cant figure it out.

    Lvivske:
Clipping, not sure, it just never happened until Mountain Lion.

What Adjustments are you talking about  in Audio/Midi Setup?

    Hi, Ivan.

I did have Soundflower installed. I deleted it, fixed permissions, fsck, etc., rebooted.

Same problem. After 5, 10, 15, ? minutes of watching full-screen video (using DVD Player, VLC, Safari, Firefox, etc.), the sound starts to crackle, then cut out completely.

About half the time, the video stops also.

I've kept Activity Monitor open all the time, but the only significant activity is DVD Player at 30-45% CPU while playing a movie.

A reboot fixes everything, but after a few minutes of full-screen video, the problem returns.

Glad I found this thread as I've been struggling with this since my upgrade.

I first noticed the issue when gaming when after about 15mins I got the odd cursor jump which turns into stuttering when scrolling. It gets progressively worse and the sound stutters too. After approx 30 mins it's like I'm watching a slide show at 1 frame per second with the confusion of the mouse still operating on a delay!  It sort of feels like a gradual memory leak..?

I then noticed it when streaming video which I first put down to Internet lag.

Very unimpressed tbh. Slightly concerned reading the RAM question - I have 8gb of 3rd party RAM on board, is it likely to be an issue?

Will file a bug report too

I doubt if it is 3rd party RAM. All my RAM is from Apple, and I've tested it.

Never had any problems with sound since 10.0 (Cheetah) was released in 2001.

I installed M.Lion the day it was released, and instantly started having these major sound glitches and system slowdowns.

Definitly not about rams. My friend has the same 3rd party rams, same system, bought at the same day, but not experiencing this sound problem like I do.

Davidvoy, I have exactly the same problem on a new macbook air mid 2011 and on my faithful 2007 macbook pro.

The second after upgrading to ML, sound monitoring while recording through my podxt on logic or garage band became completely crackled  on both macs, I have plugged the podxt through the audio input on the macbook pro and it works although I have a lot more background noise and bad distortion while recording at the volume I was recording through the USB. I guess they have messed up the audio-midi through USB but I don't know where to call or email to file for that bug... any advice ?
