Constant Kernel Panics on OS X Mountain Lion.

Hello,

I've been experiencing constant kernel panics since installing Mountain Lion.

The panics sometimes happen every couple hours to happening as soon a I boot up, thus leading me to restart and trapping me in a constant rebooting because of kernel panics.

Can anybody spot what is going wrong, based on the diagnostic that is provided to me?

I am having this same exact issue on my mid 2010 15 inch MBP. I thought I'd post my error report so we could try to find some common ground. I notice you have Parallels appearing in yours as does mine. I installed the updated version but the kernel panics still continue. My next step will likely be to uninstall parallels.

Let me know if you make any progress...

After unistalling paralles and most other 3rd party apps, I'm still experiencing the kernel panics. I can't even log onto my mbp now.

I was able to run a memcheck and my ram checks out fine. I don't think my samsung 830 that is less than 2 months old is fail.... but i could check that.

It looks like my next step is a clean install of Mountain Lion again in hopes that it will solve it.

Guess this didn't really help much but it's all i could find.

Did you have any luck?

Aug 1, 2012 10:17 AM in response to domtran

Same here, MBPro 2010 15" 2.4Ghz Intel Core i5 - 8GB 1067 Mhz DDR3 from Crucial and Curcial SSD. Constant kernel panics, just trying to write this was a pain.

Clean install didn't help at all!! For me at least.

I have already sent like 15 reports to apple.

Yesterday I post for the first time here, just because I read someone saying at another thread something like: My mountain lion is running perfectly, you must be an isolated case, if not, the forum would be full with post like yours...

I guess the reason that there are few of us posting here is just because some others tried but a kernel panic stop them.

If you guys find a solution please post it!! I can't be at a conference with an inestable system like this, but I don't want to go back to snow leopard.

That old apple ad where a guy was giving a conference, the screen turns black and everyone is trying to help him "-press c.. -press c/.... and guy from the back of the auditorium stand up and say: "WHY DON'T YOU JUST GET A Mac??" came to my mind...

Aug 2, 2012 4:27 AM in response to domtran

So it seems that I have found a solution to my problem.

I had, within my macbook pro, upgraded to Corsair Vengeance 8GB 1600 MHZ RAM.

It has been running fine in Snow Leopard and Lion, but I guess it doesn't run for Mountain Lion.

I tried a clean install but it didn't even allow me to do that, as i would kernel panic mid install.

I thought it was my ssd but it wasn't.

I have replaced my ram now with the stock 4GB ram that came with my machine, and so far it seems to be working fine.

Hope this helps.

Oh I also ran memcheck with the Corsair RAM and it all checked out fine so i didn't think it was the ram at first until my cousin said maybe mountain lion itself is rejecting the ram even though my 2nd gen i7 2.2 ghz processor is compatible with it.

Do you have a 1600Mhz bus? Are you sure that's the right speed for your model?

Mac's are picky about RAM. Even though some of the experts around here say that it's fine to run 1600Mhz on a 1333Mhz bus, I stick to the Apple spec's usually. Do you have a 2012 model?

You have a 1333Mhz bus and the recommended RAM is 204-pin PC-10600 (1333 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM, same as mine (late 2011). I have Corsair 1333Mhz installed in mine and have had no problems with Lion or Mountain Lion. I don't know that your problem is the speed, of course (and many will likely jump in and say that it's definitely not a speed issue), but you've narrowed your problem down to the modules themselves, it seems.

I would contact Corsair and let them know of the problem - they have a lifetime limited warranty on their sticks - and see what they recommend. Replacing the RAM with the 'proper' speed or just replacing the RAM at the speed that you have.

Good luck,

Clinton

Today (Aug 2nd) had 3 (THREE!) KernelPanics in a 1-hour span... all of them while doing something in Safari. Early 2009 Mac Pro (Tower) here. All of my RAM and video cards were Apple-Installed from factory. Hve been using this computer for 3 years and these are the FIRST KP's I've gotten: all since upgrading to Mountain Lion.

The last one I got, I submitted a report to Apple. It seems browser/plugin based (to me). I don't want to throw Adobe under the bus, but I DID just update the Flash plugin... coincidence...? I dunno.

