I think for now you have to use some other software. If you have wifi, AirDroid is free and does a lot more (also reads and sends SMS messages from the Mac).
- Just search and install AirDroid from Google Play store on the mobile and click start.
- Open a browser on the Mac and go to the address specified on the phone screen (you can bookmark it in the browser).
- Click the small camera icon inside the app (on the phone) and point the phone camera at the Mac screen.
The camera recognizes and reads the large dotty icon, and automatically connects the two.
It is very quick and handy. You will see messages, videos, pictures.. all the contents of the phone (even the clipboard if you want to do copy-paste between Mac and phone).
If you are an advanced user you can also setup Fluid (http://fluidapp.com/ free for Mac Os) to create a web App for the mac that opens AidDroid. Just tell Fluid to open any link inside its panels in the preferences, type the AirDroid address in the "URL" field and you can even add an icon (you can download it from the Play Store web page of AirDroid, just drag the icon to the desktop and choose it in Fluid preferences).
Oh, and you can also setup the Mac to open the newly created Fluid app for AirDroid every time the phone is connected. You can do it inside Apple's Image Capture application. In the bottom left corner of the window (when device is connected) there is a small "triangle in a box" icon tht shows/hides opening preferences for your device. You can choose any app there. Just select "Other.." in the menu and browse to find the application you wish.
Carlos, NO, DON'T.
WHAT YOU ARE REALLY DOING IS JUST OPENING UP YOUR PHONE FILES FOR ANYONE ON THE INTERNET TO SEE, MODIFY AND DELETE.
There is plenty of solutions like this, there is also a SMB server (Windows file sharing) for Android, but for God's sake, at least use passwords, and not easy ones, and be really sure to shut the FTP or SMB down (not just leave the app) when you don't need them.
Anyway, you are transfering files on Wify exactly like Airdroid, what is the added bonus?
I have a Samsung S3 GT-19305 JB 4.1.1. Mac OS 10.8.2
I was having the problem not being able to use AFT.
Spent a long time trying to find solution.
Followed instructions above and it worked!
AFT now allows me to access the internal memory, and the external SD card.
Thank you Key2007!
Hold your horses...
First, after uninstalling Kies on 10.6.8, AFT still doesn't work for me. Believe me, I've doen a lot of testing with it.
2nd, I'm not a great fan of Kies, but if uninstalled, there no longer a convenient way to check for firmware updates (I don't enable checking for updates OTA on my Galaxy S3, since Samsung states they're allowed to push updates auotmaticallywithout asking you).Uninstalling & re-installing it every time is a big hassle, since it sticks 3 different daemons in various places which have to be killed.
Otherwise, since Kies (as of v2.0) supports drag-&-drop file transfer (to both internal storage & external SD card in the device, if present), there's really not much need for AFT for most people. I do need it working, since I have to keep Kies uninstalled for a different reason (I use Easy Phone Sync to sync the phone to iTunes, and it doesn't play well with Kies).
Hi Rayfromoside,
I tried exactly what you said, and when I hooked up my S4, I still got the error message. Who is your carrier? I'm on verizon. What I'm seeing that is funky, is my S4 always "connects as an installer" and not as MTP. I can't get it to default to MTP (verizon and samsung reps don't know what to do either) - and I don't want to root the phone.
Any other suggestions? Is it a verizon thing? It's very frustrating. My S3 was working just fine with Mountain Lion and AFT up until I bought the S4 this last weekend.
Thanks in advance,
Dizz
Thank You. You've helped me a Lot! So many nasty people tell me to get of ASC. Because I have an Apple computer and thought APPLE would be a good place to find out how to transfer phone phots to it. BUT I'm being asked to leave, I'm bothering them. because i dont have an iphone. LOL
I have the new Mac Book Pro. 10.8.4 SO i am not worthy of asking any samsung questions.
I have been having a similar issue since installing Mountain Lion, but I own an Asus Transformer Prime TF201 tablet. It looks like there has been a fix for Samsung users, but is there anything on the Asus front? I use Airdroid, but it's much slower than a direct USB connection. Any help would be much appreciated.
Can someone please help me. I have done the Kies uninstallation many times (the correct way), at least 8 times. IT DOES NOT WORK. Android File Transfer will NOT read my galaxy s4. It will read my brother's, and it will read my sister's galaxy s4 but not mine.
I really don't want to have to reset my phone. Anyone have any suggestions? Maybe something within my galaxy?
