Like it or not, Apple's going to have to replace your logic board.

Mid-2010 15" MacBook Pros - the bad NVIDIA GPU

If you're having frequent kernel panics with your 15" mid-2010, or intermittent screen problems, the problem is, more than likely, the faulty NVIDIA GPU found in a number of those machines.

Here's the "official" Apple take on the issue - but the very real kernel panics need not be preceded by 'Intermittent black screen or loss of video'... in fact, you might not experience any video problems at all. Although video problems can certainly be a portent of things to come…

So what can you do? Print out a copy of your kernel panic and a copy of the Knowledge Base article and take them, along with your machine, to your local Apple Store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider. They should be more than willing to install a new logic board at no cost. I have no idea why this faulty GPU is making the headline here on the MacBook Pro forum so often now - could it be because Mountain Lion is just bring the issue to a head more readily? I don't know - I only know that we're seeing more and more of these kernel panics of late.

These sorts of problems do not happen in an unmodified Mac OS X kernel. But you do not have an unmodified Mac OS X kernel, you have added many more third-party extensions than were present on your last panic. Your goal should be to reproduce the panic with NO third-party kernel extensions present, so that the remaining problem is an Apple problem -- then they will help you.

There is very little actual malware in the Mac environment. Most of the so-called Virus protection does more harm than good, as you are finding out the hard way.

You still could have a memory problem, but with all this other stuff loaded, it is impossible to tell.

Does that apply to the 13-inch, Mid 2010 MacBook Pro as well? I seem to be having similar issues.

Every kernel panic is unique. If we could generalize, this thread would not exist. It would have been answered in the first response, and everyone else could run with that advice. Alas, that is NOT the case.

I don't know, but if it's reoccurring, it could be a problem with the GPU on your logic board, maybe a RAM problem, etc.

Your best course of action would be to take a print-out of the kernel panic, along with your machine, to your local Apple Store or an AASP and have them diagnose your hardware, as it doesn't 'read' as a software kernel panic.

It could, of course, be an one-off fault. But if it's reoccurring, get to any Apple center as soon as you can.

Update on my laptop: I took it in the Apple store with several print-outs of the kernel panics and the knowledgebase article about the logic board. The guy who worked there was super helpful and said that could be the issue, and there is a separate test they can run for it that was not done the first time I went. (He said that my symptoms were not the typical ones for the logic board issue so he's not surprised the person who looked at it the first time did not think to check it.) When the test was done a huge FAILED showed on the screen.

I was a couple months before time ran out on the repair, so they replaced the logic board for free. I've had the laptop back for several days now and not only have I not gotten a single kernel panic, it's running more fast and stable in general.

This is such a relief. Thank you so much for the heads up! I still get edgy when browsing the internet and such since that used to almost always cause a kernel panic, but it just works great now. :-)
