Mountain Lion has random freezes. The mouse still works but the graphics go glitchy and i can't click on anything. I have to hold the power to restart.

Since installing mountain lion about a week ago on my late 2008 unibody 15" macbook pro, i'm experiencing random lockups where the graphics go glitchy and i can only move the mouse, but clicking does not work.

Is anyone else experiencing this?

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.5.6)

Just to chime in and maybe eliminate some potential causes,

Got the freezing issue just two days ago. Seems quite random. I got crashes with:

-Final cut pro X, both during video playback and editing tasks.

-Safari. Sometimes websites slowly get corrupted (icons appear scrambled) until whole computer freezes) Also most often it happens when playing back movies in youtube or flash-based players. Had no problem with VLC playback (watched a whole movie yesterday).

I've got an iMac late 2009, no external monitors connected. Also uninstalled Msoft Silverlight (first thought that was the problem) and for a while also latest version of Adobe Flash, but the freezes keep appearing. Also did a reset of NVRAM, with no apparent effect.

Freezes are similar to descriptions above. Often screen tear-up or just visual freezing while mouse-pointer keeps moving and sound keeps playing. Reboots sometimes end in corrupted screens.

Yesterday I updated to 10.8.1, seemed to work then, but today I've had 3 crashes/freezes already. So 10.8.1 doesn't seem to solve it.

Hopefully this info is helpful for comparisons to similar cases! And HOPEFULLY apple can fix this issue asap!

Although both LittleSnitch and RadioEye are both supposed to be Mountain Lion compatible, I don't know if I would run both of them. They both mess with the same parts of the system. Also, if you are experiencing problems, the first thing to do is uninstall any third party software that has either kernel extensions or launch daemons. Even if they are really cool and useful, they could be the source of the problem. You must remove them even to exonerate them.

You also missed the top processes part of EtreCheck. That is important.

Finally, you should repost this information in your own thread with your own specifics. That will always result in higher quality feedback. There is no guarantee that your problem is identical to someone else's.

I apologize for not paying attention to that myself in this thread. That does a disservice to both the original poster and the well-meaning, but guilty, thread-jacker.

Same problem here. However, if I let the computer sleep, it will wake up with a mouse that can scroll but won't allow me to click on anything. In addition, the ForceQuit will not allow me close out applications to try and pinpoint the error. Just like everyone else, I have to hold down the power button on my 2010 MacBook to get any sort of response.

This *****!

Aug 24, 2012 2:05 PM in response to etresoft

I am not convinced that any third-party software is interacting with Mountain Lion to cause this problem. I had no choice but to perform a complete fresh install of Mountain Lion, and still the problem persisted, before I even had a chance to re-install any software.

By the way, here are my results from EtreCheck:

I updated to 10.8.1 two days ago but the freezes started today (in a white Macbook late 2009). It happened 4 or 5 times today, usually happens when I'm closing tabs in Safari, but also seems to be quite random. I also had a some freezes while restarting the system (at boot time) and it didn't finished the boot. For the first issue I had to hold the power button. For the second one I had to start the Macbook once in recovery mode and then I could boot it again.

I really thought that 10.8.1 had fixed my problem. I removed the program "gfxCardStatus" which I had used to set my machine to integrated only. With it set to integrated only it never crashed once. However with 10.8.1 I disabled this and for a few days everything looked fine.

Today so far I've had 2 lockups in a row and have once again disabled the nvidia card on my machine in hopes that 10.8.2 will fix this embarassing problem once and for all.

Aug 29, 2012 12:22 PM in response to AnkoP

Getting very similar freezes here too - got them since upgrading to 10.8.1 a few days ago. With 10.8 I was getting WIndowServer taking >50% but this is worse...

i too am experiencing this issue. it happens randomly. I have ML 10.8.1 at the moment and this issue has occured not only after upgrading to ML but also when i did an upgrade to Lion late last year. It occured a few times then but eventually stopped but is now reappearing after upgrading the OS again. very odd how the issue appears to occur after an OS upgrade...

Anyways I have the early 2011 mbp 13" with the Intel 3000 graphics.

Even if you think your issue is identical to someone else's, it is always best to start your own question. You can always include a link back to a thread that describes a problem you think is similar. In a busy forum like this one, a piggy-backing post like this one is liable to be lost. I only noticed it because other people also piggy-backed and caused it to show up on my recent list.

The last I heard, AirParrot was known to cause problems. If you are experiencing problems, and EtreCheck reports anything under kernel extensions, the first step is to always uninstall that software. Even if you are sure it is completely harmless, it must be removed - even if only to eliminate it as a suspect. If the crashes continue, that kernel extension may be fine. Your problem could be hardware which would need a trip to the store while still under warranty.

I don't know of any reported problems with this software, but all of them are likely candidates simply because they are open source and/or relatively uncommon enough for rme to have never heard of them.

You don't need any "clean up" or antivirus on a Mac. If you don't believe me and still want antivirus, at least only install one at a time. Either ClamXav or Sophos, not both. Plus, Sophos seems to be only partially installed. Always use the official uninstaller that comes with the software. Don't use any "clean up" software.

Mountain Lion has random freezes. The mouse still works but the graphics go glitchy and i can't click on anything. I have to hold the power to restart.