Aug 2, 2012 11:16 AM in response to Scott Finlayson

Scott, I am pretty sure it is Mountain Lion that is causing all of the problems. It is possible that 3rd party developer's drivers aren't compatible.

I know that some apps that haven't updated drivers are not complatible and cause kernel panics.

I also have heard that chrome causes kernel panics.

Before I took out my ram I did do a memcheck and everything checked out, but i was experiencing kernel panics more often when using chrome. Why? I have no clue.

The kernel panics then got to a point where I couldn't even log in, though i was able to use everything in safe mode. That was when I tried to clean install and found that it was a hardware problem because i couldn't even get passed the installation page.

The only thing I could really recommend is try turning off all your background 3rd party apps and startup apps that are 3rd party. If that doesn't solve the problem then, i think, you would have to try to read your kernel panic log and see if you have to uninstall any drivers. If that still doesn't work, try clean installing. The first time i installed Lion, it made it so that i would get a black screen whenever i tried logging in. I took it to the apple store and the genius bar told me to try a clean install. That basically sovled the problem so I think that you can get a bad copy of the OS. You could also try running a memcheck to see if maybe your RAM has gone bad and also check your harddrive to see if it might be dying on you but it seems unlikely.

If none of those things work I would just take it to the Genius bar and see what you can do.

Aug 2, 2012 11:22 AM in response to clintonfrombirmingham

Clinton,

I plan on returning my RAM today and replacing them with some 1333Mhz RAM.

I kind of don't want to go through the hassle of taking everything apart again only to find that any not stock RAM won't work but since the ones i was previously using were 1600Mhz, I should be fine going with the recommended Mhz.

Thanks for the headsup about not having a 1600Mhz bus. Hopefully it truly was just THOSE sticks of RAM and not 3rd party hardware in general. (I keep thinking that apple will eventually not allow us to use anything non apple)

I'll update as soon as I get those 1333Mhz Corsair sticks.

At one point I also thought it was my Samsung 830 SSD because it would kernel panic when i was trying to clean install but everything seems to be working fine now that I removed the RAM.

Aug 2, 2012 11:34 PM in response to domtran

I got my MBP to stop having kernel panics, and the good news is it was easy!

Apparently there's a glitch related to bluetooth which I found out here:

http://blog.avatron.com/post/28135386805/kernel-panics-mountain-lion-and-bluetoo th

Anyways I was able to solve this problem by allowing bluetooth devices to wake the computer. Hopefully this will apply to somebody else that sees this.

Aug 3, 2012 9:33 AM in response to domtran

Hey domtran. I feel for you because I have the same MBP from 2010 minus the SSD and ever since I installed Lion it was kernel panic after kernel panic. Mine were mostly only during graphics switched the the nvidia geforce 330m card when opening iphoto or quicktime but random times too. So I went to the forums. They had some solutions like going into your library directory and deleting some things, reinstalling OS, etc. but there was one thing that worked- gfxCardStatus app. It lets you lock your graphics card so it stays on the intel graphics. It needed some tuning at the start but when it's working I don't have kernel panics. Set it to "Integrated only". I have mountain lion now and it still panics unless I have that gfxcardstatus on. About 30 mins ago I downloaded drivers from nvidia's website and I'm hoping that it did something. Here's the link to that:

http://www.nvidia.com/object/cuda-mac-driver.html

The gfxcardstatus app just search in google. I hope any of this helped.

It was so annoying to have a handicapped computer that costed 2 grand. Apple released an OS which wouldn't run on their own computers which weren't even a year old. Then left us scrambling. So annoying. A clear sign that the consumer demand is so high that even with an angry mid-2010MBP population they're still raking in the dough without looking back. They had one year to fix it before mountain lion came out and they didn't even do that.

I have also upgraded to 8gig Ram but mine is within the specification = 204-pin PC-10600 (1333 MHz).

Maybe its only a onetimer crash but i never ever seen my mac crash within the 2 years so was sort of surprised. Hopefully it wont happen again (figers crossed).

I dont have parallell or for that matter much applications installed, i made a fresh ML installations with minimum applications like iMovie+iPhone+Forklift+Firefox so its a pretty clean system i must say.
