I think for now you have to use some other software. If you have wifi, AirDroid is free and does a lot more (also reads and sends SMS messages from the Mac).

- Just search and install AirDroid from Google Play store on the mobile and click start.

- Open a browser on the Mac and go to the address specified on the phone screen (you can bookmark it in the browser).

- Click the small camera icon inside the app (on the phone) and point the phone camera at the Mac screen.

The camera recognizes and reads the large dotty icon, and automatically connects the two.

It is very quick and handy. You will see messages, videos, pictures.. all the contents of the phone (even the clipboard if you want to do copy-paste between Mac and phone).

If you are an advanced user you can also setup Fluid (http://fluidapp.com/ free for Mac Os) to create a web App for the mac that opens AidDroid. Just tell Fluid to open any link inside its panels in the preferences, type the AirDroid address in the "URL" field and you can even add an icon (you can download it from the Play Store web page of AirDroid, just drag the icon to the desktop and choose it in Fluid preferences).

Oh, and you can also setup the Mac to open the newly created Fluid app for AirDroid every time the phone is connected. You can do it inside Apple's Image Capture application. In the bottom left corner of the window (when device is connected) there is a small "triangle in a box" icon tht shows/hides opening preferences for your device. You can choose any app there. Just select "Other.." in the menu and browse to find the application you wish.

First time you try to sync, you have to manually open the file transfer app.

Make sure the phone is in ptp mode(camera) and you have USB debugging on.

I can connect and access the internal storage, I just can't access the external micro-sd card.

Sorry, I haven't been able to grab anyone's 3S at work to try this out. At least, with the microSD card, you can pop it into a card reader (I have one that's barely bigger than the card that I keep on my keychain). Bit of a pain if you're using a case, though.

It is definitely Mountain Lion causing the problem and not any of the hardware.

I just purchased 2 Samsung Galaxy S IIIs.

I have 3 different MAC machines. Two with Mountain Lion, one with Snow Leopard.

Neither machine (Mac Book Pro - iMac 27inch) with Mountain Lion will detect the Galaxy using the Android Filetransfer, however the phone states it is connected to a PC via USB.

My MAC Mini that still uses Snow Leopard works fine with the Amdroid file transfer and both Galaxies.

AND I use VMWare to emulate Windows 7 on both of the Mountain Lion machines, with the WIndows 7 running, when I plug a Galaxy into the MAC's USB port, WIndows/VMWare Fusion prompts me to connect to either the MAC or the WIndows system. Choosing Windows, the phone is readily recognized in Windows when Connect as a Camer is selected in the phones pull down 'Ongoing' information settings.

I would have purchased two new iPhone 5s but since I purchased a new iPad 2 last December, and that has since been outdated in less than a year with Retina displays and 4g, I figured I get something less expensive, with more memory, and that runs Flash for now.

Hope this helps anyone having problems.

This may or may not help anyone, but I've found after the most recent update to Lion I have to trick the OS into mounting the phone as a mass storage device.

Since the last update to 10.7.5 (at least that's when I noticed it) if I just plug it in, it now does the dreaded "Connected as a media device" thing, which means it's doing nothing since the Android File Transfer app can't see it at this point.

What I do nowdays...(eyeroll)... is go into Settings -> USB Utilities, under USB mass storage I hit the Connect storage to PC button, which will show me a popup prompting me to connect the USB. When I do, I get the classic notification and screen allowing me to turn on USB storage which will give me access to both the internal storage and the MicroSD.

I'm pretty disappointed by both Apple's recent "QA" issues, and Google/Samsung for making us do this tapdance in the first place. It's been more than a decade since I plugged my first mobile device into my first Apple laptop; you'd think this sort of silliness would be behind us these days.

Hey Erik, could you please provide some context for your instructions? I see it was in response to Carlos on page 2 of this 8-page thread, dated Nov 10, 2012 -- quite a while ago.

(1) ANDROID FILE TRANSFER

I'm using a Samsung Galxy S3 and I long ago solved my USB cable connect to Mac problems by using the solution found here on one of the many threads like this one on Apple Discussions: •installing Android File Transfer (from here: http://www.android.com/filetransfer/ ) for use on my Mac computer. •enabling it to work by removing Samsung Kies from my Mac •refreshing Android File Transfer, and unplugging/replugging the USB cable. This provides a file directory interface on your Mac displaying contents of your Android device's SD card, and also if you have an external SD card, that too.

(2) YOUR METHOD: FTP BETWEEN YOUR MAC AND ANDROID DEVICE via SAFARI BROWSER ???

Is that what your solution is doing? FTP from Android device to Mac?

If so, are there advantages to your method vs Android File Transfer? Thank you.
