Calendar sync via iTunes and USB does not work after Mountain Lion Upgrade

Hi,

I recently upgraded to Mountain Lion and since then my calendar events and notes won't get synced with my iPhone anymore. I use the good old USB cable to sync and recharge my iPhone.

After browsing through a couple of forums I get the impression that syncing can only be done via iCloud services from now on.. Is that right? I sincerely hope not. I have deep concerns to send my private data to some space in the digital nirvana where I have no control over it.

Any help on how I can get my calendar and notes to sync again via iTune and USB or WLAN is highly appreciated.

Best regards,

Frank N.

Yes, unacceptable ! And yes, sync via an mail server puts your confidential info out into the cloud just as surely as using iCloud. So not an acceptable alternative.

Please ALL post your concerns (as I have) on http://www.apple.com/feedback/ Apple folks claim they really do look at what gets posted there and if we all holler good and loud there's a good chance this will get fixed in the next ML release.

I had a similar problem. I tried to sync the Calendar from my new Ipod Touch 5g to my IMac with Mountain Lion with a USB connection using ITunes, but it wouldn't work. I was able to sync all of my Contact from my Ipod Touch onto my Computer, but couldn't do so with my Calendar. I did not want to use ICloud and do not have WiFi at home. I only have ethernet connection.

I had to go thru "three" different Apple Support Tech to assist me. They first had me "back up" my IPod Touch info onto my IMac (which can be done via ITunes) to insure that none of my info will be lost while trying resolve this problem..Then I had to download any updates for Mountain Lion on my IMac and IPod Touch (ITune 11) so everything could sync but still nothing worked. It took many hours to do this. Finally, I was told I will need to use ICloud and also have to bring both my IPod Touch and my IMac to an Apple Store to get both devices checked out. Wasn't a very happy camper lugging my devices to an Apple Store at a Shopping Mall during the Holiday Season, but it needed to be done.

The Apple Help Tech worked on it and, too, couldn't sync it via USB. He told me that I needed to use ICloud and an account was established. However, when he tried to sync my Calendar from my IPod Touch using ICloud, ALL of my Calendar info got "deleted" from my IPod. Good thing that I had my IPod info already backed up on my IMac. When the Apple Tech restored my IPod info via ITunes from my IMac, something wonder happened. Now the Calendar on both my IMac and IPod began to sync with no problems. This particular procedure "trigger" something on my IMac with Mountain Lion. Now I am able to "sync" my Calendar on both my IPod Touch and IMac using an USB cable with no problems.

Interesting experience - but I wonder how stable this will be given that the Apple techs tripped over it rather than it being a known fix. I also wonder if the next rev of Mountain Lion will "reset" the fix.

Bottom line, it is totally unacceptable that Apple is trying to forcibly migrate users to iCloud with no alternative. There is a growing climate of opinion - even from Steve Wozniak ! - that Cloud storage is not ideal in many respects, not only because of security concerns.

I was able to fix the problem myself which took me 2 days after upgrading to Mountain Lion again. My iCal Calendar was filled with duplicate entries, up to 3500 of them in one single day, and dozens of days like that! That confirmed my opinion that iCal is the worst piece of software Apple made.

Anyway, first thing I tried to get Calendar and to sync via USB was to do it with a completely new (almost empty) Calendar database. That worked. Next I replaced it with a purged and cleaned-up version of my old Calendar database (removing the duplicates took most of the time 😠) . And finally that worked, too.

All this is 2 months ago and syncing still works fine.

The hard fact is that Reminders and Notes sync via iCloud only, which is outrageous, with no option to choose from. If Apple goes on like this and forces Calendar sync via iCloud in the future, the next thing for me will be to ditch my iPhone.

I ditched Reminders and Notes. I now use a workaround and use my document archiving software to replace it (DevonThink Pro Office).

Sad things are going on at Apple Computers, putting off many members of its old commulity.
