iPod Classic reads "connected", but it is not showing up on the Mac's desktop or in iTunes.

I accidentally disconnected my iPod Classic before it ejected from my Mac (OS 10.6.8 and iTunes 10.6.3). The iPod plays fine, but when I connect it to the Mac, although the iPod screen reads "connected, eject before disconnecting", it does not show up either on the desktop (I keep it in disk mode) or in iTunes. I reset it three times. I also tried a different USB port. Neither resolved the problem. I cannot restore it to factory setting since it does not show up in iTunes. I have no idea what to do to try to fix the problem.

Well at this point there really isn't much else for options. You can either to choose to continue using the iPod and not ever be able to update its contents or taking your chances and reformatting it using Disk Uitlity.

I got the same response when i tried to fix it using Utility. how do i reformat using Disk Utility?

I've had this happen to me a few times. Disk utility can not repair this issue since its not really that extensive of a repair utility. I've had some success using alsoft's disk warrior which can rebuild the node structure but ultimately your going to have to erase and reformat. If you can get into the ipod drive you can copy the music folder out of it but you have to set the finder to show hidden folders to do that. Honestly I just use disk utility for reformatting and repairing permissions. Anything beyond that go to another HD utility.
