I think for now you have to use some other software. If you have wifi, AirDroid is free and does a lot more (also reads and sends SMS messages from the Mac).
- Just search and install AirDroid from Google Play store on the mobile and click start.
- Open a browser on the Mac and go to the address specified on the phone screen (you can bookmark it in the browser).
- Click the small camera icon inside the app (on the phone) and point the phone camera at the Mac screen.
The camera recognizes and reads the large dotty icon, and automatically connects the two.
It is very quick and handy. You will see messages, videos, pictures.. all the contents of the phone (even the clipboard if you want to do copy-paste between Mac and phone).
If you are an advanced user you can also setup Fluid (http://fluidapp.com/ free for Mac Os) to create a web App for the mac that opens AidDroid. Just tell Fluid to open any link inside its panels in the preferences, type the AirDroid address in the "URL" field and you can even add an icon (you can download it from the Play Store web page of AirDroid, just drag the icon to the desktop and choose it in Fluid preferences).
Oh, and you can also setup the Mac to open the newly created Fluid app for AirDroid every time the phone is connected. You can do it inside Apple's Image Capture application. In the bottom left corner of the window (when device is connected) there is a small "triangle in a box" icon tht shows/hides opening preferences for your device. You can choose any app there. Just select "Other.." in the menu and browse to find the application you wish.
I also explained how you can prove it.
Find my earlier comment. If you have a phone for which there is a solution, give it a try. Chances are, your problem is fixed (and WASN'T due to Mavericks, per se).
But if your phone still doesn't work with AFT, apply the workaround I described. Voila! Now your phone works with AFT and Mavericks. But reboot the machine... oops. It stops working again.
YES, it has been demonstrated to be a problem with Mavericks. And I half-suspect that Apple has been intentionally avoiding fixing it, since there is a known (temporary) workaround, and they should have had a fix for it out 2 updates ago.
My problem was more serious.
I downloaded 'Android File Transfer' by Google to MacBook 10.6.8. Connected Android v 2.5 phone but the AFT could not recognize the connection. Found the instruction to connect the phone first and then open AFT app. The moment I connected the phone, my Mac froze and thanks to DiskWarrior, I was able to correct the situation.
That happened with another app of AFT as well, so word of caution when connecting a Mac to Android or vv.
Jonathan-
Is "android file transfer" the name of the app? Can you give a link to it? I might be able to check it out.
Manufacturers of my devices included the link and said it was required.
Never tried to move files without it.
Guess I will uninstall it and see.
Doesn't mount or show up on the Mac.
Turned on/off USB debugging, tried mtp and ptp mode-nothing.
Galaxy S3.
I'll try to take my MBA to work tomorrow and check an S3. I'll let you know. It's a very nice phone but Samsung tends to have some, shall we say, idiosyncrasies.
Same problem here. Neither MTP nor PTP work, with our without Android File Transfer on Mountain Lion.
What device?
Guess that would help, eh? :-)

A pattern begins to develop.....
Weird thing is it did work - long enough to transfer 7+ GB of music and video. It then threw out an error message.
After that, I can't get it to work again.
Those are made by Samsung also aren't they?
That is the issue, I have a hybrid silicon/hardshell case.
Wifi transfer apps work and can access the sd card.
Samsung phones never did work on a Apple product
Thanks, konjarts... it worked. Both device and SD card shows from Samsung Galaxy S III and Galaxy Tab 10.1.
