Constant Kernel Panics on OS X Mountain Lion.

Hello,

I've been experiencing constant kernel panics since installing Mountain Lion.

The panics sometimes happen every couple hours to happening as soon a I boot up, thus leading me to restart and trapping me in a constant rebooting because of kernel panics.

Can anybody spot what is going wrong, based on the diagnostic that is provided to me?

Ok, just to follow up. I took my MacBook Pro to the Apple Store. They looked at it and said that it failed the video test and the logic board needs to be replaced......I just find it a little odd that this problem surfaced after a clean install of Mountain Lion.

You're not wrong to find it odd. It's nonsense. I have a mid-2010 Macbook that worked flawlessly on Snow Leopard, but with Mountain Lion it's kernel panics galore. They seem to happen whenever I'm using Finder, but there is no real pattern.

I too have had the same problems with constant crashes ever since updating to Mountain Lion.

I would suggest that everyone who has trouble to call support, as you get some priority assistance due to purchasing the software. Each person I have spoken to has said that they have not heard any reports of this happening to Mountain Lion, in which I have told them to just have a quick look at the community posts 😉

Over the past week with phone support, I have run the Apple Hardware Test for 7 hours (twice) with no errors found, reinstalled Mountain Lion 4 times and formatted the hard drive using the 7 pass secure erase. All of which did not fix the problem.

I am now dealing with a supervisor who has copies of the error logs and information that I supplied from a Data Capture in which we are waiting for a tech to view and report back.

In the meantime I have fallen back to Lion and in between the clean install and the first update, the system crashed 4 times. After the first update, it has worked flawlessly.

I will let you know what happens once I hear the results from the data capture. I beleive it is caused by the logic board and will be pushing for it to be replaced under the extended warenty as stated here - http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4088

Just an update. I got my Macbook Pro back today. Pretty fast considering I turned it into the Apple Store on Friday. Anyways under the symptoms it says 'Intermettent Black Screen or Loss of video'. After doing some reseach I did see a problem where Lion users would complain about the screen going blank. In an Apple Support document they had a description of this happening to 2010 Macbook Pro's: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4088?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US

Anyways I did remember shortly after upgrading to Lion that there would be times where my Macbook would not wake from the sleep and the sleep light would stay illumintated. I thought this issue was because of my 3rd party ram or doing an upgrade to a carbon copy of my drive (read that somewhere).

So maybe I was having issues before Mountain Lion that turned into Kernel Panics. Just a thought.

Add me to the list of ML Kernel Panic victims. My early 2008 15" MBPro had maybe 1 or 2 such events in 4 years prior to upgrading to ML from SL. I've now had 3 since upgrading, one event of the computer screen going black and the computer going to sleep (but OK after I woke it up by hitting the power button) and several Safari crashes.

It's all related to working with Safari 6, as that is when the panics occurred. I was a Camino user forever, but have had to use an alternative browser for password-protected stuff since ML and 1Password killed that option. Firefox and Chrome are simply awful on the Mac, so I'm stuck with Safari for productivity.

Obviously an Apple ML issue. I'm actually debating restoring SL from my complete pre-ML backup.

Since last post when I thought everything was solved, I found out that I was wrong, very wrong...

Kernel Panics increase, more constant and more times. running chrome, appstore, gfxcardstatus set to integrated, gfxcardstatus set to discrete only, gfxcardstatus set to both, there is no solution to this.

I ran the apple hardware test and nothing came up, ran the extendend apple hardware test, nothing.

So far I have tried:

Fresh install of Mountain Lion: Same thing.

NVidia Cuda Drivers: Nada.

GfxCardStatus (all options): Nothing.

Uninstall flash plug-in: didn't help.

Reseting PRAM/VRAM: useless.

Energy saving/disable automatic graphic switch: Niente.

________________________________________________

So far nothing have helped, kernel panics can appear just by turning my laptop on, and I can get 3, 4 or 5 in about ten minutes, until the system some how stabilizes itself and then I use my time to come here and read something about Kernel Panics and BOOM, the panics starts again.

I've never post the log, so here it goes, if anyone know how to read it and what to look for, please let me know! I took it from library/logs/DiagnosticReports. When I reported, panic since last report were up to 25!!!

