Constant Kernel Panics on OS X Mountain Lion.

Hello,

I've been experiencing constant kernel panics since installing Mountain Lion.

The panics sometimes happen every couple hours to happening as soon a I boot up, thus leading me to restart and trapping me in a constant rebooting because of kernel panics.

Can anybody spot what is going wrong, based on the diagnostic that is provided to me?

I've had a kernel panic 3 times on my 2010 Macbook Pro since I installed Mountain Lion. It was a clean install and this only happens when I am off the charger. When ever my Macbook is charging (pretty much all the time) I have never had a kernel panic.

I have upgraded my harddrive and the memory when I upgraded to Lion, but like I said this has only happened with Mountain Lion.

No, I don't use anything Bluetooth. I ran the Apple Hardware rest and no issues were found. When I tried to run the sake test, but checked the extendeded it gets stuck 5 minutes in. I ran the extended checked twice and both times it gets stuck.

I'm going to put the original ram (4GB total) back in and see if I don't get a kernel panic. The upgraded ram I had in is the Kingston KTA-MB1066K2/8G 8GB memory kit.

Well after putting back the memory that shipped with my Macbook Pro a few hours later got another Kernel Panic error. It happened as soon as I hit the 'Full Screen' icon in Safari.

I went to disk utility and repaired my disk as it says in the Apple Support Document. I'm covered under AppleCare so I'm thinking of setting up a genius appointment.

Any suggestions on what I can check before I do so?

Hello there guys. Kernel panics haven't stop on my MBP mid 2010. I even sent a report with a comment:

"Kernel panic when searching for constant kernel panics at the macforums"

Thanks to the post of ak403, I went to the NVIDIA link and check for the driver. The thing is that I didn't remember the number of my graphic card so I went to the apple logo at the menu bar/about this mac and this is what I got:

My NVIDIA 330M it's not listed!!! So I clicked on system report and went to Graphics/Displays and the card is there, but I'm sure that Mountain Lion is not using it.

User uploaded file

I downloaded and installed the driver from the NVIDIA link that @ak403 post back there. Nothing, Nada, Niente... The only graphics my laptop is using right now are the integrated graphics, no wonder why I got so much Kernel Panics, I think that every time the graphic card was ask to help, I was getting one.

So I installed the gfxCardStatus 2.2.1 and choose to work with integrated graphics only until I or someone at apple figure this out.

Would you guys be so kind to check if your Graphic card is showing up at the "about this mac" menu please??

Aug 16, 2012 2:45 PM in response to Jmkoury

Kernel panics continued even when integrated or discrete only graphics where selected on gfxCardStatus.

About 10 KP in an hour period.

I think that the problem relies on dynamic switching.

I reset the PRAM and VRAM and been working for about 3 hours now without KP. I ran Quicktime, all the adobe suite, windows on parallel desktop, itunes, office, iwork, facetime, chrome (youtube) and safari (youtube) and nothing!!!

I think that command+opt+P+R solved the problem for me!!

Hope this works for you guys!

Aug 17, 2012 1:10 PM in response to Jmkoury

Ok, just to follow up. I took my MacBook Pro to the Apple Store. They looked at it and said that it failed the video test and the logic board needs to be replaced. The Genius person did say that they had to run a test specific for my machine (mid 2010 MacBook Pro i5). I have AppleCare so I don't have to for anything I just find it a little odd that this problem surfaced after a clean install of Mountain Lion. Included labor this repair would have cost me $310 if I didnt have AppleCare.

Good idea. Here is one of the ones I got.

MiamiBourne-

Don't skip your service appointment.

You may have a graphics card failure.

panic(cpu 2 caller 0xffffff7f96ba4c85): NVRM[0/1:0:0]: Read Error 0x00000100

The only non-Apple extension is Logmein, which should have nothing to do with it:

com.logmein.driver.LogMeInSoundDriver 1.0.0

EDIT: fixed spaeelling don't ship s.b. don't skip

Thanks allot Grant i tried to make sense of the log but missed that line.

Actually i only use Firefox so i'm sure it must have been the Flashplayer, it happens that it crashes on me but this was my first KP so now i know it can even do this. I'm glad atleast my iPhone dont have this crappy software running on it 🙂

Thanks again for taking the time and looking at my log.

Cheers

Hi Jmkoury,

The Nvidia drivers didn't help me either:(. When I posted that last post I had just installed it and was waiting to see what happened. I've been using the gfxCardstatus ever since I've installed Lion last year and nothing has helped so far. I looked at the "About This Mac" and only integrated graphics appears, but then when I choose the NVIDIA card in gfxCardStatus and go back to the About this Mac window only the NVIDIA card shows.

I'm still gonna be looking for a non logic board replacing solution because I didn't get an extended warranties for this one. All the best!

Does anyone know whether the graphics card is replaceable in the MBP? Could I simply go out and buy a newer Radeon card and pop it in or is it attached to the motherboard or other deeper component? Thank you!