Already set the Media mode....allowed usb debugging... nothing works!
I had the same problem as Norger and Kevinovs and tried to find solutions through the past week. Finally, I gave up.
Yesterday, my friend send me a link of this Android file transfer and asked me to have a try. I downloaded it and surprisingly it worked. It was not free, but the trial version allowed me to use 15 days for free. That was enough for me.
Hope this helps anyone with the same problem.
First... Could toss my Apple MacBook Pro 17" 10.5.8 (Vintage according to Apple) out the window easily without crying. Apple had so many problems with this... wifi, Android Transfers from Samsung Galaxy S3, exploding batteries, etc.
Right now I could toss my Samsung Galaxy S3 out the window too without crying. It has never been able to connect to a Mac easily, and now I found out the hard way that it burns up SD cards! Yup.... another issue to look up on Google.
So, now that my SD Card is toast, I thought I would try to (or I must) put some of my photos on an external storage device.
Well I downloaded Kies, Unistalled Keys.... still get the same message!!!!
CAN'T ACCESS DEVICE STORAGE.
IF YOUR DEVICE'S SCREEN IS LOCKED, DISCONNECT THE USB CABLE, UNLOCK YOUR SCREEN, AND THEN RECONNNECT THE USB CABLE.
Which I think everyone in this forum has had.
I would try Airdroid.... but when you are talking about 2000 plus photos.... you are looking at infinity times 10 download time. I am scared about putting another SD Card in the phone for fear it will be burned out like the last one! What to do???
Is there no real solution to this issue?
I heard Samsung denies that the S3 burns cards or destroys them. But it is on so many forums! Just Google SD CARD PROBLEM SAMSUNG GALAXY S3.
Also there is a new update for my phone, and I can not install it because I am out of memory. So I need to figure out how to remove these photos and back them up.
Ideas thoughts....

Sorry to have to break this to you, but this is simply not true.
USB 2.0 has a theoretical transfer rate of 480 Mbps. The wifi on most smartphones does not come anywhere near that speed, by an order of magnitude or two.
If you are still having problems with Android File Transfer, see my earlier post in which I have summarized the solutions for different categories of problems with different phones.
However, if those solutions do not fit your particular situation, then you are one of the victims (like me) of changes made in OS X Mavericks which have not been fixed yet over 3 minor version updates.
I have demonstrated very clearly that it is in fact a problem with Mavericks, and yes, lack of USB connectivity *IS* a problem. Transferring via wifi is an unsatisfactory workaround. It is not a fix.
Can you explain more about this process and why it made you want to immediately remove it like it was a kind of trojan or backdoor written for macintosh?...Adobe also have process in background even when no application is open. Itunes does the same.
I deleted it simply because I have no idea what its purpose is, and I see no reason for Android File Transfer to run a background process. For all I know, it could be a security threat. And to make it worse, it's made by Google, the company which leaked my Gmail contacts and accompanying Google search history (intentionally or not, who knows) to spammers.
I deleted the Adobe updater background process after I installed Photoshop because it kept randomly using 100% CPU for some reason. I'd prefer if the iTunes Helper weren't there because it sometimes holds up installations that require that every application be closed, but it's there so iTunes can detect my iPhone and sync with it, so it has a good reason to exist.
I have a Motorola X and same problem here... as son as I updated to 10.8.5 i cannot read my phone anymore...
Tried to switch to PTP... I Photo works fine and i can access the pics.. but i cannot get to the data...
Haven´t finished reading the tread, but has anybody figured it out?
Regards
Hey Erikoliv...
As angry as I am about this whole ordeal (with Mac and Android and Motorola..which don´t seem to care about us)
I would like to try your option.. I know it is not a fix, but right now, it´s a solution.
Can you please explain your method as for dummies (meaning: me)?
I already have FileZila installed, can I use this program?
Have tried to locate Servidor FTP.. no luck... do you have a link?
Thanks!
Matthew:
With all due respect, NO, IT WASN'T, which I explained in detail in an earlier post on this forum.
There are various causes, depending on the kind of phone (and Android version). That much is true. But when all the known solutions don't work (or aren't applicable to that particular device), it was in fact the upgrade to Mavericks that broke AFT.
My phone was working with AFT one day. I performed a CLEAN install of Mavericks, and the next day my phone did not work with AFT. Same version of Android.
And, as it turns out, for the vast majority of people for whose situation there is no already KNOWN solution, it has turned out that it was the update to Mavericks that was the ACTUAL cause.