Hello Grant, thanks for the quick response.

I thought of that when i read your other post but I have one question here:

How is it possible that my computer was perfect just before I installed mountain lion, and now with ML I have a bad graphic card??

I did a string macth over my KPs and it seems like a constant:

panic(cpu 0 caller 0xffffff7f88561c85): NVRM[0/1:0:0]: Read Error 0x00000100: CFG 0xffffffff 0xffffffff 0xffffffff, BAR0 0xd2000000 0xffffff811bb60000 0x0a5480a2, D0, P3/4

Just five of them...

I don't want to go back to Snow Leopard to confirme it, but maybe I will do a TMBackup, then use the TM to go back to SL, try it for a while, and see if get at least 1 kernel panic, if I don't what should I do??

How is it possible that a lot of people are getting this KPs on mid 2010 macbook pros just when they update to mountain lion??

It's not possible because this is not a hardware problem. If you try and get this serviced you will just get hardware replaced, not get a resolution and then go around in circles.

I would recommend going back to Snow Leopard until there are several point releases of Mountain Lion before trying again, assuming Apple believes this is something to be fixed.

Aug 23, 2012 4:37 AM in response to cilurnum

Agreed. This OS release has been a fiasco. I'm not going to erase my SL backup until at least the 10.8.1 update. If things don't improve, I'll be restoring SL. There are just too many things that need to be fixed with Mountain Lion, although my 4 year old MBPro is doing better than many others out there, including those less than a year old.

Just found out this----> http://www.tonymacx86.com/172-updated-nvidia-cuda-5-0-mac-released.html

I don't have my mb here with me and will not get to it till tonight.

If someone could try this cuda driver (was released on aug 21 and adds SUPPORT FOR MOUNTAIN LION) and see if it works, would be great!

Direct link to nvidia page:

http://www.nvidia.com/object/cuda-mac-driver.html

Let me know guys!!! I'll try it just when I get home!

Edit: --->> From TonyMacx86 tweet--->> " This update should help out anyone that does video encoding on OS X 10.8 as it helps move some of the processing workload from the CPU over to the GPU."

Aug 29, 2012 10:30 PM in response to Jmkoury

New info:

Through all this days, I was able to replicate the KPs by trying to play a .mkv video file on VLC from a usb thumbdrive. There was absolutely no way of doing this without crashing the system. I was only able to watch the video by copying the file to my hdd and playing it from there.

I just installed the cuda driver from my last post, restart my mbp and tried to play a .mkv video from the usb and it works!!

So I just started to open a bunch of videos on quicktime, setting them to the new full screen mode (separate desktop) and opened another and another until I was running 6 HD videos on quicktime, one full hd 4K video on VLC, Windows on Parallels Desktop, full scren youtube video with chrome, full screen dailymotion video with safari, PhotoShop, facetime and photobooth at the effects screen. (7GB of my 8GB of RAM)

If you have dynamic graphic card switching turned on, every time you try to open a .mkv file on VLC, you will activate your GPU (in my case nVidia 330M). When I was using the gfxcardstatus app, forcing my system to work with integrated graphics, I had fewer crashes, this time, with dynamic graphic card switching turned on, and stressing the system all I could, I had none!

I was so happy that I cmd+Q all the apps, reopen chrome to share my experience with you, and type discussions.apple.com, hit enter and puff... KP... same old cause.

I have no doubt that with the cuda driver my system seems to be a little more stable, but I already set an appointment at an authorized dealer to deliver my mb so they check the logic board, gpu, ram or whatever they want to check. If my mb is eligible for the extended program, I will have to wait 3 weeks so apple send the logic board to them. (we have zero apple stores here at Venezuela)

If you guys try this cuda driver, please let me know if it works for you.

But then I'm not the only one who has problems with the Kernel Panic!
Happens to me only and only when I run the virtual machine to Parallels Desktop 7. Before, when I had not upgraded to ML everything I never happened. It is not that there is any inconsistency between ML and PD7? Why are weeks that I send reports to Parallels and every time I meet with different tests each time to execute. We are proceeding by trial and error. Apple is not possible that you can get in conttatto with Parallels support?
I am attaching the report last Kernel Panic
