Q: Sound stuttering after Mountain Lion install

Dear community,

after having installed OSX Mountain Lion my sound startet stuttering whenever there is rapid movement on my screen.

This includes e.g. window movement, scrolling through image loaded websites or video playback (flash player, quicktime).

A restart didn't help. I'm using stereo output, not digital.

I have connected a second monitor but the problem persists after disconnecting it. Movement on the second monitor also causes the sound to stutter.

My GPU Diode temperature is at 85°C (there is some bug that keeps the GPU under load while a second monitor is connected AFAIK), but I guess it was the same under Snow Leopard.

In Snow Leopard the sound output was always perfect even under heavy load or heavy HDD I/O.

Any ideas?

Don't feel bad. I got an invite but can't beta test because of some bug that keeps saying my Apple ID contact info isn't updated even though it is current...

Hopefully they will be sending out the update today or tomorrow.  They have been releasing several software and firmware updates over the last few days and they will want to give themsevles plenty of time should they need to do a short term fix before the holidays.  I'm sure they want their full week and a half of time off and to not have to be working on software during that period.  This is probably the only meaningful deadline they have to motivate themselves.

I only started experiencing this problem with audio stuttering a couple of weeks ago, and just put it down to a buffering issue with video streaming from YouTube, but now it's pretty much happening all the time even when I play files from an internal and an external HD.

I really hope Apple stops dropping the ball soon.

Had to stop using Aperture last week because it was frying files on my SD as it repeatedly tried to eject it while I was importing photos, and at the same time telling me not to eject the card while it was in use. Then the absolutely unusuable Final Cut Pro "upgrade" that turned it into something you'd find kids using in school. Not to mention the maps debacle, and what happened to Safari?

Seriously guys and gals - get it together already!!

With 10.8.3 there is no more shuttering issue.

3 days with the beta patch and nothing bad has happend so far. That's a good news but it's a shame it tooks so long to correct this !!! And we still don't know when the patch will be released.

This is really good news.  Unfortunately I think that we'll have to wait a while until 10.8.3 is released - these things take time so I'm guessing January.

I hope I'm wrong, an early Xmas present from Apple wouldn't go amiss (I'm easily pleased).

Until then I just have to put up with my six month old MBP behaving like a 10 year old PC.

    well

I certainly run an unusual hardware config, I think having access to betas would help delineate the numerous bugs I'm plagued with on a daily basis

I had the lead genius at my local apple store who agreed it is software related.  The engineering team kept delaying their response to him even and not filling him in.  Right now is about the time 10.8.3 would show if they are uploading it today.  But apple support hasn't done anything to help me on this matter.  I'd rather sell my apple hardware than ever have to deal with thier tech support.  It's just deplorable.

    lol "lead genius"

they gotta stop calling these ppl geniuses.   one of my clients just brought me his laptop after one of those "geniuses" attempted to reinstall the os following a head crash.   thats some crackshot deductive reasoning.  Needless to say I was barely able to scavenge his drive for files following that stunt.  5 gig recovered out of 110gig occupied space.   GENIUS!

I was trying not to call it the idiot bar out of respect.  But they can call themselves anything they want.  What matters are the products and their being able to support that.  I got the infamous line of "this is the first I've heard of that" speech and they really need to find a new line.  Just like this is the first time I've considered buying a Samsung laptop.  So, I've accepted they suck as a company, support is full of idiots, and corporate would rather throw customers into a tail chasing activity.

I'm going to get my 3rd party paperwork now to get this resolved as every facet of apple has dropped the ball.

I've jointed this thread as I belive I have a similar issue.  Since 10.8 I find that whenever I fast-forward video for a minute or so then return it to normal play, the audio stutters.  The video is fine, just the audio.  And if I pause the video and wait 10 seconds, the issue resolves itself.

Happens in Quicktime, VLC, iTunes and with all file formats.

Can anyone else confirm this too?

Running on a Mac mini 2010.

    Hello all,

Ive also had this problem with stuttering and kernal panics on my 27inch Mid 2011 iMac with 12GB Ram and 3.1GHZ processor.

I have visited two apple stores to get the machine repaired both unable to replicate the problem. So it's great to find this forum where others have had the same issues.

I agree with all above its taken a very long time to resolve and i'm glad i can once again enjoy my iTunes stutter free shortly.

An invite from Apple would be much appriciated as compesation to make multiple trips to take the iMac in, and boy i'll tell you they aint light things to carry at all.

So an invite to 10.8.3 would be greatly appriciated.

Glad to hear 10.8.3 does resolve all issues though and well done to all involved in getting this forum noticed, far more helpful then the genius team who attempted to sort my iMac out.

I thought I was mad enough at Apple and didn't have a reason to be madder.

    I was wrong.

Tl;Dr: Using my iMac, suddenly it did this. Had to reboot to fix. It stopped for about 3 seconds right before I recorded this video, which showed the ENTIRE SCREEN being SHIFTED as if the notifications center was open - but the notifications center was part of the desktop. Extremely weird. I tried moving my mouse and hit a "border" when it hit the broken notifications center. I moved my mouse back towards word, and bam, it started this again.

    This is just pathetic now.
