Panic. All my email has disappeared from iCloud. I did not delete it, and now it's working again, but only from today. What happened to my old emails?

Sorry for the long header, but this is my first question.

Today, for no apparent reason, my iCloud inbox/sent items/junk/trash everything has disappeared from all my devices. I checked iCloud, and there's nothing up there either. I did not delete all my email, either intentionally or by accident.

Meanwhile, iCloud is now working again, but all the old mails are gone, I'm hoping not forever.

How do I recover all this missing material, which is essential both to my business and personally?

thanks

iMac, Mac OS X (10.7.4)

This sounds as if you need the attentions of MobileMe Support (I know you're on iCloud but there is no free support for that unless you happen to have AppleCare, and MobileMe Support have helped some people). Go to http://www.apple.com/support/mobileme/ww/ and select your country. In the next window click on a category to expand it, then on a subject to get a link to 'live chat'.

I have had exactly the same problem. Noticed on friday.

My .mac account goes back to 2005. My sent mail disappeared apparently on July 27th - 23,000 messages gone.

My other mailboxes contents are disappearing one by one today. I click on an icloud folder and I see the messages there, a moment later they all vanish leaving only one or two.

I have a call schedule with Apple in the AM but very pessimistic.

Looks like 7 years of loyalty to this service will leave me with no mail history if the rest of my archives disappear...

So after a lot of back and forth with Apple support, we determined that my emails/notes could not be recovered from their end. That's 2 years worth of emails and notes...gone.

However, I was able to use Time Machine to restore emails/notes up until the last backup, which unfortunately was at the end of June. So I lost all of July and the first week of August. What's funny is that I only recently moved my Notes to iCloud so they would sync. If I had left them alone on my ipad and iphone, I would still have them.

I will say that most of the people I talked to at Apple support were very helpful and friendly. One guy was very hard to understand on the phone, so I just called back and got someone who I could understand. I wish they could have helped me more and that they had some explanation for why this happened, but I did learn a valuable lesson about backing up to an external hard drive on a more regular basis.

Yup, I've had the same from Apple - they are saying that my email can't be recovered. I've pointed them in the direction of this discussion thread though as presumably the same thing has happened to all of us, so how come some people's can be retrieved and some can't?

Has anyone been told by anyone at Apple exactly what happened? The people who's email has reappeared maybe? Your info might be able to assist the rest of us and our Apple techs...

Suzannar,

Apart from the support guy in the UK the morning after the night the mail returned, calling to help me reset my

password. But he did not seem to know why or what the problem was or what had caused it. He gave the impression the iCloud servers are not in one location and that Apple is building another storage facility in case of any natural disasters!!! I thought this was an disaster to be honest and have no faith in any of this cloud based technology - it's too flakey and un reliable. Why would I back up to it - I will stick to regular time machine backups. But it is hard to manage multiple macs on a regular basis. I would lobby for a updated bit of code that allows you the option of cloning your mail boxes on the local device in the background if possible untill the can guarantee that cloud technology is proven.

You have to ask them - do they not backup their servers ?
