Calendar sync via iTunes and USB does not work after Mountain Lion Upgrade

Hi,

I recently upgraded to Mountain Lion and since then my calendar events and notes won't get synced with my iPhone anymore. I use the good old USB cable to sync and recharge my iPhone.

After browsing through a couple of forums I get the impression that syncing can only be done via iCloud services from now on.. Is that right? I sincerely hope not. I have deep concerns to send my private data to some space in the digital nirvana where I have no control over it.

Any help on how I can get my calendar and notes to sync again via iTune and USB or WLAN is highly appreciated.

Best regards,

Frank N.

I went to the AppleStore and talked to a guy there. He claimed that he had no problems syncing his iPhone via iTunes and USB cable. Plus, there is no necessity to use iCloud for syncing now... OK, good news, but I am still stuck with my problem and I need a solution soon.

I'll carry on trying to fix the problem myself, now that I know that it has nothing to do with iCloud.

I investigated further, but was unable to solve the problem. Because I depend on my properly working iPhone calendar I finally decided to go back to Lion again. Fortunately I did not do TimeMachine-backup since the update to Mountain Lion (as if someone told me...). In my case that meant to do this on 2 computers (I sync my MacBook Pro and my MacPro computers every day).

Yesterday night after almost 5 hours I was ready and back to 10.7.4 again. Today I finally managed to get my iTunes and iPhone to sync properly again. Phew! What a relief!!!

I guess that I'll wait until version 10.8.2 to give it another try. To me it seems to be a bug in the new "Calendar" software. iCal / iTunes works OK and even gave me a report about duplicate and conflicting records. No messages like that from new "Calendar"!

Anyway, this was the very first time that I had to go back to the older OS version. I hope that Apple do a better job next time. ... now that Steve isn't around anymore to kick their a.....s. ;-)

All in all I am not very impressed about Mountain Lion.

Installed ML on Sunday and found the same problem. Spent Monday & Tuesday mornings at the local Boise Apple store.

Conclusions of the Geniuses:

1.Mountain Lion removes the option to sync Notes via USB/iTunes; iCloud is the only known way to sync Notes. (Not an acceptable option to me.)

2. ML still allows Calendar & Contacts sync via USB/iTunes (setup same as Lion: start iTunes: connect iPhone/iPod touch; select iPhone/iPod touch on the left side of the iTunes page; click on the "Info" tab and select Sync Contacts and Sync Calendars)

Backed up all my data and went back to the Apple store where they reinstalled Lion. Pity because breaking Notes out of the Mail app and adding Reminders to OS X (also only iCloud syncable) are both good moves.

I am an Apple user since 1982. I like Apple's innovations and in the past they went their way of bringing new and meaningful things to the public to change the world of using computers. But things like this "sync-disaster" with the need to return to the old OS version again aren't innovations--I regard them as oppression.

I can't see any good reason to force people to use iCloud, just because some guys at Apple think that it is a cool thing to do (and to justify the costs for their brand new data center). Like you I simply don't want to have private data (calendar, notes, or whatever) somewhere in the digital nirvana where I have no control over it. If someone needs iCloud, fine, but I don't.

After my return to Lion everything works fine again. Maybe it is time for a petition to let them guys know what we think about some of their "innovations". They should leave us the option to choose.

I also think that it is a bad idea to break Notes out of Mail as well as separating the old reminders from iCal.

hi,

i stumbled about the same thing upgrading to ML and i couldn' believe it!

Local syncing of Reminders and Notes is not possible any more and forcing (or tempting) users to store very private data on a remote server is simply iniquitous. I think Apple is making a big mistake here. All questions related to Cloud services are still open in regards of reliability and security. I admit, that Apple has to be a forerunner but they ruin their image by this. Understand me right, if someone want's it, fine, but this should always be optional!

Definitely i will not follow Apple this way (1984 seems to come true 1012).

Now my problem!

(sorry, hit the wrong button on my iPad, couldn't edit my previous answer so put it again in)

Now my problem!

How can i downgrade to Lion? I even would prefer to set up a clean system.

Unfortunately i don't have suitable backups on my timemachine.

I guess it is not possible to run the old Mail and iCal under ML!?

Will the new database of Contacts and Calendar of ML be useable under Lion?

Thanks for your answer?

Peter

PS.: I am really puzzled, that so few are aware and are accepting where Apple is going.

I (i am also a senior Apple follower since 1984) always thought they are "thinking different"!

Here's how I got back to Lion from ML - I too did not have a Time Machine backup

1. Backed up Calendar and Contacts (file/export) and copied to USB HDD

2. Copied the text of all my Notes into one Word file ad then to HDD

3. Did nothing with Reminders as this function is not in Lion

In retrospect, I probably did not need to do any of this as I had Cal, Contacts & Notes on my iPod touch and had not syc'd since installing ML

4. Manually copied all my docs, pictures and the total iTunes directory to USB HDD

5. Took my MacPro to the local Apple store - where I'd been the previous day to find out if I had misunderstood ML .. I hadn't - and the great folks there re-installed Lion.

6. Re-install MacOffice and copy over docs

7. Re-do all the basic set up stuff ... screen save, touchpad ...

8. Re-install Calendar & Contacts data (file/import) then laboriously created new set of Notes from the Word file. This took forever.

9. Copy backed-up iTunes diectory to the Mac, overwriting exisiting (essentially empty) directory put there by new Lion install. Set up iTunes to sync the way I want with iPod touch

Hey presto ! All done, system normal. All in all Apple wasted well over 12 hours of my precious time on this deal so I'm pretty ticked. All kudos, however, to the great support from the local Apple store - those poor guys were wandering around scratching there heads with an "I can't believe the Cupertino bozos pulled this stunt" look on their faces.

Total agreement about iCloud. See Woz's statement on this just a oouple days ago - he is NOT a fan.

Aug 12, 2012 4:43 AM in response to anc12

You guys went through quite some trouble! Although I also wasted many hours because of Apple's latest stunt, I was lucky that I did not do a TimeMachine backup on my 2 Macs. So it took a couple of hours to reinstall Lion and play back the backups on both Macs plus a few manual (re)entries into my calendar and that was it.

Two lessons learned from this.

1. Only do a TimeMachine backup when you are ABSOLUTELY sure that the new OS is working allright.

2. From now on quit buying and installing MacOS immediately when it comes out. Better wait a while and see.

Somehow I have got the impression that since Snow Leopard, MacOS is slowly going downhill, qualitywise.

I fully agree with Woz! If cloud data storage makes sense under certain circumstances--fine, but otherwise to **** with it. My data belong to me! And I want to have the option to choose.

Aug 12, 2012 11:13 AM in response to pawi_de

Open the Mail app, click on Help and search for "export mailbox". You'll get a Help screen with directions on how to backup your mail.

I have not personally used this function (I don't use Mail, I use Gmail in web browser) but it looks straightforward - essentially the same as the export function in Calendar and Contacts.

Aug 26, 2012 9:34 AM in response to FrankNStein

This is outrageous. I will NOT be forced to use iCloud, and consider this grounds to start considering abandoning Apple and OSX...and this is after decades of evangelim and being responsible for puchasing hundreds of Apple computers over the years.

********!

SO - it does appear syncing is possible without iCloud...but only via IMAP email accounts, meaning I need to rebuild my email account to keep functionality I am accsutomed to - which also has the undesireable effect of putting my information on a web server anyway - although not Apple's at least.

Still utter BS...how is there no direct sync to Notes.app via USB or Wifi????
